The 768-foot ship John G. Munson departed under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN. The captain of the Munson blasted a long single warning/danger horn as it rounded the turn heading towards the Duluth Ship Canal. This was due to a small boat entering the canal as this larger ship was approaching, so it must have made the Munson's captain nervous? You can actually hear people on the north pier yelling for the small boat to get moving.

Hey, Mike! The MUNSON was built by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co in 1951-52. My grandfather was a riveter at MSB from 1915-1959, and drove a lot of rivets on the MUNSON. He told me she was always his favorite. A lot of beautiful Lakers were built by MSB, the ADAM E. CORNELIUS, JOHN J. BOLAND (2), DETROIT EDISON, and EDWARD L. RYERSON. Quite an impressive list of boats. And it's an engine room gangway!

James, that’s absolutely amazing! I’ll think about your grandfather next time I see this vessel. What an unbelievable connection to have. It means something much more significant when you see her go by. Your grandfather was a hard worker and his colleagues did a great job, take a look at that ship still sailing strong!👍👋⛴️ I’m pinning this to the top of the comment section because it’s such a great comment and connection to this vessel!

@@vibewithmike Thank you very much, Mike, that means very much to me. My grandpa and I were very close, he taught me a lot about the boats, and it's a passion I carry to this very day. His finest moment in time, though, besides riveting on dozens of Lakers, was the fact that he drove rivets on every one of the 28 submarines built in Manitowoc during WW 2. He retired just as the keel of the ADAM E. CORNELIUS (2) was being laid. Reason? She was to be welded together, not riveted!

@evecalvert1350 There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

Mike, I know I've said this before....and will more into the future.......but this was one of my favorite videos you've done. A lot of action. Started right off with one prolonged blast which is a warning signal (for example, used when coming around a blind bend). Better to warn, than have potential issues. And the horn of the Munson sounds so awesome. Deep. Not like a railroad horn, but a laker horn! And if I had one last vessel to watch, it would be the Munson. Classic lines, so very well proportioned. Even the self unloading boom looks good. Doesn't take away from the lines. Great pilot house. So well maintained. All in all....a real beauty Mike. Thanks for making this video. I loved watching it.

This means a lot to me and it’s actually a huge part of this channel. When I started doing these videos I wanted to make sure there was never any controversial content and it had everything to do with building a community of friends and basing that off of our love for the ships. I promise I will always provide fun and new things to watch with the ships, but I’ll always keep it Positive so we can get away from whatever during that video. And hopefully, it makes a person feel better after.

FYI - A single horn blast to another boat is a signal that they plan to meet each other on the port side. Two blasts is they plan to meet on the starboard side. If they want to sound a warning, they give five or more short blasts.

@vibewithmike 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info! After doing more research it appears a longer single horn blast means “Entering or exiting a blind turn.” www.boaterexam.com/navigationrules/sounding-off/ That’s what was happening in this video. Thank Mike! It’s been a while since I’ve been in Duluth, but I hope to return again soon. You’re right about the meaning of one prolonged blast. Listening carefully to that horn blast again, I actually suspect it was a one long, two short captain’s salute… but the echo kind of blended blasts together at your vantage point. Perhaps she was meeting the Vista Star in the harbor. It’s hard to be certain, as her horn has a fluctuating tone to it. Regardless, the Munson was definitely generous with her horn on this visit.

Really sorry that you guys are still dealing with all of the smoke from Canada there, Mike. We have experienced the same thing from fires coming from south of the border here in Texas before. It really does create an unusual and undesirable view to the atmosphere. That was cool in your initial video showing what looks like a “beach” to the left of the bridge there. I did not realize that was there. So many of those “Laker” ships have what is very similar to a U.S. Coast Guard livery, although in different colors on their bows with that slanted stripe. Again, just excellent narration and history on the ships and surroundings that you provide. No one else that I have seen provides this. Maybe they do, but I have not seen their videos yet. Cheers, from Texas to. you Mike.

@@vibewithmike I got to thinking about it after watching and I'd bet the Captain picked up that small boat on radar and, knowing the 'rules' about the raised bridge signaling a LARGE vessel is outbound, decided to sound that long horn blast. It can be really scary for a captain of a big ship, preparing for that turn under the Lift Bridge. That’s not easy to do. Heck, I’m in a pontoon and it’s not always easy. I have a lot of respect for the captains on those big ships.

@@vibewithmike Well...that's a blind turn coming out of port with lots of visual interferences. Even having bridge/helm station forward doesn't make the Captain's job any easier leaving that port exit. I'd love to take one trip under the bridge and through the channel in a 1000 footer with the bridge/helm station on the stern just to watch how the Captain executes that turn! Cheers...

I think this could be a fun perspective; if you drew a line from the center of the canal into the harbor and found a safe spot (in your boat?) for your camera, I think it would be fun to watch the 1000 footers make that graceful turn into the center of the canal. I am fascinated with the skill needed to steer such a long ship into such a narrow lane.

@@vibewithmike In my younger days, in order to pass my truck driver training, I had to parallel park a tractor with a 50' trailer into a parking spot in only one continuous move. All 5 curbside tires had to be inside of 12" of the curb; touching the curb with any of the tires was a failure. When I watch these massive ships with their massive tonnage moving at a continuous controlled speed, I truly appreciate the precision required to not over or understeer. These guys are SO good!

The munson is a beautiful ship with classic great lakes bulk carrier lines. How long is the trip from Duluth to Cary, Indiana? How long is the round trip? We have investigated boat and ship trips. There is a supply ship in Polynesia where you can book passage on this supply ship traveling the islands as a passenger as it supplies other boats in the fleet for over 1 or 2 weeks. It is much different than a cruse ship. You are on a working vessel.

The reason that the lake ships look lower is their molded depth is shorter (deck to keel) than the ocean ships. So when they are allowed to load to full mid summer draft there is usually only 10-15 feet of free board. Also the ports on the lakes are generally shallower than the ocean ports and are ultimately constricted by the depth at the locks, Sault and Welland Canal. Most of the ocean going ships are partially loaded.

You are welcome. As far as the crew size I can only imagine how small they have gotten since I got out of the game. The USCG says, 3 first class pilots, 3 licensed engineers (one must have a chief's ticket) 3 ABS (able bodied seamen) then probably three, deckhands / conveyormen although one may be required to have a QMED ticket (qualified member of Engineering Department) No stewards, no porters, no wheelsmen,. no oilers, no wipers. Sure cuts down on the size f the life boats and grocery bill, and everybody gets their own room. Heat and serve meals, no thanks. All this to compete with the tug-barge lash ups.

Why do they blow the horn ?
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 11 ай бұрын
There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth.
