Dad Cancels Hospice For Mom

My dad cancels hospice for my mom. He was supposed to bring my brother to sign her into hospice. I told him I couldn't live with myself if I put my name on that and he understood and didn't hold it against me. He was pressured into sending her by the case manager. This is really important to hear what he says at the end of this video, and I wanted to show this video in full because of what happened to my dad after this video was filmed. I have to put the video together and tell the story of this, but everyone should know the reality of case managers in hospitals when you have a critically ill family member. The case managers, one of which was particularly bad and called my moms room the "death wing" in front of us several times - they have nothing to do with the care of your family member. They only deal in financials for the hospital and the discharge of your family member. My mom has insurance and so far these hospital stays have racked up over $200K and the insurance has paid most of it. However, the longer a hospital has my mom, the more money they lose, even though insurance pays for her stay. This is why a case manager will meet with you and demand you sign discharge papers even though there is NO safe place for her to go. It is important for me to tell this story because of how unfair this has been, and this case manager has blood on her hands. There is no real update for my mom, I am just trying to get her therapy which they have continued to delay and deny, even though she is awake and NEEDS to move due to contracture of her muscles, which is NEGLECT from the hospital!

Praise The Lord!! Your story has touched my very soul; My Dad had a stroke followed by what they've deemed as 3 mini-strokes. He was doing good, until he wasn't, and day after day things got worse and worse, until he finally went into coma too. Had we listened to the staff, we would have put him in hospice too... Today, 4 years & 3 months later, he is OUT PLAYING GOLF as I type this hunny!! I swear!! Sometimes people need a long time to recover; Dad was in coma for just shy of 4 long months, with very limited brain activity. But, here we are today, and Dad is playing "a quick 18 holes" and coming home to help the hubby BBQ dinner. God is good, and sometimes, daughters know more than doctors, Andrea!! ❤

My mom had a couple major strokes about 11 years ago and the doctors tried with all of their might to convince me to put her on hospice and "let her go" because she was in a coma-like state for 3 months. Barely opened her eyes, they also put a feeding tube in. Well after that 3 months she started slowly waking up and within about 7-8 months she was totally awake, knew what was going on, can talk just like us and had her memory. She's unfortunately paralyzed on the left side but other than that, she made a full recovery mentally, just with a tad of short term memory. Moral of the story is stroke patients need to given TIME to heal. If there's not much improvement in the first few months, that doesn't necessarily mean they won't wake up or make any positive progress. Sending love and prayer to you and your family ❤

I am absolutely appalled at how neglectful the hospital staff/doctors have been. It's clear they do not give a rats backside about the patient getting the proper care that they need. Imagine those who don't have any family coming in to check on them like you have. What a miracle though, thank you Lord!

That’s so awesome!! It’ll be a long road to recovery but she’s still young, she’s strong and seems very determined. You’ve done a great job Andrea!!! Thank goodness you and the kids have been there with her. Makes a huge difference. I’m glad you guys repositioned her. She looks much more comfortable. Keep those doctors and nurses in line because if not for you being her strongest advocate who knows what would happen.

I’m so glad hospice is cancelled. I truly believe your mom will continue to improve. I’m curious, where did you get that healing light? I’ve never seen one before now, but it’s a great idea. We will continue to pray for your mom’s healing. 🙏❤️🙏 It’s so nice to see some relief come over you, Andrea. Be hopeful & stay positive. Your mom is doing so great!

oh yes and also, so my dad was in a medical induced acoma because of drug withdrawals being so bad. once they lowered medications and all these different things that were giving him “a high like symptoms” he started to communicate it seemed like a miracle because we were told he was going to have alcohol induced dementia. now he’s on a full recovery. i still till this day question hospital decisions

Andrea, I wonder if it may be helpful to ask your mom questions and have her blink once for yes and twice for no. So if there is a word you think she mouthed, but are not sure, you could ask her (for example) "Mom, did you ask for water? Blink once for yes or twice for no" It may have her feeling more in control, as I imagine she must be so frustrated not being able to have her intentions understood. She is beyond blessed to have you fighting her corner. She raised you right - you are a fighter, just like her xx

My grandma was in the hospital late last year because she had the flu. While she was in the hospital, she was eating, and she aspirated on a piece of broccoli. The doctors were able to bring her back to life, but she wasn’t able to talk. She could write things on paper, and people can read her lips. She is home now, but I believe she’ll have to do rehabilitation and learn how to do things again. My grandma is a miracle. She’s been in the hospital, she has died and came back to life more than once.

