1974 British army had a large excercise on Cyprus when the Greeks paratroopers landed on the island and British forces were taken back to Britain leaving United Nations NATO soldiers behind.

There are two more British military units on the island but outside the SBA. 280 SU Det. Troodos and 33SU in Ayia Nap[a.

this is complete bullshit, cyprus is divided into 2 halves, one has greek speaking Cypriots, the other is occupied by Turkey and has turkish speaking Cypriots. the 2 parts don’t dislike each other, a large majority of both communities support reunification and many many people from both communities cross to the other side every day to work, go to school, buy groceries, see their friends etc. While yes greek speaking cypriots do like Greece, the same cannot he said for turkish speaking cypriots where there’s a growing resentment towards Turkey, since they’re actively colonising north cyprus, trying to destroy the turkish cypriot identity and interfering in our democracy. What? I'm Cypriot and I don't think I speak a different language from the Greek mainlanders...nor that our vocabulary is such extremely different from other regions of Greece. Pontic Greek, Cretan Greek, Ionian Island Greek etc are all dialectical different as Cypriot Greek. Even more so, Cypriots participated in all straggles of the Greek people, beginning with the Greek war of Independence. So, I don't want to thinking that you made this comment out of some agenda but you misinformed people trying to pursue a narrative that Cyprus was something "different"...more fluid and more exotic than the rest of the Greek speaking areas when it was actually a very ordinary Greek speaking land with its own specific characteristics. @@vanmars5718 I know. Most people don't realise it, but technically it has the characteristics that would allow it to be classified as its own language. A good example of a language that seems almost indistinguishable from its "parent" language is Scots, which is considered its own language. Cypriot has more deviations from dialects like the Cretan's. Examples "ornitha" is an ancient Greek remnant and "kanjelo" is an Italian word. The Cypriot language has a LOT of these amalgamations that go unnoticed. I'm sorry you feel insulted by the comments but I didn't make up the technicalities of what differences are needed for a "dialect" to be considered its own language... You're not alone in your thinking and your comments are the perfect illustration why I said even though it technically could be classified as its own language, politically it will never happen.

Completely untrue. For starters the Republic of Cyprus completely funds the small Greek troops there with the intend to protect some zones too from the Turks. The Republic also provides electricity to the bases of Britain and also to the occupying's Turks because Greeks are in enclaves there. All 5 armies in the island including the UN forces and the Cypriot National Guard (the largest by far force on the island) are entirely relied on the republic. If Cyprus stopped feeding the British they would die the next day by starvation.

The language is not the problem, especially since before the Turkish Invasion in 1974 the turkish Cypriots also talked the Cypriot dialect (it's greek with a lot of ancient words, different syntax and some turkish words). The only problem is that Turkey illegally occupies the north part of the country since 1974 and imported a lot of Turkish settlers there to influence the island and change its demographics. What is been asked for decades is for Turkey to stop the illegal occupation of the north and remove its troops so Cyprus can be united again. Greece and Turkey should not have a say in Cyprus' politics.

Well now do not over say ... the greek element and Greece is the largest in the entire "free part" of the island. The language, customs and even the national anthem of Cyprus are Greek. If it was not the island under the occupation of UK it would be entirely a "Greek island". The fact that an independence was "given" for the eyes of the world does not mean that the historical and social relationship that Cyprus has with Greece should be forgotten.

There are many things that us Cypriots try to do in order to adapt to this new circumstances we live in. Back in the 50s, YES, Cyprus should be part of Greece since it has been a greek speaking island for thousands of years and it was(and still is) mainly consisted by Greeks. They've been trying to change the country's demographics by importing more Turks to the island and they influence the north more and more each year, every day. They should be codemned for that as well... but what can Cyprus do? Throw all the Turks to the sea, act violently because Turkey is also violent?...We''ll only get more wars and bloodshed. What is needed to do is finally try putting things behind and being united for once, for peace, and if Turkey is still ignoring these calls, it will only make itself look bad internationally. Cyprus has always been a greek populated island, it's common sense by now. But it's also independent and is seeking for peace and a better future for all its citizens. Also, we kinda got used to being independent...our language might be greek but it uses a different dialect and far more ancient greek words than modern day Greece does that sometimes Greeks really don't understand us. So it makes sense to be on our own without ofcourse forgetting our greek ancestry and roots, that will never happen. No, neither Greece nor Turkey claim it. Turkey militarily occupies the Northern third but considers it an independent Republic. The entire island legally belongs to the Republic of Cyprus, which de fact controls only the Southern part and since 1964 has been run by Greek Cypriots (but it is a legitimate government independent from Greece). The Republic of Cyprus refuses to join NATO because of popular resentment against it due to the invasion, although currently there is one major candidate for President who supports NATO membership.

Life is getting harder for the west and the world, so people are less generous. Its also understandable that Turks don't trust or like Russia for historical reasons. As for the Kurdish people, they have been regionally distinct for a long time and could do with a referendum, but this is not the UK with that kind of democracy.

Honestly, a two state solution here is the best solution. It's been like 60 or so years, this is becoming like a mini Taiwan situation. Northern Cyprus is basically a country and both sides are going separate ways in terms of culture and identity.

So you understand, these people fought for what was thought genuinely right for Cyprus at the time and the Brits refused to see it probably for their own profit (isn't always like that with us humans?) Anyway, it's been some time, not hard feelings. We really got used to you being around and trading goods and you seem to got used to us as well. Despite the drama of the past, we like that we share something with UK and it just seems like two nations helping each other. Turks however... they just don't chill do they? 😂

People often confuse EU and NATO. While there are significant overlap countries that belong to both, they are two different entities. EU is an economic and political union (with more internal focus of cooperation) while NATO is a military union (with focus on external threat). People think that member states within NATO behave like the EU, but they are not.

To add to your comment NATO's primary concern is Russia. It is an organization found during the cold war to oppose the Soviets. As such not all countries have a geopolitical opposition or military concerns regarding Russia. In the case of Cyprus, its geopolitical interests are in Eastern Medeteranian Sea. So it doesn't make that much sense to join an organization whose area of interest do not align with theirs.
