What do the visions mean? That's what everyone wants to know, and also "what's up with the Warlocks and the shade trees" more generally. I'll answer all that and more as we dive into one of the if not the most psychedelic chapters in ASOIAF!

YES! YES! YES! It would make no sense from a moral or storytelling standpoint for Dany to get nissa-nissaed by Jon or to go down the evil route! Everything points to Dany and Jon giving their best to create a better world for everyone, no matter the cost to themselves. Him killing her would just be repeating the same atrocities all over again indeed. U nailed it yet again ❤️❤️❤️

Plus the way it was done Jon lures her into a false sense of security and kills her. Then when she talks about how the people don’t get a say which solidifies him killing her, but in the next scene Sam suggests a democracy and they all laugh like Dany was right the people don’t get a say and she got killed for it. I mean the show is mostly meant for those who don’t read the books which is why D&D just decided to make it about a spectacle instead of focusing on story telling and characterization

In the Philippines, my wife's people have the Kapre. It is a tree demon. A man beast that plays tricks on people. It eventually grows to become part of the tree, sometimes leaving a face. I see a lot of obscure Filipino mythology in video games and sometimes throughout A Song of Ice and Fire. David is describing the Others like the Tiyanak. They are spirits of the trees that take on the form of vampire babies before attacking humans. The nuno sa punso ("old man of the mound") is a dwarf-like monster who lives in an anthill or termite mound. Its name directly translates to "Ancestor/Grandparent in the Anthill. It makes me think of old man in trees. Tambal is a monster capable of impersonating human victims, is the Filipino equivalent of the doppelganger. They make their victims go missing for days and then assume their place at home, mixing with relatives and acquaintances. According to legend, the tambal slaughter their victims before assuming their place. The tambal subsequently pretends to die, but the "corpse" it leaves behind turns into tiny white tree with red leaves and vines. Amalanhig are beings from Visayan mythology of my wife's tribe. Amanlanhigs are afraid of deep bodies of water. They are cold dead beings. Bungisngis is a one-eyed giant. It's sole eye is blue. It probably looks akin to the monster at the end of the movie SMILE. It's name means Giggling Giant. Though it eats people who do not offer it sacrifices. Kataw are like Squishers.

I've come across the Kapri when looking for green man art, so I've heard of that one. but not the others, that was a fun crash course! thank you! it's cool how different cultures have their own takes on things like "tree spirits"

@@DavidLightbringer No problem, brother. I was listening to one of your videos on Weirwoods and Euron and Bran one day when I learned about the Tambal. The whole white tree with poison-red leaves sounded all too familiar. Now, I think the story references a real tree up north were the Kalingon live. I think "witch doctors' use these leaves to cause hallucinations, but they are documented as being used to poison Japanese soldiers during WWII. If it's all the same tree. I believe GRRM attempted to replicate the most obscure mythologies he could find from the cultures he has copied from. There is little work done on the Filipino mythologies because they are so vast for a tiny, well not so tiny, 7,000-island country. I think there were 168-172 tribes before the Indian empire invaded in 1,000 AD and broke everything and everyone into caste systems and the Spanish later did their thing. I'll go over to her Grandfathers or the oldest person I can find and record what they tell me because a lot of it is going to die out in a few generations if more young Filipino scholars don't start documenting and writing some books. 90% of what is out there is written by Filipino Americans who have never even set foot in the Philippines. It makes me so sad. I want my daughters to know who their grandparents and great-grandparents are. I don't want papa's small tribe to die out with him and his sisters. I think there is one other family with members in their 70s, and that's it. Even if it's just their words and stories. They get so excited to share with me though when I ask. My father in law can't speak English. We communicate through him showing me how to fish and how to cook the types of fish we catch. Most husbands don't acclimate as much as I have. I've been adopted and married in a cultural ceremony I didn't understand one word of. Something not many Americans get to say they have ever done. Sorry, I get excited to learn, for my girls, mainly. They're just the best thing to happen to me and I want them to grow up knowing a lot.

