Nirvana released three studio albums: Bleach (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Chad Channing, Dale Crover, Jack Endino), Nevermind (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Butch Vig) & In Utero (Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Steve Albini, Scott Litt), as well several live albums such as MTV Unplugged, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, Live at Reading, and a compilation album, Incesticide. Kurt Cobain was the driving force behind Nirvana, his songwriting propelling the band to great heights. In this video I look at how Nirvana made Bleach & the history behind every song on the album.

Daniel, love your videos, but I hope you'll allow me to clarify that "Drop C" story. It's impossible to unknowingly go from drop D to drop C. The process of going from standard tuning to Drop D tuning is simple, lowering the tuning of the 6th string (E) by a whole step to match the 4th string (D) in pitch an octave lower. However drop C involves first going to drop D as I just described, followed by dropping ALL SIX STRINGS an additional whole step. It's impossible for it to have been an accident in other words.

@@DanielSarkissian I would like to hear your take on Kurt Kobains "I hate myself & I want to die" one day. u remind me of my collegemates, it was the year Kurt died. we would smoke copious amt of weed & cheap booze every night & headbang to whatever until our necks sore then discuss every song and every album , trying to figure out why he died when rock stars drop like flies then. it was the era of long hair, hazy dorm rooms, larva lamps and u can hear rock music 24/7 when u walk down any corridor at the dorm. the coolest thing about it was, it wasn't in the USA or Europe. the 90s was truly an awesome era. heheh

Bleach is such an incredible album. I used to listen to it while biking to work through the harsh winter. It got me through the cold... especially Sifting. What an amazing album.

Not really. Bleach I feel is quintessential GRUNGE. In Utero has more of a noise-rock influence, up against the pretty melodic stuff (which isn’t all that Nevermindish either to me). Nirvana had a very diverse discography.

I really screwed up, they came to my town right after Nevermind came out, just before they blew up. I missed a chance to see them at a small club for $6, not long after they returned to a larger venue in the area, missed ‘em again. My wife was at both shows and said they blew the house down. Big regret.

@@bulletproofzest I caught them in St Louis right after Nevermind came out. Absolutely the best show I've ever seen. I'm a jaded musician, so my bassist had to drag me there. I said "that's the best show I ever saw... and I THINK that's my favorite band!"... lol... like it was a huge surprise.

What I think is really cool about swap meet is the way the riff st the start turns inside out. Kurt cleverly starts the riff part way through on an off beat and when the drums and vocals start the riff appears to turn inside out, a clever musical trick!

Agreed, it's not my favourite song because I'm not a big fan of the verses but that opening riff that gets turned inside out when the drums kick in and then he sings seemngly halfway through a bar.....very smart and unusual for Kurt, I don't think there's another Nirvana song that does anything like this

My teenager son, 13 yrs old, has discovered Nirvana on YT recently and shown me videos he found. Me, as a fan of Nirvana since my teen age till now, was amazed. In 90-s I was just a schoolboy in Ukraine countryside, far from U.S., but we LOVED Kurt and often surprised local dance parties by including a couple of Nirvana tracks when nobody was really asking for it. We just needed it. Nirvana lyrics was part of my autodidact English study, actually. Now, through videos like this, I can reveal more meaning from the same songs. Keep up your work, @Danier, it's priceless!

I absolutely loved this. Nirvana have been my favourite thing in the world since I was 13- Im 40 now. I still have my cassette copy of Bleach that my friend taped for me in 1993. This is a fecking brilliant brilliant overview and analysis of the album. Bleach is often overshadowed by the other albums. This is a wonderfully made, attentive and richly detailed film that gives the album a well deserved spotlight. I loved all the research and detail gone into every song. Dates, times, and all the fascinating background into the different recordings, and stories from the studio and sources to the band. Incredible video. Fantastic. Watching this video in the midst of lockdown,and completely forgetting about the outside world, lost in the stores here behind the music.

I could be wrong, but I think Drain You was Kurt's favorite. I'm not sure which song off of Bleach was his favorite, but I remember him being really proud about writing Drain You.

Im pretty sure the only thing that could even be argued as something other than a timeless chord progression thats impossible to pen an originator to like Teen Spirit and In Bloom, is Come As You Are, which was admittedly by Cobain in the official bio that it came from a song called "The Eighties". But we all know that. Surely you mean stolen as they stole verse to chorus to verse movements identically or stole whole passages of lyrics right? Cause "stolen" does mean to knowingly take something of someone else's property right? I don't remember that happening but I'd love to be enlightened if you wanna chat about it.

I really love this album. It has been a huge inspiration for me ever since I first heard it in early 1993. The reason it has been such a huge inspiration was because it had an actual number in the booklet of how much it cost to record it and it seemed pretty cheap at the time. At the same time the sound on the album was anything but cheap. It wasn't as well refined & perfected as Nevermind, but it sounded really good. I've always thought "If they could do it, so can I". In 1993 I had just started to play and learn guitar and I wanted to put my first band together and in 1994 I joined my first band....It has been a long road, but I kept pushing for my whole life and in 2010 I built my own studio and producing music is my favorite thing in the world.

There is a huge amount of information here. Great job putting this all together. I was hoping Paw would have gotten mentioned for their cover of “School”. Saw them perform it shortly after Kurt’s death and it was a pretty surreal moment. They were such an underrated band of the time.

I think the trouble with Kurt is, he understood the world too well and he took it all in. We got some amazing songs but it clearly absorbed him. Great video, you've put a hell of a lot of work in this! I have subbed!

I'm sure everybody knows this by now, but Nirvana guitarist, Jason Everman went on to play bass in Soundgarden, then become a US Army Special Forces (the 'Green Berets') and serve in Iraq and Afghanistan. To me, his journey is arguably one of the more fascinating stories in Rock and Roll.

