Here’s something you should know. One of the greatest things about doing farmers’ walks is you can massively decrease your chances of an injury, compared to a deadlift.
This study compared the biomechanical characteristics of farmers' walks, deadlifts, and unloaded walks in six experienced male strongman athletes performing at 70% of their 1RM deadlift.
The farmers' walk showed significant differences with greater trunk extension, thigh angle, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion at knees passing. It exhibited significantly greater mean vertical and anterior forces compared to the deadlift.
Overall, it suggests that the farmers' lift is a much safer and more effective alternative to the deadlift, generating more anterior-propulsive and vertical force with less stress on the lumbar spine due to a more vertical trunk position. So, you’re good to do this everyday and it will change your life! But what about the benefits?

I'm a pretty strong 42yo dude. I workout regularly and also swim and run regularly. I deadlift 335, bench 225, and squat 225. Not the strongest ever, but decently strong for a 5'8" guy. The track I run at has two sandbag contraptions with handles on them. I brought my scale to the track a few days ago and weighed these bag things. 40 pounds each on the dot. I farmer walked them around the track one lap, set them down and then ran into couple miles. This was done the day after a heavy leg and core day. The next day I was so depressed. My body hurt and was exhausted, and my brain was in a very bad mood. Next time I'll bring a couple of my 20 pound dumbbells and start off a little easier on my farmers walk journey.

I was in prison for two years and worked out almost every day and came out a beast. Got a job right after I got out setting mobile homes and modular homes which is very hard work and it killed me at first. I would much rather have practical strength than gym strength any day. Both together is best though

My father used to feed buckets of cracked wheat to 200hd of cattle every morning starting in mid fall. Increasing the amount of grain every day. By spring melt when it was muddy he was carrying 2 buckets in each hand with each trip becoming 16ft shorter from 120ft and sprint back to the barn for more. He gained 10lbs of muscle each winter and used this yearly conditioning to full advantage by putting in a mile of new fence posts each spring and had forearms bigger than his upper arm along with quads than would shame any body builder. Not bad for a 175lb man in his 60's. I'd burst with pride if I was half the man those old bastards were.

Yeah same, I do my farmers walks near last at gym , they have a separate calisthenic area, so do some minor muscles with cords , maybe some bulgarian squats, or kettle ball RDL/swings , some pylo box jumps ( do my pullups in gym ) , Only have 28 KG max kettlebells in there as opposed to day 50Kg dumbells in the gym , but I'm 59 so that's ok . i start with wide hip opening weighted lunges . Then do the carries head out with 2 28Kg to opposite side and drop one return come back to start with one , then back pick other ,in opposite hand , then return and come back , then walk both . Do one hand to strengthen core stability. Now will incorporate backwards walk as well, if area not too busy, But yeah always finish gym area with a hang , and Calisthenics area with a hang . cycle home as warm down and warm up to gym. Started beginning of this year

I'm 72 yo. I started working out with weights at 45. Bought the weight / body building books and magazines (Ironman, etc.) . To my recollection a Farmer's Walk was generally always a aprt of the recommended regimin. I did them occassionally without realizing how much this exercise is a Body Wide muscle enhancer contributing to overall Strength. Body Building is one thing, but Strength building is another!. My health issues - mostly all spinal maladies that continued to encroach everywhere affecting my overall well being - forced me to basically Shut down the workouts. But latlely, with a bit of renewed energy (which is limited) I have begun to workout again - with lighter weights. I'm going to include the Fw into my regimin for sure. Like Squats but better at engaging so many muscles and better for my Back. Moral to my comments are : Take care of your SPINE - man, it is the Manin compenent to your body and nervous System, and drink more water. I never did in the past. Your Back Discs are 80% WATER and once they degrade (like me) they Do Not Regenerate!!

I started doing these 5 years ago when I turned 65, as an alternative to my previous weight training routine, which was resulting in 'old man injuries'. Prior to doing the FW, I was carrying two 5 gallon buckets of water 100 yards to water newly planted Norway Spruce trees and soon figured out I would not have to weight train on my watering days. I never knew the FW had a name!

For an impromptu workout on non gym days I'll take my kettle bell for a walk around the neighborhood and do some swings, cleans and squats along the way ala Dan John armor building because the legs need a little extra something to feel worked. Throw in some push ups and everything gets touched. This is a good way to unlocking the power of isometrics for those who don't yet get it.

Been doing single handed kettlebell carries for a couple of years. One surprising benefit was my bad shoulders. Since the totator cuff helps hold the shoulder girdle together, they have to work isometrically in the carry. I walk .25 miles to the park, then do 4 laps around the park doing swings, shoulder presses, squats and ab leg lifts at the corners. My bad shoulders feel much better when I'm regularly doing these exercises. I use a 50 or 70 lb kettlebell depending on if I've built up to the bigger weight.

Distance is king; I have done literally in the many thousands of loaded carries including farmer's walks. *This is saying that if I do 20 lbs x 2 for 2-3 football field length laps in the sand then go up to 60 lbs x 2 for 1 full lap, I get exponentially more results than had I done 300 lbs for 150 feet.* The time under tension of moderate to modest weight for extreme distances is incredibly deeply fatiguing whereas a short distance with 300 lbs is just very hard and stressing on the joints and connective tissue in a way that is not beneficial, it's wear and tear. *Huge weight for short bursts has it's benefits, but it's really not a lift where extreme weight is healthy or significantly rewarding.* People doing them with massive weight are usually performing them for competitions. *It's also a lift where it is in fact OKAY to round your back or coordinate yourself into different positions to target muscles differently.* Because it's not being done with extreme weight when performed correctly, the range of what qualifies as "bad form" is 10x smaller than if doing extreme weight.

I have two 30-liter cans that I fill with water to desired level and I transport them all over the house: from living room to kitchen, to bedroom, back and forth, all over the villa.

I think if you can do a 30 minute garner walk your using weights that are too light. I do a one minute farmer walk with two 50 pound dumbbells. Four sets so that’s four minutes. And I get a great workout out.

Hi. Can I add a farmer's walk to my daily rucking? I'm 56 and ruck 6-7 km with 10 kg weight in my rucksack🙏😊.

Yup...it is those farner walks. Walking a mile with tons of coding books, and my ten ton purse. The reason everyone wanted to know how I became so powerful and bulletproof at my advanced age. Two miles of this every day. I chose the parking lot farthest away on purpose. My trainer asked me to throw my purse to him, he got knocked over, because I lift it with ease. Nearly killed him. But I had to laugh. Farmer walks are the best!

I do four carries of about 90 seconds each with two 24kg kettlebells, just to give you an idea. The limiting factor for me is grip.

Depends on how heavy. Two 50 pounders I just walk around the gym as my last strength training exercise of the day. 73 at 200 pounds. Trying to get to 180.

Better yet...find a long steep hill or long set of steps, weight belt or ruck sack with weight attached, dumbbell's in each hand and hold dumbbell's as far out to the side as you can or do lateral raises as you walk. This will build shoulders very quickly. Sometimes i drag a fat chick in a little lawn mower trailer attached to my weight belt behind me too if I'm really feeling good that day. But that's on level ground or only a slight hill. Not up the steps.