Thanks for all the shout outs. The Colour Out of Asshai is in the works, just work is slow going as real life work is getting heavy. Anywho, thinking on SotE wine and Tyrion finding wine from Asshai in Illyrio's wine cellar - he ends up choosing a strong purple wine from the Arbor. I've said that mixing SotE and WW paste would get you purple drank and Tyrion ends up going for something akin to that. There are also green wines from the east which makes me think of Absinthe - Absinthe doesn't actually cause hallucinations (Myth of the Green Fairy) unless drunk in copious amounts, and it can be brewed with wormwood or snakewood which make it a lot more potent. SotE wine probably drawing on those aspects of old school Absinthe with wormwood that Bohemian artists were quaffing down by the gallon.
@GreyWasteTim
@GreyWasteTim 6 ай бұрын
Oh yeah and Dany asking if it will turn her lips blue. One drink won't do that. That comes with drinking a lot and/or drinking constantly - a sign that Euron has been drinking a lot since his lips are blue. It takes a lot of Absinthe or very strong Absinthe to trip, usually spiked with something extra like the fermented wormwood. Otherwise it's no more dangerous than any other alcoholic drink.

Mental health conditions cause physical changes in the brain that are observable and measurable. Saying mental health conditions are all in your head is like saying that a heart murmur is all in your heart. Like, okay? I don’t get why we treat afflictions to an organ so drastically differently when it’s the brain compared to any other organ

Here is my interpretation. Three fires must you light: One for life: the funeral pyre that gave life to the dragons. One for death: the fire that burns her enemies and makes her the Kahl of Kahls. One to love = the fire she must light to save humanity and with it those she loves. Three mounts must you ride: One to bed: her silver, which she rode to her wedding night. One to dread: ships. The Dothraki call ships wodden horses, and she will likely have to make an alliance with the Greyjoys to get to Westeros, which will come with a dreadful price, probably through Euron. One to love: She will ride Drogon against the battle of the coming darkness to save those she loves. Three treason's will you know: Disclaimer: I think Dany will commit those acts of treason, just as she must light those three fires and ride the three mounts. She will commit those three betrayals, which will lead her to her destiny. Once for blood: her brother Viserys; she turned her back on him and let Drogo kill him. "You sold me. You betrayed me." No. You were the betrayer. You turned against me, against your own blood." A Dance with Dragons, Daenerys X Once for gold: her current husband, who is said to be rich beyond measure, I think she will turn her back on him and let him be killed by Victorian and use his riches to start her campaign in Westeros and perhaps use the money to bribe the Iron Bank to lay low. Once for love: she will commit a betrayal out of love. This might have something to do with Jon, as he is the blue flower who is in the love section of her visions. She will turn her back on something and come to his rescue to fight the others beyond the wall.

Why Rhaegar looked at Dany standing in doors when he said words "He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire." He looked up when he said it and his eyes met Dany's, "There must be one more," he said, though whether he was speaking to her or the woman in the bed she could not say. "The dragon has three heads." Why he said those words ?

Another great read-through! Had to grin at Dany noticing the sorceress’s illusory perfect breast in the haze of her magic trip; it’s such an earthy cue that the Undying are doing the creepy fae perfection thing (whoever mentioned that in the live chat ~called ~it). George really is an old hedonist and I’m here for it (especially since he keeps correlating bi-curiousness with badassery). Speaking of badassery, infinite thanks for looking out for mental health realities and being such open adhd rep. Gives us mere mortals hope!

Would love to hear what you think of the latest Disputed Lands video. Maybe you could take a minute at the beginning of one of your upcoming livestreams and share what you think. It’s a bit of Euron taking on more than he can handle in as the existential god-king idea and ties into the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn story ideas. It absolutely had me trembling. Crowfood’s daughter has such a great way of analyzing the text in a very methodical manner and, like you, using the connections to real world myths and history and Martin’s mythology and history of his created world. Brilliant stuff, but the story implications are horrifying! And it fits in well with some of the ideas that you and Grey Waste Tim have been discussing.

The scene with the Undying ones around the table, reminds me of the scene on the Magician's Nephew; the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. There's a scene where there's a huge table of petrified wizards and witches at a banquet. The children are sent there for some plot reasons; but they are tricked into awakening them all by ringing a bell.

I'm looking forward to your "Tywin is a loser" stream. I remember getting into a little debate with a fan who really thought that Tywin was a respectable guy because of his whole Machiavellian way of doing things and this person respects those who use their own power to dominate people, and i couldn't convince him that Tywin was not only an ineffective ruler in the long run, but also that he had Tyrion assault his then wife Tysha. "It doesn't seem like Tywin's style" he said to me, even though Tywin always does these symbolic gestures of cruelty to people to get his own emotional point across. The Rains of Castamere anyone?

