I never understood why JR had this kind of power, being able to keep Lucy away from her parents like he did, not to mention Miss Ellie and Jock allowing it. I guess I could see that perhaps they accepted Gary not living at Southfork with his drinkking, perhaps it had been decided to let Lucy stay there as her parents couldn't raise a child in their states, but JR had even threatened Valene's life at one point. But if JR had the ability to do that, then it seems like he could have also run Bobby and Pam off and eventually had everything for himself such as the ranch and Ewing Oil.

@alslevie19862 жыл бұрын
JR hated Pam because she was a Barnes (well later revealed to be an adopted Barnes) and JR let her know she was the bastard daughter of a saddle tramp. He still hated her for being Cliff's half sister. He hated Val for being a country hick and what was even more ironic that he eventually married one, because he would go after anything in a skirt. However the writing towards the end was dreadful. It contradicted some of the things from the early days. Bobby not only slept with April but married her. In the early days and JR reminded April of this, that Bobby never ever got involved with anyone that was bedded by JR and April did. JR blackmailed Katherine with it by mentioning Holly Harwood. Holly never had a chance with Bobby because JR bedded her first.

LBF522 simple answer to that. Later episode when Valene and Gary got married , JR wanted to stop the wedding but when he found out that they would not live at Southfork and live in California, he smiled and laughed said " California let them be , in California!!!" JR actually cared deeply about Lucy, helped raise her, and did not think Valene a competent mother. Early in Lucy's life, he was probably right. At this point, not so much. JR also figured Valene and Gary would both be scrounging around for money, which, based on Gary's alcoholism and irresponsibility, and the instability of Valene's circumstances, he felt they were bad investments.

She should have been shifted over to Knotts Landing permanently in 1979. Would have made sense for daughter to live with her parents, and offered more stories for Lucy as she was limited on Dallas because Lucy was not part of the family businesses. In fact, by 1985, Tilton was considered expendable to Dallas. Charlene would have benefited as an actress from the move.

I agree that Lucy would have done much better being on Knots Landing! The writers seem to have little use for her and her character didn't develop much. Ironically The Actress who played Sue Ellen's Mother would also play Lisa one of Richard Gere's Clients in American Gigolo.
@alanslevin82234 жыл бұрын
Sue Ellen was common even though her mother Patricia thought she descended ftom royalty. She was Miss Texas and JR was a judge. It was chemistry. As for Pam? JR hated her due to association...She was related to Cliff. She was what JR called 'the illegitimate daughter of a saddle tramp and the step daughter of the town drunk'. Pam was one of 4 bastards' in the entire run. The other 3 being James, Ray and JR (because that's what Sue Ellen called him even though he wasn't one). When she was furious it was always 'You bastard'. Particularly in season 11. You bastard! You're trying to turn MY son against me.

Keep in mind that Val was only Fifteen when she got Pregnant with Lucy who was just a Child herself. When Gary couldn't handle the demands of being a Ewing (Working The Ranch, Being a Proper Husband & Father), it got to be too much and he started drinking and acted all violent towards Val. She took Lucy, moved to Virginia and then JR took Lucy away from her and threatened her not to have any contact with her again and since Val had no allies, she had no choice but to obey. Bobby was only Thirteen so he couldn't help her either.

Mainly, JR had contempt for Gary because of his alcoholism and inability to face up the responsibilities of being a husband and father. JR held Gary to a reasonable standard and wrote him off when Gary fell far short. You might think part of it was competitiveness over Ewing Oil and Southfork, but that was not in the equation at the time. At the point of this encounter with Valene, you can bet JR is concerned over potential claims Gary and Valene might make on the Ewing fortune.
@CaptainSpalding725 жыл бұрын
