My dad still has his father's Garand with the full complete kit. Original sling (as well as the replacement he was issued), original bayonet, around a dozen clips, his cleaning kit, all of it. It all comes to me eventually.

2nd story, peace is still an option, but there will be new terms that use the words "liberation" in reference to the Caterpillar people. Especially when you remember their Ambassador's last words "the blade bent on his flesh", makes it very easy to negotiate better terms when the enemy believes that their weapons don't work on you.

Fiddlers Green was originally an afterlife for sailors, but in the US military, it's a cavalry paradise. Here is the first part of the Cavalryman's Poem: Halfway down the trail to Hell in a shady meadow green, are the Souls of all dead troopers camped near a good old-time canteen, and this eternal resting place is known as Fiddlers' Green. Marching past, straight through to Hell, the Infantry are seen, accompanied by the Engineers, Artillery and Marine, for none but the shades of Cavalrymen dismount at Fiddlers' Green. So old Jimmy should have been in a recon unit, not infantry hitting the beach like that. If I recall correctly, recon troops were not landed on D-Day proper but were offloaded later.

6:57 currently this Memorial weekend there are 14 million United States Military veterans. Most of us own firearms and damn sure know how to use them. Xenos beware. Technology does not always win the day. There are plenty of soldiers, marines, seamen, and aviators past and present who can and will step up when called. That should get the aliens thinking, though not accurately.
