I'm a big fan of Lovecraft & 'Dagon' is one of the very best adaptations IMO - great film! Another film I'd highly recommend is John Carpenter's 'In The mouth Of Madness'. Not based on a particular story; but Lovecraft inspired & at points captures that existential horror like few other films.

Yes, 'In the mouth of madness' is awesome! Like you said, it captures that existential horror like few other films. :)

I mostly like the atmosphere of this film and it's location. It sometimes swings from cheesy to shock gore, which drags it down, though there was a cute scene where the main character tries to fend off his attackers with his cell phone. In 2001 they made cell phones really small....that was the joke. The one scene that was way too good for the rest of the movie was the old man's tale of how the Dagon cult started in the town. It could have been a much better film had it continued with that narrative instead of being sucked into the shock value and whimsical comedy of the main actor, who I had a hard time taking seriously. I would recomend some of the authentic looking Lovecraft films made by the HP Lovecraft Society. They were filmed in black and white, and they were made to emulate films of the classic noir period.

Was there some hidden reason why this adaptation of 'The Shadow over Innsmouth' was called 'Dagon'? Even in the making-of feature on the DVD, the filmmakers present the idea that they've made 'Dagon', when very clearly they haven't!
