Coming out of the 1990's, NASCAR was beginning to see new ways of business and new business owners looking to take over the sport. One of these owners was legendary driver Dale Earnhardt.

Following the 2001 Daytona 500 though, Dale Earnhardt would tragically lose his life at the end of the race, giving control to his wife and business partner, Teresa Earnhardt.
This is where things would go wrong in the story of DEI. How different would the team's history with Dale still around? We will never know, but what we do know is that DEI rose to power and appeared to be a team that was there to compete at the highest level, but it did not last. Here is the story of Dale Earnhardt Incorporated's rise and hard fall.

Give this to junior; he certainly knows how to pick em. He helped launch the careers of Truex, Keselowski, and even Alex Bowman. These guys were virtually unheard of before junior gave them an opportunity. Now, they’re three of biggest names in nascar today.

Why didn't you just say things better being a Race Car Driver? I was a huge fan. It was no mystery that Teresa Earnhardt's a b****. Dale jr. Was a grown man by the time Dale Earnhardt died why hadn't such legalities been taken care of in case such an event? He deserve some of the blame my friends

Not only sponsors, but crew members/shop personnel. And the drivers. They would of brought up some awesome talent. Its a shame that DEI got ran into the ground faster then hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in 2016. Im trying to imagine how it would be today, if jr and Kelly were able to take over.

That being said my point was Dale would also look at the total picture and Brand rivalry and people being aligned with different brands is the most important thing for competition. hence my comment that he would be upset if people didnt try to get their own plug in when they could. I'm sure he would smack you on the back of the head and say this is my video boy but be really be happy you gave him the opportunity to do so.

The fall is #SpinGate. Michael waltrip racing would still be a team probably fighting for Clint Bowyers 3rd championship. NASCAR would be a lot different if Waltrip was still here because of all of the driver change ups the teams closing caused

I hate Teresa Earnhardt as much as anyone. However, if Dale Jr. couldn't win a Championship at Hendricks Motor Sports using the same equipment as Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson....he likely wouldn't have won one anywhere.

Big Earnhardt fan but that is how it goes in life sometimes. When my dad passed he left everything to my stepmom with the agreement when she passes that what is left goes to my siblings and I. Well that was 20 years ago. Who knows what will happen as the stepmom has moved on. In the end, it was what my dad wanted and I have to respect that. We will never know what Dale wanted longterm as his death was sudden where my dad had a few months to think about things. Perhaps if Dale could see how it all turned out he would have planned differently but then again, we will never know.

All the power went straight to her head once Dale Earnhardt passed. I’ve ranted on this topic before so I’m not gonna go on a long tangent but she was all for herself. It was obvious Dale Jr knew what he was doing on the owner side of things winning championships with Martin Truex Jr in the Busch Series. That same success could’ve easily come to DEI under Dale Jr’s and Kelly’s leadership but that would mean Teresa wouldn’t have the power

While it is JR Motorsports it is his sister that that provided the stability for the success. Kelly and Junior are the real winners together.

Exactly! If Teresa couldnt gain from it financially, she wasnt gunna let it happen. She thought when sr passed she could run DEI and gain from it. She stripped jr from any rights to dei other then driving. She had a fit when jr drove the 3 in 2002 at Daytona in Busch series. Because she couldnt fain from it. She demanded RCR not to bring the 3 back for Austin. Because she couldnt gain from it. I had no problem the 3 being brought back to nascar. If they brought the black 3 goodwrench, hell ya I'd be pissed. But it's a number. Dale drove a few different #s. I never held any hard feelings for jr leaving dei. I understood immediately who Teresa Earnhardt is. She never had good intentions for Dale's kids. She wanted them all gone to military or boarding schools growing up. Nascar would be completely different as in team power and competitors today if jr and Kelly has say in their fathers company.

@@kawi4189 Dale Sr is the one who sent them to military school. Theresa wanted them to try public school again iirc. That said, she definitely fucked up everything after Dale Sr passed. Once the kids were older she was a bitch to them. I don’t think Dale Sr is rolling in his grave or angry that DEI no longer exists basically. I think Dale Sr is up there looking down on the success his kids have seen in life doing it on there own. It just shows that Dale Sr, for better or worse, raised them to be successful on their own. They didn’t need Dale Sr to be successful, he just gave them the opportunity and they ran with it. He is proud, just like I would be if the same thing happened to me. He’s probably not happy with Theresa but if it was me I wouldn’t dwell on that.

