Kathryn Hays (Kim) was an exceptional actress. She was ALWAYS totally overlooked in the lead actress category her entire run. Will never forget her in the Doug Cummings storyline that would follow in 1985/86. Perfection....

It was ridiculous that Kathryn Hays was never nominated for an Emmy. She ought to have won several times! She certainly should have been nominated for the 1979 episodes surrounding Dan's death, and esp. for the Kim/Bob/Susan triangle in 1990-91! (:

This actually felt like a real funeral to me. It was pretty somber and not sure how it would play with audiences today but I loved the religious aspect and how they all left the funeral and went to eat and spend time together and hang out. I miss this kind of stuff on soaps especially in light of the recent Kay Chancellor memorial outdoors at a park.

I agree with you. This is some very great acting it really felt like a really funeral. I wish they would take The Talk off the air and but As The World Turns back on Television.

My mother started watching ATWT from the beginning!! Started watching it once I was married with kids in the 90s...Loved it as much as she did...Wish it was still on for her now that she's in her 80s...Boy,she loved Lisa!!

Henderson Forsythe was such a fine actor, he did some great work here.

This is the last of these beautiful long scenes, where you saw true interaction between the characters. We lost these connections as ATWT and other shows tried to get 'with it'. What everyone forgot, is these connections were the foundations to why we watched. They are what remained after the stupid plots ended. It is also what really could have driven story.

I really enjoyed Suzanne Davidson in the role of Betsy to, even more the adult actresses who played Betsy. Loved the interaction between Suzanne's Betsy and Kim. Ironically, Suzanne played her the longest, longer the the adult actresses, for about 10 years. Thought that was interesting, even more interesting that was an unusally long run for a child playing a character I would imagine.

A great companion piece to watch with the Patricia Bruder Locher room interview. I'm very glad that Alan got the bulk of the As the World Turns veterans on the show. I think the only one he hasn't interviewed is Larry Bryggman.

I hope that we there are other 1979 subsequent episodes forthcoming. These have been a real treat. The "real" ATWT in my opinion. Most of these characters were long forgotten after the Marland era. He brought many back from time to time - even Kelly Wood as Mary Ellison in the late 80's/early 90's for an anniversary celebration for Kim and Bob and Keith Charles as Ralph Mitchell who had a brief romance with Ellen before they were both written out.

After having played Betsy for eight years Suzanne Davison departed and the role was recast with an unknown named.......MEG RYAN!! Yes, THAT one!!

Someone said an actress named Lisa Denton played her for a short time after Suzanne. I watched it from the time Suzanne played her as a child at age 8 until she was a teen but missed it apparently when this Lisa was on there but I know I watched it some when Meg came on there and I remember thinking she was a terrible actress but maybe that was because she totally changed the character. After I saw Meg in movies I felt she tended to play the same kind of role. I liked her in some of them but I was not so crazy about her on As the World Turns.

@@cluvsonj Suzanne had/has a very unique/distinct voice all her own; and if you've ever watched the 1973 TV movie remake of MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET, you would no doubt notice from the moment she speaks that she was Karen. She and probably Greg Thomas who voiced the red haired boy are the only survivng cast members of that holiday special

It's strange seeing Bob and Kim not sitting together because when I was watching this show growing up Bob and Kim were always married.

@Draper Scott I only seen a few episodes with Kim married to Nick. I agree they did seem like a nice pairing but Bob and Kim made one of the cutest couple In daytime. And also your name is the same as a character from ATWT sister soap “The Edge of Night.”

I started watching when Betsy was little, Kim with Dan was a favorite couple of mine. John should look sad, he kept Kim away from Dan when she had amnesia, Betsey's friendship re united them. Suzanna was a great Betsy I guess they wanted her character to grow up, so new actress. . I knew Meg wanted to leave so accepting Frost was fine with me. She did a great job. The show at this time was fine with me. Valerie and her sister were fighting, Grant and Lisa were another couple I liked.

Thanks again for sharing with us. Was that Rita Walter's husband leading the service? Who is that with Lisa? Tom? The scenes with Kim and Betsy are especially moving. I can see why Suzanne Davison was a viewer favorite. Great to see more of Valerie (this is close to her exit). I like how they use change of seasons to emphasize Dan's passing and the emotions of those around him. This is classy soap. I remember in the Marland years we usually didn't see the funeral itself.

I liked Lindsey as well. Lisa Denton took over the role for a short time after Suzanne Davidson. At least Meg looked more like Suzanne than Lisa did. Lisa was a tall brunette. Sadly, Dan Stewart was rarely mentioned much after his death. And, that was truly the end of a saga - the end of the most compelling storyline Patricia Bruder ever had. To think that the story of Dan's parentage lasted for well over a decade, and then he's gone, and all she went through to protect him was lost too.

