I’m stepping up to Logic… MUCH DIFFERENT than GarageBand iOS! So having a great music teacher I trust like you would be a great resource!😀

Hi Dan, would love to see how you like to record a rock or grunge track from start to finish (recording, mixing and mastering) in Logic Pro X. Using the built in drummer and built in guitar amps and plugins. I just know you would throw new light on the best way to get radio ready mixes etc. using the tools already in Logic.

Great info. I'm using a Motu 828es, I am going to use your steps to run the audio signal to my Mackie profx12 mixer. The ability to use my faders to mix a project in logic is ideal. Thanks for the great info.

For those who haven't banged their head when using external synths with Logic, the reason this feature is cool is because... It used to be when recording external midi instruments (before this feature), you'd want to send the synth's audio outputs to an aux track, output that to a bus, and have an audio track get its input from the bus. The reason for that was Logic would apply audio latency compensation if you just recorded your synth directly into an audio track. Because there was no delay on the midi being sent, after the audio compensation Logic made, your hardware synth's audio would end up playing early. By recording into an aux track and outputting to a bus, Logic would not apply that latency compensation and your audio would appear as it should (which will probably be a single millisecond delay up to 20 depending on the Midi response of your external instrument). This was a serious pain-in-the-ass to figure out, was not at all intuitive, and tripped up a lot of people ( copy/paste from user "carbon" on gear space)

Great video Dan. I'v been using logic for over 10 years at least (cubase and nuendo before) and there is a problem that I can't ever figure out. what I hear through the monitors is not what is recorded. I don't have a mixing desk, and maybe that's the problem. I would have to get a very large one for the synths and drum machines I have plugged in. but I NEVER get a good sound out of the recordings. nnnneeeevver. and I've been wasting 10,000 of my life . I see you using that soft mixer with your interface. and I think that's my problem . any ideas.

Hi Dan: I'm recording electric guitar into my Audient ID4 Guitar input and use Logic Pro X. I notice that even when my GAIN is turned completely OFF on the ID4 I still see plenty of 'movement' in the track meter which seem odd to me. I would think that when the gain is OFF there would be no signal and therefore no movement in the track meter. When I dial up the gain in the ID4 I then see that I can make the signal hotter as the meter goes even higher, but the truth is that the signal is already nearly high enough even with the gain turned OFF. My question is this: Should the guitar track's meter show movement when playing guitar even if the interface gain is turned to zero or is there still enough signal getting through because OFF is not really OFF. I worry that it might be something else... like some audio routing issue but I cannot find any such issue. Can you comment on this?

Why are you getting such big RTL figures from a 32 buffer size? Shouldn't it be sub 5ms?
@chessward4832

What would be helpful is a video to talk about when to use each buffer size. Obviously Logic provides multiple choices for a reason, so when is it best to use high vs. low, vs. in between? Also, does choice of buffer size in any way affect the overall recording audio quality? Many thanks for your reply. 🙏🏻

The buffer size doesn’t affect audio quality, but the settings are given to accommodate differing capabilities of the computer. One should aim for the smallest buffer size possible as this decreases latency, the trade-off being that there is more strain on porocessing power. Too small a size, and the audio glitches and drops out, sometimes completely.

it's not alright, your guitar recording is early. you will have to push it back a little to have it exactly where you played ( you'll NEVER know exactly where unless you import the audio from this video and place the guitar recording to the point it phases and do the same for the drums). Logic is rubbish.
