The Kwon Bop section of the muyidobotongji isnt korean style its a one to one copy of Qi Giguangs fist section of the ming dynasty military text that was copied b the korean military..........Literally ALL the pictures of that section is the same form and can be seen online/google. As the Imjin War dragged on for years, Korea needed a way to effectively and efficiently train a large number of troops, and the Korean military adopted a training methodology based on a Ming dynasty Chinese military manual called the Jixiao Xinshu (Hangul: 기효신서, Hanja: 紀效新書), written by the famed Chinese general, Qi Jiguang (戚继光). The book was of particular interest to Koreans, as it was written by a Chinese commander who had successfully defeated a major Japanese pirate force that had landed along the Southeast coast of China mere decades before the Imjin War began. Korean officials created their own version of the military training manual, based on the Chinese version, and called it the Muyejebo. In 1759, the book was once again revised and published as the Muyesinbo (Hangul: 무예신보, Hanja: 武藝新譜). Both books, the Muyejebo and the Muyesinbo, formed the basis for the compilation of another, more famous Korean martial arts manual called the Muyedobotongji (Hangul: 무예도보통지, Hanja: 武藝圖譜通志), which was published in 1791. literally the same form..... www.bing.com/images/search?q=jixiao+xinshu+qi+qiguang+32+fist&FORM=HDRSC3

Well stated and well researched. Hwang Kee studied this document though he never had formal training. Given the time period and the available resources in Korea, I believe what he created is quite remarkable, though not historically accurate. It is important to note that the MYDBTJ is a manuscript of enemy tactics, empty hand, weapons, and horsemanship. You can see the MYDBTJ influence in the Moo Duk Kwan’s yuk ro, ship dan khum, and hwa sun forms. Thank you for your insights and links. I have never seen that particular form before from China.

This is a beautiful lineage of Tang Soo Do. I practice American Tang Soo Do, with our history beginning with Chuck Norris. Our version is less traditional and movements are less crisp and snappy but faster as well. I appreciate this variant of the art. Just beautiful. I do have a 1st dan in a more traditional Tang Soo Do and although beautiful I don’t practice it anymore as I teach the American version only. Thanks for sharing this history and very creative backgrounds to watch these practitioners express themselves.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Looks like we are related by lineage. Our lineage can also be traced back to Mr. Norris and his instructor Shin Jae Chul who was taught by Oh Sae Jung who was a direct student of the founder Hwang Kee. You can read about our shared lineage here: wasatchmartialarts.com/2011/12/10/our-ryu-pa/

@@DigitalDojang ahh yes sir. So even within the realm of Mr Chuck Norris however there are many variants. This is because Mr. Chuck Norris begin calling his art something different and it has taken on multiple names over the years and even though it is still American Tang Soo Do, the more common names are as you know I’m sure Chun Kuk Do and beginning in 2015 Chuck Norris System. My certificate actually says 4th degree black belt in “Chuck Norris System - American Tang Soo Do”! When I do tends to be more traditional than most who practice the Chuck Norris System because in essence I do the older system so I commonly referred to what I do and what I teach as American Tang Soo Do. My instructor is current UFAF member but I am not, so it’s more fitting to use the original name to me. What you are teaching is much more like my first-degree black belt in the more traditional variety. It’s always been very beautiful to me. Thanks for sharing.

@@instructorlex8273 Interesting sir. I haven't heard all of the modern history. My training definitely stays true to the founder Hwang Kee and his successor H.C. Hwang. A lot of respect for Mr. Norris, however. Great fighter and practitioner. Grateful that he was able to be one of the pioneers to bring the Art to the USA.

Hmm interesting...(6:54 mins), thus far no mention of Won Kuk Lee - founder of Tang Soo - Do Chung Do Kwan in 1944 and credited as the first Korean national to open a school in Korea; also said to be a student of Gichin Funakoshi of Okinawa/Japan. Some researchers suggest that he (Hwang Kee) also studied under Won Kuk Lee. So it seems he was influenced by more than just books on Okinawan karate.

Yes, this video is the origin story of Moo Duk Kwan, one of the 5 original Kwans. Chung Do Kwan is also one of the 5 original Kwans and it would be great to have a video out there that highlights its history as well. Hwang Kee's "History of the Moo Duk Kwan" book says he learned Okinawan Karate from books as cited in the video clip. This has been confirmed by the founder's closest students. Won Kuk Lee and the other Kwan founders often trained together and it's reasonable to think they shared ideas. Thank you for bringing in the the historical context of there being 5 original Kwans.

It has only been the last few years that Tang Soo Do practitioners have added the Japanese lineage. When I started in 1969 we were basically practicing a Koreanized form of Shotokan. We did the same forms. Same 1 step, 3 step patterns. We even had diagrams of the Pinan forms to use as reference to the forms we practiced. The Koreans basically hated the Japanese. Who can blame them after all the years of brutal Japanese occupation. So they made up elaborate stories of where Tang Soo Do came from. We watched it change over the years. When we first learned the front, side, round, back, and back spinning kicks. The jumping versions and that was it. Later the more elaborate kicks came. It is said that Hwang Kee went to Manchuria and studied Chinese arts there. But Japan also controlled Manchuria at that time. If he learned some Chinese arts it had to be in secret. Later on the Seven Star forms were added to separate it more from Japanese Karate. The story we were told was the Hwang Kee got the forms in a dream. As the years went by Tang Soo Do did become softer in execution. With the changes it began to become a Korean version of Shotokan plus. Of course Shotokan was taken from the Okinawans and changed to introduce it in the school system in Japan. Here now we have taken it and added elements of other arts to make it truly an American form of a Korean art, that came from Japan, from Okinawa, which came from China.