The cup of ice and cup of fire make me think of the Temperance Card from Tarot. This card has a winged figure with two cups either pouring the liquid between the cups or pouring the cups into another container, mixing them. Ice and Fire are blue and red, when combined they make purple. Dany has amethysts (purple) eyes because she represents the balance between the two extremes of Ice and Fire. She needs to drink from both cups to succeed. The ebony and weirwood wood grain swirls together like the contents of the two cups when mixed.
@LGManDee
@LGManDee 6 ай бұрын
Temperance is also linked to Sagittarius, a chimera (in this case a centaur, but I think we could think of Targs as being very chimeric) and Sag is an archer whose arrow is truth. They are truth in speaking, truth in action, truth in seeking. I think Dany is also on the path of finding truths, speaking truths, living what she believes is her truth. Lastly, Temperance is the card of divine timing. Many themes both in ASoIaF and Lovecraft are back built on the aligned stars, signs, portents. In other words, divine timing. A very nice bit of symbology all things considered. Nice catch!

I’m actually working my way through most of your vids, to my surprise… When I started they seem so long, now I’m worried that I’m watching them way faster than you make them! Get a move on! I’m joking, you don’t need to increase your output, your output is great! You helped open up a tremendous amount of the series dude, I really had no idea how much work grrm put into these! I thought it was just plot, story, character development… I fell in love with the mystery and how much is left to either interpretation or left to the reader to figure out who did what and when they did it, which I do love… but now that I see how much more interpretation is allowed in the series really add a whole new dimension to it… and it’s also really helped me figure out those parts of the plot/subplots… now I have a pretty good grasp of the outline to the upcoming books. I always had faith he’d finish the main series, now I’m quite sure they’re both fully outlined and most of the important stuff is probably written… lining up all the details and phraseology must take sooo long, clearly that’s the point that “winds” is at. I’d wager most of dink and egg is outlined with a lot written, but it’s simple appearance is deceptive… If the dunk and egg show takes off then I bet we atleast get a book of the trip to dorne. Peace, gotta get back to work 😢

I have a theory that most people lived on Essos but that after the Long Night the different tribes scattered with for example the Dothraki crossing the bone mountains while The First Men moved to Westeros. I think it would make more sense if the main battle for life happened in one place, ie in or near the area of The Empire Of The Dawn. This would then explain the similar stories that the Asshaii, Dothraki, the First Men and etc have about the time of darkness, heroes and prophesies. If we also assume that Lightbringer is something associated with the primordial deity fire i,e a dragon and that it was magically linked to Azor Ahai by Nissa Nissa's willing and loving self sacrifice, an action that would in theory show the redeemable qualities of humanity to the Maiden-Made-Of-Light who previously turned her back on the world. So the tribe who at the end still possessed the dragon linking knowledge probably left to eventually settled in the Valyrian peninsula, later creating The Valyrian Freehold. I also like the theory that the meteors causing the Long Night were the result of the blood betrayal. That the imbalance in the primordial forces was caused by the maiden-made-of-light turning away from the world due to the cruelty of people which led to the wrath of the lion-of-the-night and resulted in the emergence of the Others. And I really LOVE the idea that the meteor shower that came from the betrayal is the same one that the Sword Dawn was forged from. It creates a cool parallel between the negative omen of the betrayal as well as the Bloodstone Emperor's fascination with his magical meteor

For a long time I have been on board with the idea that the resolution to the Others will not be achieved through violence, but through cooperation, since GRRM is an old school hippie type. Something toward the end of the stream, mentioning that Dany and Jon may need to help the Others re-enter the Weirwood Net, made me wonder about the prologue in AGoT. If Bloodraven and Bran can see through time as Greenseers, is it possible that the evicted hivemind of the Others, when they were resident in the Weirwood Net could do the same? Is there precedent for Greenseers viewing future events through the Weirwoods? If so, is it possible that the Others in the prologue who at first were evaluating Waymar Royce were doing so because they are specifically searching for Jon because they know that he is destined to help them return?

