One of the most profound musical compositions by Chopin. Why this composition has not achieved equivalent fame and categorized with the likes of the 4th Ballade Op. 52 or Fantaisie Op. 49 is beyond me... The harmonic complexity is just as breathtaking. The emotion aroused within is just as powerful. Truly a masterpiece.

I think the F minor Fantaisie is just as overshadowed by the Ballades and Scherzi. But imo both of them are his two greatest compositions, followed by the 3rd Sonata which is ALSO overshadowed, specifically by the funeral march.

You can't seriously think the B flat minor sonata is superior to the B Minor? I hope never to hear the B flat minor ever again, ditto the dreadful B flat minor scherzo.I think that the Polonaise Fantaisie is one of the very finest works, the f minor ballade is comparable, but not much else. Chopin is generally overrated and overplayed for me. The etudes are fabulous, a couple of waltzes, but the Nocturnes with their dreary middle sections you can forget. The first movement of the e minor concerto is beautiful for the piano, but sleep inducing for the orchestra. For me, Chopin was a conceited spoilt popinjay. Nothing like the depth of Schumann or the magnanimity and grandeur of Liszt. The proof also is that there have been many very great pianists who played not one note of Chopin.
@jeremyd1021
@jeremyd1021 6 жыл бұрын
Don't take it from me, take it from the legions of great pianists who never ( or barely) played him....... Let's start with Richter..... a few etudes, the E minor Scherzo, F minor ballade and of course, the Polonaise Fantasie, that's more or less his total interest in Chopin, and those that never did: Schnabel, Brendel ( apart an early recording of the Polonaises) Edwin Fischer, Annie Fisher too, Backhaus ( apart from an early recording of the Etudes) Myra Hess, Clifford Curzon......... I could go on and on. Look, I know why you like him, as have countless millions of others. It's easy on the ear and the heartstrings, popular stuff. The all Chopin piano recital is now thankfully pretty much consigned to the dustbin, but it was once like that. It's the same reason why people like Rachmaninov. Sweet and sugary, easy on the ear , not challenging for the casual listener of classical music. What did Brendel say when asked about Rachmaninov? I think he said that he would not want to overestimate his abilities as a composer....... damning with faint praise. As for the popinjay martinet Chopin, on receiving in the post the first printing of Schumann's Kreislerana, dedicated to him, what did he say about it ....?....."Nice cover"....... even though Chopin could NEVER have composed a work as profound and deep as Schumann's masterpiece. And to say that his late works achieve the profundity of late Beethoven ( or any Beethoven).......I'm sorry, that's just wholly misguided, and wrong.

Chopin's A flat polonaise-fantasy is arguably one of the greatest piano works of the romantic era, and those who have performed it successfully have lived with it for much of their lives, as it is a work built not on structure per se, but on linking the 3 melodic tonal elements using the medient harmonic. Liszt understood this when he said that the Op. 61 was beyond the sphere of art. Rubinstein and Perlemuter understood it in their incredible performances where the lushness of this composition was allowed to breathe freely and float toward one of the most climactic passages in the piano literature. Trifonov has the enviable technique for this, and just about anything else he chooses, and one day his performance of this work will set the highest mark.

Disagree. His playing is shallow and empty. Although Trifonov plays with great technical proficiency there is not ONE note that is uniquely personal or creative or communicative in any way. Avdeeva played with some creativity. She is doing quite well now. Oh! And SHE WON.

Marvelous pinsim, of course, probably the most AGILE, most POWERFUL performance of this work ever recorded, but this interpretation lacks the elegance, the deeply introspective, meditative quality inherent in the work, and much of its majestic grandeur, because of the super intense focus on VIRTUOSITY. As a result, while excellent in many waysthis brilliant interpretation oveshoots the mark when it comes o affect. A truly wonderful pianist who nevertheless has much to learn about the inner meaning of profouundly lyrical works such is this.

He didn't win 1st prize because he's not a rational stable performer.
