One thing that always pleases me about Dan's conversational style is that he never loses focus of the central point, yet somehow still manages to answer each question in a very well rounded and entertaining manner. Born storyteller and a very sharp man, to say the least.

One of the most eye opening experiences I had in college was taking an intersession history class to get it out of the way and being taught by a visiting professor from Prague. This was the first time I heard about WWII from the Eastern European prospective and it blew me away. It was a revelation that who, when and where you are paints your understanding of history and that facts are not always just facts but informed by human perspective. Later, in grad school I found another fascinating course on hermeneutics and realized it again. I’ve loved history ever since. Love Dan Carlin.

The more I listen to this man, the more I appreciate him and his approach. He seems to have a great balance and the right priority between left-right hemispheres ( as presented by Iain McGilchrist's brilliant book "The Master and his Emissary".) He is also honest and not full of himself - rare qualities these days in the public sphere. Good interview!

What I like about his history podcasts are that he really delves in to the context of an event. The way he makes you understand the context of events on a personal/human level is what draws me to his series. I've began some of his podcasts knowing nothing about the subject and finished them with a new perspective on certain subjects.

That first question about living through history definitely hit home for me. Not to draw comparisons - they're two different events, certainly - but I live in Minneapolis, and I had to go to my grocery store job while the riots were going on last May. I remember needing to buy shoelaces before one of my shifts, and I drove to a CVS near my house, only to find that it had been looted. Then during that shift, they boarded up the windows of our store. That was about as close as it got for me. It was some surreal shit tho, and I still don't really know how to process it.

Terry Pratchett made a comment about our species being "Story telling apes" and by that standard Dan Carlin is the silver back. We are forever trying to define why and how we developed and evolved. Analyzing the 2% difference in DNA between us and chimps. Its not simply language, animals talk. The 2% may be in that we love a good story.

the notion of 2 histories, with one for understanding and one for essentially, entertainment, is very insightful and explains why the internet is full of wikis about fictional works, many humans - who we may refer to as nerds - love to discover, love to ask questions and find answers, we love conjecture. Yeah we like truth, but humans are capable of willing suspension of disbelief - I can read histories of the three kingdoms period in china, or I can read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, or I can read both - and be thankful that both options are available to me.

I like that the guy uses his power for good - it is very easy to use acting and voice acting skills to convey some distorted message for personal gain under the cover of ''educational media". Nowadays everybody lazily expects books to be reformatted as a simple animated synopsis on KZfaq or some vlogger acting out his "reaction" to the book. Yet this podcast will not give you anything that you can't find in the history books. I have read "The Gallic War" by Caeser, History of Rome by Mommsen, Decline and Fall.. by Gibbon... there is a limited number of ways to tell the same story.