I love what youre doing here,covering interesting topics that nobody else has and you REALLY know your Nirvana shit so total respect there. So offer these suggestions as a fan and with love #1 The aggressive drive to win subscribers isn't needed, and in all likelyhood will have th opposite effect,driving people away #2 I think it might confuse people when your narration is talking about,say ,Jack Endino but at that moment you show a closeup of Chad Channing making people think Channing is Endino.I know it's a filmmaking cliche to show a shot of the person you are talking about but it's a help to people who are new to these stories and characters. Keep up the great work

There is no denying that this KZfaqr is a master researcher, who leaves no stone unturned. Every tiny detail has been thoroughly investigated and explored. An impressive amount of work. A comprehensive history. While I am only a minor-league Nirvana fan, even I was impressed and fascinated in the amount of detail in this video. Awesome job!

Hey Daniel, I'm a new subscriber so just want to first say hi and let you know how impressed I am with your approach. Anyway, I got Bleach around the time it was released in Australia (ie: later than US, prob late 89) and have always had a soft spot for it. It's just interesting to me how much this video/doco has shifted my thinking around the album. On the one hand, it has kind of crystallised the album into reality - knowing the thoughts/ambitions/ members that were juggling this band in the early days. Touching, honestly. On the other hand, there's songs like School (poss my fav) that talk about the cliquey Seattle scene and that whole childish need to impress the crowd. I mean, the fact that Love Buzz was a concern to Kurt for that reason just baffles me. Then I started thinking about Nevermind track-by-track and it freaked me out. How much did they change for that album - just threw all that clique neuroses out and just stepped up lyrically? It's astounding how brave Nevermind is - just - full tilt into the layered pop, like he got 10years older in 2 years.

Kurts lyrics weren’t a direct narrative, they were poetry. As such meaning comes from impression and feeling. Not lacking meaning, just different meaning.

Thanks 4 posting! 1st heard Nirvana ‘Love Buzz’ on a “local”(WA) skateboard VHS video called Board Crazy back in 90’. Skate vids often used local bands for tunes. Blew us away - Negative Creep!!! That Bleach album is a BIG 1 for me...Fave!!

Great work on Bleach and In Utero, Daniel. The cherry on the cake would be if you could interview Butch Vig about the recording of "Nevermind". Just tell hime you've interviewed Endino about Bleach and Albini about "In Utero" and his interview is the last piece of the puzzle.

Swap Meet was the second Nirvana song I ever heard. I heard it once and a week later I could still remember the lyrics and melody. I was driving, still singing this song and thought "I should probably pull into this record store and buy a copy of this record". Bought it, listened to it while I drove to band practice 45 minutes away, got there and said "hey, can I borrow a distortion pedal?".

I've watched quite a few episodes of this channel and have found them to be incredibly interesting! It's crazy to hear the interviews from Steve Albini and Mark Lanigan etc. I remember buying the albums and going to the concerts so to hear so much information on another facet of the music that I consider MY soundtrack is mind-blowing!

Sifting is such an epic closing song and arguably intended as such for the definitive version of Bleach (I'm curious as to whether the band members had/have an assertive opinion on this)... I reckon it'd be more respectful to their legacy if future re-releases kept it as the 11 track album and the other 2 songs were included on a compilation album of non-album tracks, similar to The Beatles' Past Masters compilation. Yes, I'm a nerd! Great video, I really enjoyed this and have subscribed.

It's Maida _Vale_ studios, not Valley. It's a legendary BBC studio where most of the John Peel sessions were recorded, plus about a million others. A lot of very big bands got their first real radio play there. The cure, Siouxie And The Banshees, Napalm Death, Nirvana, the list is literally endless.

Hoping this work could lead you to interviews with Krist and Dave as well as Pat, Dale, Chad, and Jason. I think we're all on a first name basis at this point. Great work. Only thing I'd request is to shed more light on Krist and his contributions. Didn't hear much about him in the Endino or Albini interviews.

At first I was apprehensive about yr channel. I had seen another Nirvana/Kurt channel pop up lately and it was pretty lame and misguided so I was just thinking that we didn't really need another YT channel dealing with a band that has been talked about to death. Hey Daniel, can you PLEASE do an in depth video on Alice in Chains too? They have been dissed & passed over by the industry on so many levels, but have an important, lasting legacy of INCREDIBLE music, riffs, and lyrics by Jerry and Layne (especially on "Tripod" where they were basically using their lyrics to "talk" to one another). Would also love a _separate_ storyline on just Jerry and his life. I've spent a lot of time studying all of them, and speculating on how Jerry was forced into a solo career due to circumstances within AIC. You can plainly see his pain and pathos in the lyrics on ALL of his solo stuff, especially Degradation Trip. *You do great work, Daniel.* And I think these 2 other types of documentaries would be a great addition on your part, especially since you are so keen on grunge! 👍🎸❤

I agree 💯 percent!!! Obviously I was a 90's kid so I love all the alternative "grunge " bands......,but I'm particularly intrigued, interested, obsessed, in love with AIC and Nirvana...... I saw AIC for the first time on the 25th of September at Louder than Life in Louisville Kentucky where I live. I wish I could have seen them with Layne and Mike Starr 😔however, I feel incredibly lucky to have seen them at all. William is great with the band and has so much passion and obvious respect when singing their original songs. Anyhow, I feel like I can die happy now that I've seen them play, to see Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney was mindblowing for me!! So, anyhow, yes please 🙏 more on them as well.

To me, Kurt saying he made all the songs up right away and put no meaning in, goes to show how much of a naturally good songwriter he was. He put in meaning and story without even trying. When he actually tried to intentionally put meaning in, we get some of the best albums of all time.
