As someone who wants to be an engineer genuinely, and is Indian, this episode starts like a therapy session for me. There are great teachers here, but our education system is so excessive and focused so much on grades that it is really infuriating. It takes away the joy of learning. And the worst part is, it is merciless. You don't have enough time to get over someone's death or get really ill in highschools. You have to study, and being expected to keep going even when you are just 17 is really rough

If this is the US then yep. Schools were made to be exactly like work environments. It was made so you get used to working 8 hour days with set breaks, and if your gone make it seem like its your fault. Or if you get bad grades to be similar to not making quota at work. It's really fucking bad for a learning environment. The whole school system needs to be revamped but it'll never happen anytime soon.

Dude, right after I graduated highschool in 2012 my brother started in 2012. He was forced on this first day to "pick a career path" to solely focus on this entire four years of high school. Such as a medical field path, engineering path, liberal arts path etc, THEN pick a specific line of work. So, imagine this. 1. Pick medical path. 2. Pick Internal medicine 3. Pick Doctor, Nursing, Surgery. 4. All classes planned for the four years. =/ No kind of exploring different classes or anything. It's fucked man.

I'm not a sommelier but my understanding is that the reason they get you to taste the wine beforehand is because most wine in Europe is corked and if the seal was bad the wine will have oxidized and will taste like shit so, they are effectively giving you the chance to ensure it hasn't gone bad before saying "yes, I will pay for this".
@jordi95
@jordi95 Жыл бұрын
Not only that, cork can get fungi as well (even though they treat it and control for it before producing the corks) and that can ruin a wine/sparkling whine too. And the cork is one of the best things you can use since the wine and sparkling whine can "breathe" a little bit since it is porous. If not, that can change the taste too. So yeah, there's a lot of reasons for it, so its completely normal to taste it before drinking. You should let the wine "air" a little bit before drinking as well btw. Pd:I'm not a sommelier but I'm involved in the cork industry, so I know more about the cork itself than the wine, so take it with a grain of salt

I'm not going to list them all but one of them was so passionate about her art history class that it made everyone love the class. She was fast pass and had a lot of information to give out but she hit every way that someone could learn. She had visuals, videos and audio, paper handouts, a few examples of actual art in the classroom and white board notes. Heavy note taking in her class but she had it down with such speed and care that even though the information was going fast you never felt like you were falling behind. She would also make sure everyone got it at the end of the class. Gosh I miss that class lol

1:49:45 As someone who did enology in university (blind wine tasting travel team), some wines are "corked" this basically means that the cork used is spoiled and will completely change the smell and taste of the wine.This becomes more apparent the more wine knowledge one gets. So they do the tasting for you to confirm that the wine does not have any faults (some wines are legit not drinkable). Turning away a wine with faults is comparable to turning away a skunked beer.
@neutatamayo8365

@chefmaniafgc
@chefmaniafgc Жыл бұрын
@@neutatamayo8365 If you have a decent nose you don't even need to try it (smelling is enough), but you can't tell by sight. You can only tell by sight if the wine is oxidized (a different fault in wine). You won't get sick or anything lol, it just tastes pretty bad. People that are new to wine and still are in the "everything tastes the same" phase usually will not be able to tell the difference. Depending on the restaurant they will do different things. A corked wine is a perfect opportunity to teach your staff about the smell and taste of "cork taint" so I would actually have them blind taste that vs a regular wine so they become proficient at recognizing it.

The issue is that some wine tasters act like snobs as if they can taste the year or more expensive wines.... But in actual tests they are usually proved to be bullsh*tting. Thats not to say theres nothing to it, just that the idea behind it is tainted by the people who think they are some kind of high class god.
@chefmaniafgc
@chefmaniafgc Жыл бұрын
@@h8rsbeware496 I 100% agree that the community of wine has a lot of people that really have no clue of what they are talking about; nevertheless, you can for a fact taste the year. My expertise is in Champagne (I worked there and competed there for a couple years) and If they give you say Taittinger Blanc de Blancs 2007 vs 2008 any proficient blind taster will notice the difference immediately. Years have different weather cycles, are affected by different mineral retention in the soil and even the shift in construction can affect the environment. This is getting more into viticulture as opposed to enology (heavy chemistry based), but in the end if someone is paying 10k on a screaming eagle I wouldn't say that the wine is bullshitting the consumer. It is usually when one is trying to impress people and most of the time they will talk out of their ass.

@@chefmaniafgc Im not gonna pretend i know, cause i don't personally drink anymore, however i can believe the weather cycles and environment does have an effect on taste, whether or not you can taste that seems like a really specific skill but I have no reason to not believe you cause knowing the years you are blind testong begore hand would definitely make it more feasible. Might be worth me looking into it more, rather than a couple of studies that just test your typical "snob"... Which isnt really a far trst on the whole community!

The Engineering degree talk at the begin brought back war flashbacks. I felt the Ancient Chinese History part SO DAMN HARD. I did Engineering out of highschool, I wanted to be a Software Engineer - in highschool I made programs all the time for fun; by the time I went into University I'd made dozens of complete little games for fun and knew C/C++, Java, and web coding to a pretty proficient degree. I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Then I went into Engineering. And they make you do general entry-level engineering, rather than software engineering specifically. I suffered through it, drowing in physics and matrix algebra and calculus, just desperately trying to wrap my head around this stuff to pass this crap so I could finally specialize and go into what I actually wanted to do. The coding course that was part of it might as well have been a "hello world" tutorial off a random blog for how useful it was in the start, and then a month in it suddenly jumped to an entirely different realm and people who hadn't already been doing all of it like myself were just hopelessly lost. I was a zombie just dragging myself around, until I found myself in an ancient mythology class questioning how on earth I had got there and why I was even trying to get the stupid degree anyways. I walked out and just didn't show up again - which is stupid, please make sure you remember to drop out of class properly instead of just never showing up again - I got hired so easily I was in shock. I'd spent two years of my life stressed and drowning, feeling like I could barely keep my head above the water, crying myself to sleep in frustration some nights because I just couldn't understand shit - and all for it to be utterly meaningless.

Well I haven't finished the video but just want to say that Matlab is still extremely useful in specific problems where pure math is a heavy factor since playing around with something like complex matrix problems is made much easier through Matlab. But for general usage and problems being complex in the programming itself rather than the math, Python is way better for sure.
@aidanclark196
@aidanclark196 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think python is still better than Matlab for matrix stuff. I didn't use it for too long, but it for me it just feels like Mathworks just put a pretty coat over python with numpy scipy and matplotlib then made it commercial. Just my opinion though. Though I guess that pretty coat can make things simpler to handle in some cases when graphical interfacing is needed, which admittedly I never used.
@strepie93

@@aidanclark196 Matlab is way older though, so it is not that Matlab commercialised numpy/scipy. Also system modeling (simulink) is very useful for modeling control systems.

@@strepie93 I didn't mean they literally took python with some added libraries and made it commercial, I just mean starting in a python environment and then being told to work in Matlab it just felt like a worse python lol, but I did word it a bit pointedly. And to counter your other point, numpy actually does have a differential equation solver, and it's not too bad in the limited use I've had with it, and I have colleagues that use it for differential equations way more complicated than I've ever needed it for and it doesn't seem to give too much trouble. However I've never used the diffeq solver in Matlab, so maybe it's just way better.

@@aidanclark196 Indeed numpy does have a difeq solver and it is somewhat comparable to the Matlab one, but in Matlab it is more extensive.