@@simahe1252 Are you kidding me. Teresa Earnhardt was Dale Sr's third wife. Dale Jr is his son. She basically owns a font and a name, and she abuses that as much as she can. Here are some examples. 1- When Waltrip wanted to pay respect to Dale Sr., only 1 number, the top one was the only one in the correct font, and the side stripes were reduced. Guess why? 2- After T. Earnhardt left Ginassi, the 1 number font was changed. Guess why? 3- In a Budwieser tribute video to Dale Jr, the 8 number was blurred. Guess why? 4- The Kannapolis Intimidators had to go through a name change because they didn't have the rights to the name. What? They don't have the rights to a word? Guess why? 5- The 8 car font for RCR is different from the original 8. Guess why? 6- Kerry Earnhardt got into trouble because he was trying to start a business using his own name. What's more stupid. That she owns a word, a number, and a font? Or that she deserves it all because she was the third wife of Dale Sr. when Dale Jr was his son.

@@anthonyf.3009 FALSE. Once CGR bought Teresa out, and sent her packing, she lost all the copyrights that DEI owned. RCR owned the lettering fonts used on the #3 car. Not an Earnhardt.

The all whole thing was a very sad state of affairs. The loose of Dale Sr hit me very hard. Then to see DEI start to decline and slowly fall apart. Dale Jr leaves Waltrip leaves etc. Who knows how bad it was behind the scenes. Seems like Teresa was greedy and had a bad relationship with Jr. All that hard work and potential gone. I wonder if Teresa ever looks at what Jr and Kelly did with Jr Motorsports and thinks maybe I should have let them run the team.

@DannyBTalks- JD STACEY team 80's crooked team owner Danny B even Dale SR was pissed when Rod Osterlund sold the team to him and Earnhardt SR left after heated confrontation plus there is a lotta dram and crime involved in that one as he had owned or had affiliations with 10 cars in the 80's. Harry Hyde said he ruined him and was a crooked SOB. Look up all the dirt on that Nascar team owner

True. True. Very Effing True. You hit the nail on the Danny. I don't know why she doesn't just go ahead and sale everything back to the people that were born with that last name. Of course, I give it another 5 years and she'll do it. Due to financial reasons. The Kerry story was the one that made me just despise Teresa. But to tell you the truth, the fault doesn't totally come from her side. What really pissed me off about Kerry's situation was that the courts sided with her. He wasn't even doing anything with racing. He was building houses. And as far as copyright and/or trademarks go. You can trademark the style of a name, ie. Dale's signature or, like you showed here your video, the font styles of car numbers that DEI own. And that's it. She can't trademark or copyright a surname. So I can't see how the courts (Judge) sided with her. Damn good video man. Next one should be about Brian France destroying NASCAR after the Bills past on. That always confused the hell out of me, that they would a monster of . . . . company?, to someone that doesn't even like racing or the traditions that NASCAR was built on, ie. dropping the Southern 500 over Labor and moving it the California (I think it was Cali. Could have been Texas or Phoenix) because Darlington didn't have enough "Hotel Accommodations" (His excuse). Guess he never went to that race before. LMAO

I am a huge Dale Earnhardt Sr and Jr fan . I wonder if Theresa blames losing Dale Sr on NASCAR in general . So has she decided to take his legacy and anything to do with him away from all of us . He is even buried in a private gated mausoleum where nobody can come pay their respects to Dale Sr . I just don’t understand her apparent bitterness . The man is the greatest race car driver of all time . He is an American Icon who should forever be celebrated and not hidden away . I still proudly wear my Dale Sr apparel today and try to honor his legacy If Theresa was ever to read this I would say I am sorry for your loss . I couldn’t even begin to understand what that must have felt like to you . I’d say please look inward and think of what Dale would want ? It’s never to late to right a wrong .

DEI was sold to chip gnassi. And then disbanded. I believe he bought it for the entry numbers and whatever rights and equipment. After Teresa ignorantly ran it into the ground, she tried to get any penny she could. It would be a Cinderella story or whatever you wanna call it for gnassi racing would sell all the DEI contents and entry numbers to JR.

