Drawing With Any Camera Lens / Cone Of Vision Set Up - Advanced Perspective 03
In this episode of my advanced perspective drawing series I will show you how to set up a drawing using any lens of your choice. We will learn about the 'cone of vision' and the other principles involved.

Hi all, this is a re-upload of an earlier episode - I had to correct a small mistake which would’ve annoyed me if I had left the original version up

I just watched someone try to explain how to draw a dragon in perspective WITHOUT actually explaining perspective or how it applies in drawing! It hurt to try and watch. Thank you, Dan. I can honestly say that your videos are well worth the patreon pledge every month. Cheers 🇦🇺

this is so goooooood, thank you!! i'm not even done, but when you explained 3-point perspective as the station point raised over an object and looking down (line of sight downwards) aaaaa i can feel stuff clicking in my brain

Awesome! Excellent tutorial! Just a small comment: you have explained how to find the vanishing point of the diagonals of the horizontal faces of the cube. I think it is important determine the vanishing points of the diagonals of the vertical faces to establish the exact heights of the vertical edges. It is a simple method. Thank you for your work.

I think I might not have understood something. I can see how a 60 degree cone of vision equates to 30 plus 30 either side of the sight line in a top down view of the set up, but what I am struggling to wrap my head around is how this angle itself isn't affected by the same perspective you are trying to set up. By this I mean, isn't the angle basically the top down view, projected onto the ground plane, and wouldn't this angle change depending on how far above or below the ground plan the camera is? If the camera is place directly on the ground plane, this would be a straight line, so surely it would always be some angle between 180 and 60 depending on how far above the ground plane the camera is?

Great vid! ......only, i didn't understand about the diagonal vanishing point! Because your opposite corner didn't quite match up with it. Perhaps i'm misunderstanding though.

The diagonal vanishing point isn't the same as your center of vision, unless you're working with a cube whose sides converge to the 45 degree VP's and subsequently its diagonal converges to your center point, hopefully what I said makes sense to you. This would basically be like a perfectly symmetrical 2 point grid. The box he drew in that instance had tited VP's so to find the diagonal he measured with his protractor a 45 degree angle from the station point, like he for example did to find to 60 (30 + 30) degree angle.

So the TLDR is: 12:18 (Red Line = Circle - Blue Line = Triangle - Green Line = idk. Red Line = Canvas - Blue Line = Focal Length (How Warp its gonna Look) - Green Line = idk 5:10Blue line = the Wider the Angle, More Bigger the Focal Length is,... Red Line - The Bigger it is, The less Distortion it inserts... Green Line - Tells you the Distance of the Camera... Remember to keep the Blue line always a Square Meaning it should Equal to 90 Degrees total...