Have faith Andrea! My aunt had a aneurysm in 2012?? It was after her husband died they said it was stress related. Luckily when she had the stroke?? She was on the phone to her daughter and was about to get in the tub and started slurring her speech etc. My cousin was able to call 911 and call my aunt’s neighbor over to my aunt’s house to help her as my aunt daughter aka my cousin lived in another state. If she had not been talking to my cousin she probably would have fell and hit her head on tub or something worse and no would know she had a stroke and possibly would have died. She lost some of her memory and they operated on her brain etc. She was in hospital for months. It took a couple years but she made a full recovery with speech therapy, physical therapist etc. She was 65?? at the time.

I hope I am not letting my mom down right now because they are refusing to give her any therapy and constantly delaying. If ANYONE knows how I can get her therapy (they said all she needs to be is awake) now they are saying she needs to follow commands and move on her own. She needs HELP moving! She just woke up from coma, I dont understand how you can walk if youre a newborn. If you know anything let me know. I dont know what to do!

Andrea, I just wanna tell you how incredibly happy I am for you and your mom! It's basically miraculous how the timing of her being moved to hospice plus delays and then her suddenly waking up happened. I lost my little brother 3 years ago. He was only 17, and had been declared brain dead. We spent a few days watching over him while doctors did two brain death tests on him. They told us that even if he did respond and we opted to keep him in care, that he was not going to be himself but rather more of a "vegetable." My parents decided to let him go. It's something that will remain with myself, siblings, and parents. But I just kind of wanted to share my own experience with how hospitals treat your loved ones when they're in such critical conditions and how family is given so little time to make choices. I love you, your kids and mom- your whole family, Andrea! Thank you so much for keeping us in the loop. May grandma make a speedy recovery ❤.

I live in Texas and have worked on a TBI ICU unit where occupational therapy/physical therapy was provided for people in “Minimally conscious states” x 5 days a week. Perhaps talking to the therapy department will help you better understand the criteria for receiving services while she is in the hospital. Bring in sensory and personal items to help with arousal. (Aroma therapy, textured balls, ice/heat exposure, family photos, favorite books, clothing ect)

Thank you very much. I had to really fight with these people, but she is awake and its 'billiable' so they do have to come see her and help her. Today was the first day they saw her, and I had to actually write a risk report yesterday and have them take notes and pictures of her, and of everything because she was in really bad shape when I got there yesterday. It must have been reviewed by someone because today everything was perfect and she had therapy. FINALLY! Tonight I think I will be able to finally sleep!

The hearing is the last to go,!!! I was an private inhome nurses asst.i would have them do a compleat skin check, with you there !!! It doesnt take much for a skin leasion to become septic !!!

I would not cancel hospice though, they can be extra help for your mom when nurses are busy. If they see she is recovering they will take her off hospice themselves. For my dad they came and did things and turned him often So he didn’t get bed sores often etc and it’s things like nurses don’t have time to do as often as they should.

They should have kept her in the hospital then they could have done all the therapy for her there if they had just given it a little more time. Sad to hear esp when I work in the hospital and see stroke patients everyday. Typically those patients stay in hospital especially if there is still brain activity then once the patient is strong enough to leave the hospital they can order home therapy then outpatient. Try calling and communicating with her PCP to see what options you have. If where she's at doesn't offer PT and OT they can have someone come out to her. Best of wishes and I'm glad to hear she's awake. ❤

Still keeping u all in my prayers! Arr nurses not repositioning her at all? When my best friend was in coma from a stroke they repositioned her at least once a day so she didn't get bed sores & stiffen up to bad.. Keep waking up sweetheart!! We're all here cheering you on ❤❤
