“Autistic people are pure.” Being an autistic person, that’s so condescending. Why is it so hard to treat us like actual people?

I've been saying this for literally years- Sia's obsession with Maddie is pathological and unhealthy. Sleepovers in the same bed with an unrelated minor who depends on you for an income and for psychological validation are not okay. This is grooming. She wants Maddie to be totally dependent on her. I can't fathom how Melissa permits this to go on. They traded one monster for another.

I feel awful for Maddie, her crying about not wanting to offend people just demonstrates how uncomfortable she was with the role. Sia is so creepy.

so, let me get this straight. sia supposedly "fired" another actor that was autistic because she was supposedly uncomfortable in the environment. yet maddie had multiple panic attacks and sobbed on set because she knew it was wrong, and yet sia forced her to do it..?

Y'know, after hearing how Sia kept control of Maddie Ziegler from the age of 11, and you see her dancing around in skin colored tights in Chandelier, puts the whole music video in a *very* bad light, doesn't it?

Ableism aside for a second…is she *NOT* grooming that girl?! Everyone says narcissistic parent akin to Mother Gothel- kind of, but no. Mother Gothel left Rapunzel aallllll alone in her tower and only visited her to use her hair. That’s neglectful not indulgent. Rapunzel had to practically beg her to make her soup, and the only thing she’d bring her is paint. Not to mention this is a Disney movie, not real life. Sia has Maddie living across the street from her and they frequently have sleepovers *alone, in the same bed,* Sia is basically controlling her income since Maddie gets all/most of her roles from her, she’s trying to be a surrogate mother for Maddie’s arguably neglectful mother, the gifts, trips, obsessive interest/attention to her, just Google the signs of a groomer and it’s Sia. She didn’t even care when Maddie was noticeably and verbally upset with playing the character, Sia just wanted to do whatever she wanted with her. I wouldn’t be surprised if Maddie comes out speaking more about what went on with her relationship with Sia at some point/if she realizes that’s what was going on. At the very least it’s an incredibly toxic and codependent relationship. Poor Maddie just keeps being bounced around from abusive monster to abusive monster.

At this point, I don’t think Sia thinks of Maddie as a human being. She just thinks of her as a doll she can play with and manipulate however she wants.

I hate how Sia said she instantly saved Maddie’s horrible life from “Dance Moms”, yet Maddie literally begged and cried not to do the part for this movie because she didn’t want to offend anyone. Poor Maddie😔💔

14:33 ok so that creator is now known to SUCK, so i wanted to add some context: autism speaks portrays autism in a horrific light, making it out to be this terrible disease that ruins your life and the lives of those close to you... when in reality our brains just work a bit differently. they ALSO have advocated (until late 2016) for finding a cure for autism. autism is highly heritable. they want to find a cure for a brain disorder that is often inherited through parents and present from birth. boy oh boy, that sure does sound concerning! this of course isn't all the information, and i really do encourage you to google this for yourself! i'm just an autistic person here in the middle of the night doing some spontaneous research on their laptop :)

I have a major issue with the restraint scenes as I'm autistic and I have been dealing with restraining and what she did was not just inappropriate. It was cruel, violent, and all around triggering. I used to be considered autistic and I stopped telling people I was because I realized I was treated different. “Oh I didn’t know you were autistic” then starts talking to me like a fkn dog. Like duh! I understand you the exact same way I did before. I noticed in 4th grade in a class I hated because it was talking about how to manage and identify emotions, I tried to ask my teacher “why do I have to learn this! This is something a kindergartner would understand!” Then I saw at the bottom of the worksheet it said “autism awareness” or something like that. At that moment I hated autism, before I thought “oh autism is a good thing!” I now understand that there is a wide spectrum and some autistic people do need help with that. But I felt so mad at the fact that the schools and the people think every autistic person is dumb or something. I have never watched this movie and I never will. Frick sia. When I was twelve or so, I wrote a cringey poem about a friend's disabled cousin thinking I was deep. My sister told me not to give it to the father, and thank God I was too shy to go through with it. This reminds me of that poem - ignorant, self-righteous, and inherently flawed. At least I was a dumb kid who kept it to myself.

I’m autistic and I don’t blame Maddie for this. She’s a kid whose own mother has walked away from her to let Sia raise her instead. She has no one but Sia to guide her and I’m scared to read the book she’ll write about her life one day. I blame Sia. You hit the nail on the head. Autism is different for everyone and this feels like an offensive stereotype that tries to fantasize it and infantilize us.

What also is bad with the restraint scenes is that a lot of the neurodivergent people I know, including myself, are sensitive to touch. I myself view touch as an intimate thing because of my sensitivity to it, touch is a thing only given to those I trust and love, like close friends and family. But even then, I don't think I'll let any of them hold me down like this, and I would be MORE stressed out than anything. What makes it even more worse is that they talked loudly to explain what's going on, when you shouldn't do that, because that will just make the person more stimulated. A better way to show those scenes is to first show that Music is comfortable with touches from the two characters. Something light and easy like her slightly leaning on their shoulder or holding their hand. Then, when she's having an attack, have them ask what's going on and gently grab Music's hand as a way for her to get a stable point. Even then, this isn't recommended, but it's still a lot better than what they showed. If you still want to include those squishes, then show what things are very much an active danger for Music. If she's moving very rapidly and unpredictably in a tight room, then have them mention (again, in a quieter voice) that she could hit her head violently on a wall. That's probably the only time you could do something like this to someone having an attack, when they can be an active danger to themselves and there's no other thing you can do.
