Sub70 699 clubs are amazing. In fact if you're anywhere beetween a 9-23 handicap, I'd suggest you try the 699 Pro! They're easy to launch, and give masses of feedback too. And they look lovely at address. I'm a convert for sure.

I had the luxury of having 5 irons available to choose from and it was a lengthy process between the final 2. T200 & Apex Pro. I went in open minded and price was not an issue as my last clubs were 20 odd years old (Callaway X14s) and still going strong but felt I had outgrown them and playing a lot more golf again. Well, for me it came down to feel and top edge of the club and Calloway Apex Pro now in the bag. I must say the fitting and shaft weight etc was an eye opener and seeing the different results has madev getting a new set an easy enjoyable experience. All of the clubs I tried were good and don’t know how we got fitted in the old days!

So many choices & I have been fortunate enough to have a combo set of T150/T200 - my concern is that for a lot of people, the price point of most of these clubs will be out of reach for a vast majority of people, although the Sub 70 looks a bargain compared to the others!

Nice round-up, Dan! Wow. The numbers on the Apex are really good. The spin consistency is insane! I mean, a lot of that is the guy swinging the club :) but still...less than 300 rpm difference from lowest to highest - that's good. Very steady in carry and ball speed, too. I like a little stronger 7-iron - closer to 31º - so I wonder if they're easy to bend.

Its an interesting review. I think fitting is key and an open mind. To an extent anyway. I got fitted this year and went in expecting to go srixon. Thought it would be zx5 for 4,5,6 and zx7 for the rest. Ended up with zx7 4-8 and the z-forged 9 and w. I actually think the shaft was the key in the whole process. Lighter and stiffer than dynamin gold r300's and a little longer has regained me 8-10 yds. Fitting overall has so improved my ball stricking and accuracy.

Zx7’s for me are awesome - nearly got them last month in a combo with Zx5’s - they looked better than the 5s in short irons but 5-8 yards vs 300 revs I just couldn’t give up so got zx5 through the bag - I’m a 12hcp never been lower I have 98 club 130 ball 5200 spin 195carry with a six iron - so the xtra forgiveness hitting all over the face with my speed. I've done a lot of testing on sim's / launch monitors as well for various irons and I have to say for myself, my sweet spot seems to be 34° (7 iron) with DG S300 shafts, they keep me in the 6800~7200rpm spin range and 19°~21° launch window. Currently bagging Wilson Staff Model CB/Blades combo, but backup irons are Srixon ZX7 MKII with lighter weight shafts.. stronger lofts of the ZX7's with lighter weight shafts just about equal out to the DG S300 130g shaft setup in the Wilsons. I've tried all on your list, except the APEX Pro's.

I’m looking to buy a new set of irons and your heading caught my eye. I recently went for a custom fitting and made it clear that I did not have any preconceived ideas regarding brand or shaft stiffness. Of the irons I tried the trackman data showed I did best with the Callaway Apex Pro and Mizuno Pro 225. Based on the data I was told the Mizuno suited me better because it was higher spinning with a tighter dispersion although I was 4 yards longer with the Callaway.

I have tested 3 different irons over the last month before I lay down $1800 ( CAD) . The Apex 21, the P790 and the T200. All three feel great and look fantastic , The only issue I had with one of these clubs is the spin rate, The T200 7 iron for some reason would come out like a knuckleball with very low spin even though all my other numbers ( with my swing) were normal, The one I got along with the best was the P790 even though as a long time Callaway user it pains me to say but for me it outperformed the Apex 21's slightly. Maybe this will be a TM Christmas this year. Another solid video by DHG, Good job all.

Had the i230s which I really liked. Issue for me was my lower swing speed so wasn't getting the distance I need for the courses I play. Tested a few of the others and went with the T200. Liked the feel and it was easier to hit. More shiny than I like but guess I'll get used to that. One thing worth noting on the T200 is the loft changes as you go up in club which will affect your gapping (to wedges) if you come from more traditional irons like my old i230 clubs.

Hey Dan, awesome video. I might be a little biased being a Ping player, currently playing the i210 irons 3-U. Also disadvantaged being a Left Handed golfer, Ping is great, giving everything in their range in both hands. I have hit the i230, minimal difference between the 2 generations of clubs.

I played the 230’s last year and the new Titleist 150 and 200 combo set blows them away. It’s surprising because the Titleist heads are more compact, but forgiveness level isn’t there with the 230’s since you’re specifically talking about mid handicaps.

I'm hoping that the top set is the Sub70 Gen 2 699 Pros. I am currently on 15.5 and play the original 699s; they're powerful and forgiving without being crazy long. On top of liking the clubs, I really like the company. EDIT: The description says 699 Pro, but you showed the 699, which has a little more offset and slightly larger head... the Pro version is more of a players' distance iron.

Yes, this was a bit confusing. The static picture showed the "regular" 699. However, if you look closely at the video (around 8:38), you can see the "Pro" marking on the club he is holding (and subsequently hit). I believe the data shown is for the Pro version.

Thanks for the video Dan, with respect, I don't think the clubs you have chosen are 'mid-handicapper' clubs. Rather they are more suited to single figure golfers, especially those who are decent ball strikers. In my world golfers are looking for distance, control, aesthetics and price. No golfer I play with would want to lose distance buying a new set of clubs. I play with JPX919s lovely clubs, but my next set will be more distance focused...Amen.

@DanHendriksenGolf Күн бұрын
All these game improvement irons are designed to be high launch low spin for distance. You'll be using a steeper descent angle for control rather than higher spin which is what you would see in your traditional blade type irons. I would say that with each iteration of irons, the forgiveness increases across the face but saving a few quid and going down the route of ltdx or Aerojet is still definitely worth it.

@DanHendriksenGolf
@DanHendriksenGolf 9 ай бұрын
Hi Joe, when it comes to forgiveness it is just really hard to test for this, however if you are good at hitting the club in different spots on the face you could get some feedback with a number of shots. Dispersion front to back comes down to spin which in turn comes down to loft, the more loft you have the more spin (general rule) as for left to right misses, this is down to the individual and what they deliver at impact, but shaft can 100% effect this. Do these clubs beat each other? I would look at loft, spin and shaft fitting. Hope this helps

Quick bit of feedback… mid handicap is pretty ambiguous and golfers are arrogant! Met someone on a 25 handicap, talking about being a mid-handicapper (because it goes up to 50-something). Anyway, definitely helps the audience if you quantify the range that you have in mind 👍