I think Dale just passed too soon. He seemed to have a plan that included an 8th championship followed by retirement to being an owner. He had Jr. and Waltrip, and Richard had a young Kevin Harvick waiting in the RCR wings. My guess is he would have pushed those racers to wins while educating Jr. on how to run the business. Then he would have loaded Teresa on that beautiful yacht he had built and retired between the farm and the Bahamas. He was moving people around to make that happened but died a couple years short of actually putting it in action. Teresa never asked to be an owner and had no experience running the whole shebang or managing driver careers. Just a real shame.

It wouldn't be a true NASCAR tale without bad blood between family. Even though Dale Jr never scaled the heights that people predicted for him, he was a winner and did achieve a level of success at the Cup level. Most importantly, he got out alive.

Thanks for doing this video. Aside from the Toyota Truck plug, I found it to be very entertaining and educational. I knewsome of this but did not know the whole story. I like the fact that you mentioned what happened with Michael WaltripSteve Park and some other DEI drivers but am disappointed that you failed to talk abouta lot of the problems plauging Dale Earnhardt Junior as listed in his book. He actually had a lot more going on besidesa battlewith his step mom.

You should do the rise and fall of Petty Enterprises because it actually was a separate team from Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) just to clarify. RPM was the result of Petty Enterprises and Evernham Motorsports coming together.

Absolutely do this. Larry McReynolds tried to back door him with the tide sponsorship. Then Cal Wells took it and his teams sucked. If only Ricky has stayed at Hendrick with Waddell Wilson. That could have been multiple championships.

I miss DEI. I miss Michael Waltrip in the 15 and Dale Jr. in the 8. Well, really, I miss everything about NASCAR in 2002-2003, because those were my first two seasons as a NASCAR fan.

KHI didn't necessarily "fall" Kevin wanted to focus more on his cup career, and winning a Championship. KHI took a lot of his time. the xfinity side of the team, went to RCI, and Kevin is still involved, Kinda like Geoff Gordon is, with the 48 team of Jimmy Johnson.

Kevin's wife ran that show. She grew up around racing. They accomplished what they wanted to and she wanted kids. So they sold it all.

I read allot of comments and as much as i truly was sad when Dale passed away it makes me realize all is not as it seams to be. In his movie when he sees Kerry it dawned on me why he was never there as a father to this boy. Then i see he never made real efforts to be there as a father for him. Now what kind of man turns his back on his own son. That i have a bit of a problem with. Then doing a sport that is known to be dangerous even life ending why would his affairs not be in order. You are running a multi million dollar business and nothing is in concrete. Everything should have been in the finest detail so if something happened to no matter who it was taken care of. Some people are saying he must be rolling in his grave but he must be doing that for one reason. Why was his affairs not in order. Maybe they were maybe not we would never know this but good papers make for good outcomes. As to what i can read and see it was not in this case. At the end of the day Ralph Dale and after JR made what this legacy was and not anyone else. I am sure the family is still well off no tears for millions here.

DE Sr began rebuilding his relationships with his older children later in his life once he became successful. This is why Jr and Kerry began driving for DEI . There's a video of DEsr and Kerry In victory lane at Pocono after Kerry first arca win in 2000

Just wanted to mention that DEI was founded in 84' by Dale and Theresa for the Busch series operation. Also the 01 wasnt a DEI car it came from the Ginn Racing(MB2 Motorsports) and DEI Merger 07' same with the 42 from Chip Ganassi Racing in 08'.

Which is completely disrespectful and wrong. She is selfish and ignorant and probly close to broke now. She ruined DEI because she wanted to gain from it financially. She wouldnt split with any percentage of ownership to Jr. After jr left, it rapidly declined in worth. After DEI couldnt sign anyone worth posting wins or even good finishes, she sold it to gnassi. I wish and I hope that JR buys every car that he can. It only seems right that all those cars in the museum goes to him and only him. It's only sad that he would have to pay Teresa for them. In my opinion she doesnt deserve anymore. She ruined dale sr company he built. I believe she had a influence on jrs career. Yes he went to Hendricks for a better chance to compete. But after any human being going through what he has, losing his father, having his fathers hard built company ripped from him and literally driven into the ground, changed him and his career. If jr was given power and responsibilities of DEI, I believe jr would have retired in the 8 with atleast 1 championship. I also believe you would see Keselowski, truex, possibly chase and maybe even Hamlin driving for DEI. Jr has a taste in finding talent. You see it now with JRM. I hope someday JRM finds it's way into the cup series.
