That's a better demonstration of using effects than most videos which just seem to be making silly noises, unusable in actual songs. I am trying out the Radial Voco-Loco as a mic pre and guitar level FX loop.

Thanks. Would love to know how that Radial unit works. It wasn't an option when we made this video.

@@SeanPierceJohnson I am picking it up tomorrow if I get lucky with the shipping. I have had good experiences with the Radial products (DI boxes) so.... my expectations are that it will be good. In a nutshell, it is a mic pre with bass and treble, and an fx loop that accepts guitar pedal level signals. In and out levels for the loop and a blend knob for the loop/dry. And it's $100 less then the Eventide Mixing Link, a similar product. What I liked about your demo is that it was not a bunch of stupid effects that can never be useful unless you are doing some freak out jam song and want to pretend you are Radiohead. Most often, we use compression, megaphone/distortion and delays (slapback and vocal throw effects). Getting delay to oscillate is fun, for the first 3 times you experience it, after that... meh.

Thanks. Yeah in the band I'm the one using the denser, more extreme effects. But when it comes to the vocals we want to keep it VERY specific and not get in the way of the vocal. Once the vocal gets lost, it's all over.

I have a Keymaster and recorded some vocals with it but I'm getting a really bad hiss from it. I don't get the same hiss when going directly to preamp and make sure the level is the same

Guitar effects on a vocal is a neat idea!

I've seen them used on a keyboard as well, and bass effects on guitar and vice versa (Geezer Butler with his wah intro much?).

dang I thought the small stone was subtle on my guitar, but it's even more subtle on your voice! Are you running the phaser into the delay, or the delay into the phaser? (Yes I know this is from a while back, and rigs change, lol.)
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 6 жыл бұрын
+RJW14 Phaser is running into Delay. Though our bassist modded the Small Stone to boost the output volume.

Cool :) I have it the other way around, so that each repeat gets a different part of the sweep. I run that with the small stone dialed in about a third of the way on the undeep setting.

could you not go directly from the preamp unbalanced out to the pedals? skipping the keymaster and then going back into a di box?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 4 жыл бұрын
the preamp outputs at Line Level which doesn't work optimally with the pedals, which are Instrument Level. The Keymaster handles impedance matching for proper leveling of the signal so you don't encounter signal-to-noise issues.

Cool video thanks for making it! Can I use my Apollo twin for this technique to work or do I need the keymaster ?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 3 жыл бұрын
Well you'd have to convert line level to instrument level. There are newer, smaller convertor boxes out there.

Hi Cynda instead of the keymaster ..can I use a boost pedal , 6 band eq pedal and a dyna compressor pedal to increase my microphone signal in order to use my delay pedals for vocals?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, Sean here. That's a long way to go for what you want and still won't really do what you want. There are other options out there these days for getting mic level into guitar pedals. A guitar boost pedal still isn't going to give you the kind of signal you need to adequately amplify the mic for live use. You need the mic pre at least. But the thing is you need to convert the impedance of a balanced signal to an unbalanced signal. Everything on this board is meant to lower the signal-to-noise ratio as much as possible. A little hum on guitar is okay, but not on the human voice.

@@SeanPierceJohnson thanks that makes sense...so I tryd using my boss delay for practice/ rehearsal one day and that's when I found out that the singal gos weak ..so I started looking into it..what's the cheapest way to go at it if I may ask...my budget is about 180$ ... its just for practice/jamming purpose so I dont see my self getting a vocal pedal or keymaster of some sort...could I just use a simple preamp pedal ( if there is one) to do the trick..what do you recommend.. .thank you

She mentioned that she needed a preamp to feed a hot enough mic signal, but it was my understanding that this isn't necessary with the Keymaster? I was considering buying it so that I can use my guitar pedals with my vocals for live performance but wanted to confirm this is all that I will need, thank you.
@Alicesweetalice
@Alicesweetalice 8 жыл бұрын
+TheJadedTraveler Did you ever get an answer? I think the Preamp might be overkill, as the Pigtronix has INPUT and OUTPUT gain?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 8 жыл бұрын
+TheJadedTraveler A mics output is still not hot enough to drive the effects unfortunately. We originally did not have the preamp and just used the Keymaster's Input and Output gain. It created too much unnecessary noise and didn't drive the effects in a pleasant manner. The preamp upped the signal enough to interact well with the guitar effects. The unit does impedance matching, but it still doesn't make up for gain staging.
