Here's an example of a live performance being MUCH better than the recorded version. The percussion and drums are so much bigger, and her vocals are spine chilling. I think this is Cyndi's best live performance ever!

Here is a woman that stood up to the suits (not just men but women too), took control of her career, sacrificed sales and popularity to stay true to her work and vision ... and is rarely recognized for her work or for the fact that she is still going strong despite any support from Radio or a strong commercial outlet .. SHE deserves all the life time achievement awards that the Music Industry has to offer - She is Rock n' Roll Royalty and She is Pop Culture ... She is, Cyndi Lauper.

The way she gives it up for Boy Blue in this increasingly intense and then unstoppable avalanche of anger and loss is simply astonishing. It is so much more than a mere "performance". It is real. And yes, of course. It does help to understand why....

This song was written for Gregory Natal, one of her best friends, who died on January 1, 1986 at age 29. He had a tragic life, being kicked out of the house by his mother (I believe at age 12) after being raped by his father. He had low self-confidence and didn't really seem to care about his life, but he was still happy and had a great sense of humor. I think he and Cyndi bonded over this and the fact that they both had rough early lives.

Look, revisionist one: I lived through the period. The song was considered a rallying point about the disease. Quit fucking trying to downplay. it. Lauper already had a big gay following. It is REALLY disturbing when people like yourself try to ever so slightly push the dialog away from the issue, can it.

I know some others: Tina Turner ("The Acid Queen"), Stevie Nicks (look up 1976's live Rosebud performance of "Rhiannon"), Siouxsie Sioux (the Nocturne concert in 1983), Pat Benatar (her discography in general and her live performances). Cyndi is definitely one of the best, and still is. I give much respect to her.

Tina Turner, Pat Benatar and Stevie Nicks definitely have some great songs that I love, I have not heard of Sioux, will give her a try .. Cyndi Lauper will always have a special place in my heart, her tone just resonates in my soul especially her works in the 80s, there are a couple of great songs she did during the 2000s but her most of her best stuffs will always be her 80s stuffs ...

This performance (and song) will always be a huge favorite of mine. Very few live performances give me the goosebumps, but this one gets me EVERY time. Really now.. how many singers of today can practically scream while singing and still sound amazing? I wish so much that Cyndi got the recognition in the 80s that she should have. Unfortunately, I think the US just wasn't ready for her quirkiness (which is what I adore most about her). I freakin' adore the woman.. always have, always will!
