What is cystinosis? With cystinosis, “cystin-” refers to cystine, an amino acid, and “-osis” implies disease. So, cystinosis is a rare condition caused by mutations of the CTNS gene that leads to a cystine buildup in the body.

My son has cystinosis. I was really surprised to find a informative animation about it that was actually accurate. Awesome! The only thing I would have added is that kidney transplantation is also a treatment as every cystinosis patient with the infantile type requires one at some point. My son was transplanted at age 9.

@@theoneitself I take Procysbi and other complentary medicins as Potassium and Sodium. I'm 17 and I take something as 35 pills by day.. But despite of that, I have a life which can looks like other people, for now. In 2 years, Geny therapie will be available in France and I'll have an hope to take less medicins by changing my DNA to destroy the disease. So, finally thanks to science there is a lot of hope, not only for cystinosis but for all genetic diseases.

Amazing video! I just want to share/clarify: CystEINE is an Amino Acid. CystINE is a dimer that forms when two Cysteine amino acids combine via disulfide bond. The cystine dimer is what forms the crystals.

I'm 50 years old and for at least the last 20 years I've been miserable. I constantly need to pee even though I drink next to nothing (I've been admitted twice to the Emergency for Dehydration), I get small white crystals forming on my eyelids and now in the corners of my eyes where the tear ducts are. Should I get tested for Cystinosis and what would be the best remedy for it. Thanks alot

You should definitely talk to your doctor, hopefully they can help you get appointments with the nephrologist (kidney specialist) and oftalmologist (eye specialist) and they can test you to find the cause. People with cystinosis usuallly have photophobia (eyes sensitive to light) and are often thirsty. In any case, talk to your doctor.

The singular amino acid is cysteine. When 2 cysteines are oxidized, via disulfide bond between them it is then called cystine. So basically just a dimerized cysteine