Lisa Denton actually favored Suzanne Davidson and Meg Ryan was a completely different look. Lindsay Frost, whom I also liked a lot, had an uncanny resemblance to Meg Ryan, just taller.

I'm glad to hear it was her choice. Lindsay Frost reminds me of SD, although I know Frost wasn't that popular with fans. (I liked her) I remember Meg Ryan saying she went on a public appearance with Frank Runyeon soon after she took over for the other Betsy (Lisa something?), and he asked the audience if Meg was the best Betsy ever. She said barely anyone responded, because most of them still preferred Suzanne's Betsy.

@@merricat3025 Did you see Suzanne from the beginning. She originated the role so most times when someone starts with the first person that played it so long they think of them as that role since they created it. I had seen Suzanne from the age of 8 and up play it and she was Betsy to me. Meg I never got into it because she was so different from the character that I knew for so long. IT was like a completely new character and I just did not think Meg was very good at it. She didn't have a lot of depth of emotion to me. It seemed more like she was nonchalant in her acting. If one liked Meg in the role I'd say it was because she created a new character, not the Betsy that we always knew and we know in real life people do not change their personalities so drastically as they become adults.

Who was the actor playing the minister he looked familiar and I've seen him in minor roles on other soap operas mainly in short term stints but could never find out his name.

do any of you remember if LISA ever pushed her mother over in a wheelchair? i remember this scene in my mind, as a child i remember seeing this happen while they were either trapped in a cabin, or lodge, and there was this circular fire place in the center of the room. i think LISA was in an argument with her mother, or she got mad at her, and in a rage, she pushed her over. i was about 3 or 4 years old, and i still remember this. did this happen, or am i crazy.

I don't have any knowledge of any sort of incident like that. Lisa's mom's last on screen appearance was early 1979, and she was never in a wheel chair that I know of. Lisa mentioned her most likely being able to attend the wedding at the Willows, but she did not

Why do sources like imdb list Suzanne as only being there for the 1979-'80 season. I thought she began playing Betsy in 1972.

This is so funny but Kim and. Ellen should be very close in age, yet she's now Ellen's daughter in law, My mother watched this show and other's and always fou d it strange how the characters can age and really not disrupt the fabric of the serial.

They aged up Dan so quickly it does make Ellen far older than she should be. I've read that one of the actors who played Dan was older than the actress who played Ellen!

Just to clarify in the original Frosty the Snowman a voice actress named June Foray voiced Karen and Suzanne voiced her in later airings.

@@cluvsonj i know all about that. In fact one you tuber recreated the original version by syncing up his copy of the special with the soundtrack album that came with it. June's version of Karen sounds very much like Cindy Lou Who or the little girl in the Captain Crunch commercials

@@cluvsonj ALSO.. some of June's original voice remains in the "Suzanne" version like when Karen is sobbing hysterically over melted Frosty, and when the kids are running outside after school let's out.

I guess I never saw your replies to me but at the time I left that message I just wanted to clarify that for those who read your comment that may not know that for June's version sounds very odd compared to Suzanne's lol and your comparisoin to the girl in the Captain Crunch commercials seems to fit that.

@@cluvsonj With all respects to June Foray(rest her soul), and her astounding voice talent, I agree that Suzanne was the better Karen. One female you tuber, had a daughter who only knew the Suzanne Version, as a little girl. When she got to be a preteen, her mother showed her the original June Foray version, presumedly from the upload, of it, her daughter thought Karen sounded like an old Granny woman!

I know Susan was written out in '79, but I'm not sure if she was already gone before Dan died.

Susan and Emily left for Seattle in late 1978. They were not brought back for the funeral and did not return till 1986

They wiped out a lot of vets in 1979. Susan and Emily were in the cast well into 1979, perhaps spring or summer. (She took Betsy and Emmy to see the Nutcracker around Xmas '78.) I remember Susan crashing Val and Alex's party at the farm house to cause trouble for Kim and Dan, whom she had seduced and tried to win back from Kim. Grant talked Susan into leaving. Sbout that time, they also wrote out the old judge, Joyce Hughes, Alma Miller, Sandy Hughes and then Dr. Dan Stewart. Sandy's hub Kevin Thompson was killed off in a car crash (a default way of death on this show) but he had been on for only 3 years.

@@LCM2248 I found it odd that Emily at least would not have been brought back for her own father's funeral. That just makes no sense to me. If they could not get the same actors to play the roles they could have found some for this one episode.
