Right, problem is Max is also a fighter... it turns out, DC has no say in this because he said himself he’s never felt like quitting, he always just was ready to get back out win or lose... Which means every fighter doesn’t have the same mentality or morals principles or whatever u wanna call it. DC knows the game and has great "humanity". Just a solid guy. That said, exhaustion in a fight is terrifying. When you have nothing left, even when you dig, your just gonna get a beating. Ya, he saw everything his fighter did to prep on 5 days notice and cut weight, the years of training, etc. Especially since he has been there himself. He owes it to his fighter to take that minute before making a decision. I just wish there was a way the hecould have made the call without the world knowing that Max was tossing it in himself. Not because I think any less of him, but because of how Dana White, other fighters and many fans will. Given he took the challenge on 5 days and prob had next to nothing in the tank going in, I'd hope he'd have another shot. Dana gave mixed messages on it, he basically said right after the fight that the kid gave up so no, but then he also made comments in the post fight presser saying anyone that judges this kid, who took the short notice and stepped in there, should keep their mouths shut. DC saying that calling it shouldnt really be one the table for a fighter is true too(at least at the highest lv like the ufc). I understand that he wanted out and was getting beat up and was exhausted but there are probably 100 ufc fights where the fighter is more tired and/more beat up than Max was and yet they continued to fight. You would hope that people getting into mma have the mindset and mental toughness to stick out the hard fights. This fight also showed that Max seems to not have been tested in his training

health actually comes last when it comes to fighting. fighters know what theyre getting into before they fight. fighters know what comes with fighting and we still do it despite losing some health on the way. just a different mindset. exhuasation just means you didn't train. if you walk into any boxing gyms youll see a poster or sign saying something like exhaustion is temporary, exhuasation makes cowards out of people, or being tired means youre not training correctly, how many times do you see boxers at the highest level being exhausted.

Ultimately that's what happens when the sport is consumed by the masses. What did you expect? 95% of the people watching and paying have no training, and ultimately they are the fans that decide the narrative on the sport.

It's situational. You don't have to be a fighter to see that kid was mentally defeated. It would've been way too dangerous to send him out there to take more punishment and remember he was brand new. You want to make a career out of this you might want to play the long game and avoid taking Unnecessary damage.

It's not a skills issue it's a listening issue. Navy seal applicants can quit whenever they want at BUDS and when they do, that's that and no one is there to force you through tough times. You do it yourself when you can.

Not all the best coaches are particularly good ex-fighters in most sports. Best football managers in the world were often quite bad ex-players. Same with MMA coaches a lot of the time.

Max didn't want to fight anymore and that is totally unacceptable in the middle of competition. Don't matter how short his notice was or the weight cut, you don't quit on a stool and then stick around to watch your opponent get his hands raised. The coach tried to save him by trying to push him beyond that mental barrier in his head. Max needed to be the one that quit himself and own the decision. No coach should bail out a quitter. It doesn't protect them in the future because it could easily happen again since they never had to deal with the shame. Max needed to face this demon on his own and confront it. Hopefully, he will be able to redeem himself and learn from it.

I don’t get why everyone thinks he has to call it before the bell rings for the next round. Give your fighter every opportunity to dig deep. If the ref says it’s time for the next round and the fighter still says no then call it. I would’ve waited and let him rest til last second, then called it if he still was too exhausted. Calling it at 40 seconds doesn’t protect the fighter any more than calling it at 60 seconds.

You can, I remember my first 1000m swim, I was a young kid & wanted to give in so bad, really had enough. The coach wouldn't let me, she kept taking my hands off the side & directing me to do another length. I never quit when the going got tough in that sport ever again, not even in training. Until I got tired of the people in the sport & walked away.

Same reason they won't be world champions. It's kind of a double-edge sword but I understand what you're saying. Digging deep is in ever single sport if anything you gotta dig more deep in MMA with the grueling weight cut and horrfic injuries the fighter have to endure.

It’s usually the coaches’ job to motivate the fighter between rounds and push him beyond his limits. Although it is a tricky situation especially in a sport like this where losing means getting beat up and getting hurt. But I have seen fighters who came back after getting beat up and won the fight. And the coaches do know the fighters better than any of us do.

Dig deep is what fighting is about literally, if not you die in actual combat. That being said, if he chose to call his own death and way out give it to him. Quitters quit, winners win and not everyone will go out out on their shield. Find another sport, no shame in testing yourself.

That should've been all the coach needed to hear to throw the towel in. If his fighter's words weren't proof enough, then the fact that he was too exhausted to even lift his hands to keep from getting hit should've sufficed.