I've always seen the 'mounts' as people, her husbands- Drogo to bed, Hizdahr to dread, and Jon to love. I think the fire for life was the alchemical wedding, death will be when she burns the khals, and defeating the others to love maybe? As in her love for the people of Westeros. Unsure about the betrayals, that's always confused me

Pyramid Song, Decks Dark and Like Spinning Plate (the Why Us version with the piano) and 3 of the most beautiful songs ever, but How To Disappear Completely not only lyrically explains what dissociation feels like, but sonically leads you through those emotions. STP - Creep from Unplugged Son Lux - Flickers Sniffle Party - Wanderer Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Nirvana - Something In The Way Perfume Genius - Your Drum AIC - Nutshell Puscifer - Monsoons APC - The Noose (i’m just throwing these out as the stream goes on and everyone else was 😆) NIN - Something I Can Neve Have Portishead - The Rip

As someone with a pretty broken brain it is really difficult to believe that other people just don’t feel like this and that is part of why they can be so cruel and act like we are just being over dramatic and making it all up. That’s why having good art to help explain what it’s like and to give people a glimpse into our minds. Great list!

I think the super small dwarf is an Ifequevron. On of the small Walkers of the wood, kin to the Children of the Forest, who bless housholds that leave food for them overnight. It's very much like the Gnomes, or small elves in Scandinavian myth called a "Nisse" in Denmark and Norway or a "Tomte" in Sweden.

The forge with the Weirwood doors are a hint imo that the Weirwoods are like a forge. Azor Ahai is the blacksmith and Nysa is the tree woman/womb of creation, or forge he uses to create. Jon lives in the forge at Castle Black because he is the Azor Ahai figure. I think GRRM is combining the idea of the blacksmith (craftsman) with the demiurge concept (which means craftsman) from Gnosticism. The demiurge creates a false world, and the Long Night literally transforms the world and it's natural order. There is a lot more to say on this topic and how it connects to the alchemical themes of the story. Anyways loved the stream, this is one of my favorite chapters and I love the symbolism running through it.

Dropping a comment here at 27:52 to say I’ve thought that Ulthos was a shade tree forest for a little while now, though I truly thought I picked up the idea from you/one of your streams, Dave 🤣. However, I too deal with a case of the very real/existent ADHD so who knows, maybe it’s my own original thought 🤷🏻‍♂️. Loving this stream so much, and all of your videos/streams, and know you have many viewers/fans that understand the very real things like neurodivergence! Love ya bud!

Chavín de Huántar is a real life example of a ritual temple designed for psychedelic ordeals. There are numerous tunnels and dangerous paths at the site, which initiates were expected to navigate while in an altered state in order to gain visionary insight or commune with spiritual forces.

This is such a great chapter and you killed it like always 👏 I've never really been satisfied with the explanation that the women is westeros and 4 men with rat faces crawling over her is the war of the 5 kings. I have no idea what it could be but it's reminds me how melissandra misinterprets her flames in the fire. I do like @greyareas idea that the visions are future to past.

Great video again. I have something I would like to discuss regarding Dany's Red Wedding vision. I understand why this is the popular interpretation, to the point of almost being canon, but I have my doubts. All of my doubts spring from the question 'Why?' Why would Dany have a prophetic vision of the Red Wedding? She has no connection to the event or any of the people in attendance. She is still a thousand miles away from Westeros and by the time she gets there the Red Wedding will practically be ancient history. Unless George just included it as a bit of foreshadowing and a hat tip to the book readers I do not understand. It is my hope that it is a vision of something we have not seen yet. Hell, it might not even be a future event but maybe something from the deep past involving the story of the Night's King and his brother. I would not put it past George to subvert a popular fan interpretation with another meaning just to keep things fresh. Anyhow, I know this is highly unlikely and probably too clever by half but I would like to know what you make of this possibility.

love your content, just one correction, george did confirm Rhaegar died with Lyanna's name being his last word, it's been confirmed for a long time now. I find it so sad and tragic, with grrm calling him a "love struck prince" in 2014 on top and his favorite type of romances being the tragic ones, he really loves tearing his couples apart but also making their love feel sweet. Lyanna dying clutching blue roses and Rhaegar dying with her name is sad and sweet at the same time.

Hizdahr turning into Euron with blue lips and icy member but he was on top so not a mount. More like he was a pump and dump 2 pump chump who rolled over and fell asleep. Foreshadowing of how bad Euron is in bed. Makes you feel even worse for Falia that he was her last.
