Here's an example of a live performance being MUCH better than the recorded version. The percussion and drums are so much bigger, and her vocals are spine chilling. I think this is Cyndi's best live performance ever!

Here is a woman that stood up to the suits (not just men but women too), took control of her career, sacrificed sales and popularity to stay true to her work and vision ... and is rarely recognized for her work or for the fact that she is still going strong despite any support from Radio or a strong commercial outlet .. SHE deserves all the life time achievement awards that the Music Industry has to offer - She is Rock n' Roll Royalty and She is Pop Culture ... She is, Cyndi Lauper.

The way she gives it up for Boy Blue in this increasingly intense and then unstoppable avalanche of anger and loss is simply astonishing. It is so much more than a mere "performance". It is real. And yes, of course. It does help to understand why....

This song was written for Gregory Natal, one of her best friends, who died on January 1, 1986 at age 29. He had a tragic life, being kicked out of the house by his mother (I believe at age 12) after being raped by his father. He had low self-confidence and didn't really seem to care about his life, but he was still happy and had a great sense of humor. I think he and Cyndi bonded over this and the fact that they both had rough early lives.

Look, revisionist one: I lived through the period. The song was considered a rallying point about the disease. Quit fucking trying to downplay. it. Lauper already had a big gay following. It is REALLY disturbing when people like yourself try to ever so slightly push the dialog away from the issue, can it.

This performance (and song) will always be a huge favorite of mine. Very few live performances give me the goosebumps, but this one gets me EVERY time. Really now.. how many singers of today can practically scream while singing and still sound amazing? I wish so much that Cyndi got the recognition in the 80s that she should have. Unfortunately, I think the US just wasn't ready for her quirkiness (which is what I adore most about her). I freakin' adore the woman.. always have, always will!

And another thing: she sings fully, without stop any part to get air! That's really amazing, considering over the decades and not a single modification, staying as always, a diamond voice! "I tried to write about my friend. I knew he really loved 'That's What Friends Are For.' I know that maybe he would have liked me to do a song like that. Instead I wrote about him personally. I don't know that my lyrics were good enough, I don't know that anything was good enough. Maybe it was too personal. I don't know. But I wrote it for him. It was because of him that I keep trying to do stuff. And other friends. So many talented people, so many of our friends and so many gifted people have passed on. Or struggle everyday. Just to live. And it was because of my friends and others that I do this. Maybe that song wasn't good enough, I don't know." Cyndi about your fried Carl who died of AIDS

Cyndi is without a doubt one of the absolute greats in music. She did not get the recognition she deserved, and those of us that were there still love her even more today. Her unique style and amazing depth along with her passion have NO equal today. We love you Cyndi!

You never knew yourself well enough But she never knew you at all And when she put you out on your own It may have stolen your innocence But not your soul Tell me where is little boy blue You'll find him standing always One step ahead Fast a little, shy a little, boy blue Wise blood runs warms and deep On the street ... Kids walking, just a kid walking You send a letter with photographs And I'll tuck them under my dreams And if we wake up old beyond our years Not quite as brave as we seem It's just the pain that never disappears Tell me where is boy blue You'll find him standing always one step ahead... Dance a little, cry a little... Where are you boy blue Where are you...

I have watched this video so many times. It's my fav. I think it shows her registar and accutually its very challenging to sing on your stomach or back, she is so gifted and wonderful, she captures me every time she sings, everytime. I love you cyindi
