I'm so old, I saw this on stage! Very colourful, but the women had very plain dresses and Benedick ended up in a frightful white suit! There were lots of glasses filled with red crinkled cellophane paper, and although I thought it was all wonderful, that detail is what stuck in my mind...

I vividly remember watching this on American television (1967 or so). I've given up hope that it will be released on DVD which is a great loss to fans and theatre. Dame Maggie said in an interview elsewhere on You Tube that Zefferelli's staging made it extremely difficult to be verbally funny. I think she, Robert Stephens, and the rest of the cast overcame any obstacles brilliantly. Thanks for this glimpse of theatre history.

I watched this on Australian television more than once. I actually taped it ... spool to spool ... and listened to it so often that I pretty much memorised the whole play. I’ve seen other versions, but none come up to this standard. As I remember it, the cast included Frank Finlay as Dogberry, and Derek Jacobi. It was hilarious in all the right places. How I’d love to buy a dvd of it. Sigh...

Yes, Frank Finlay falling full length on the stage as he misses his high desk when striking a pose. Zeffirelli said the play should be like a holiday in Italy. It seems a very long time ago now, two outstanding young actors, and the stage a riot of colour with animated candelabra. One of the great stage productions of all time.

Hello 👋 Is there any chance you might have that taped version? I would LOVE to see it. Can’t even put into words how grateful I’d be.

@@ikemanukyan6396 How I wish that I still had it! It disintegrated, due to much playing and old age. That production left the Branagh version trailing in its dust. And Branagh even pinched some of Dogberry’s best lines for himself. I taught the play to a Year 10 class once, and they had a ball with some of the innuendo (“Does that say what I think it does?” Me: “Yes.” And watched the explanation travel in whispers along the back row …). (Year 10 (Australia) is Form 4 or Sophomore. Kids were 15.)

I fell in love with Maggie Smith watching , The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”! Very confused because attracted to both women & men. Nobody told me that Bi was actually my soul giving “ equality for all” from the innocence of a child that Jesus loved so much . Old age hasn’t changed my soul knowing Maggie shall be in the same place until reborn until we reach nirvana as Buddha taught. ❤

What is Much Ado really about? Social drama? Love and friendship? This video does a great breakdown of the themes of the play: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eq93q5Volqq4qp8.html

A copy has been found in the Library of Congress and it is being restored, but I do not know if it will be released.
