Continuing some of the play of our Traditional Chinese Weapons Club here we have Justin and Matt doing some Dao(Broadsword Sparring). The idea of the TCWC is full speed, full contact combat with traditional weapons in a safe environment and rooted in traditional martial training. The people you see in the videos have studied the forms, drills and practices of Traditional Chinese martial arts and what you see here is the full speed result of that training!

How can you practice stabs in a safe way, do you know about any alternative training weapons? I have several swords made from the same brand/material (polypropylene) and there is practically zero flex in the blade, making them even less safe than blunt steel swords. Only the jian from this product line has too much flex, the other models are all too stiff for safe stabbing. Do you have any ideas / suggestions?

my god keep those blades fluid... move, circle, use range and feints to draw and attack BY draw. Move your weapons... "pretend" they're R E A L and try NOT to get hit.

Hahahahaha! "Somebody at some point taught you some stuff." WHACK! That was great. Are those polypropylene? Had some flex to them. I've only worked with wood training weapons.

Glad you enjoyed it! They are a pvc plastic. They are a little more forgiving on impact than the wooden weapons, and less prone to breaking or splintering with repeated impact.

What style is this supposed to be pulled from? It looks allot like fencing saber. Footwork is very similar.

The root of the swordwork is Taiji, the footwork is a combination of Eastern and Western footwork. Justin is trained in both Eastern and Western fencing and combines both into his sword instruction.

Injury is always a risk in combat arts, but we do our best to minimize the risk through some protective gear and control during the match.

What kind of trainers are those? Your average training Dao would not stand up to this.

These are a pvc training sword designed for this sort of full contact training. You can get them on Amazon

It's great to see some sparring, now you just need to mold the techniques your teaching to actually fit this competitive environment...when you do that you'll probably greatly improve in your sparring! It honestly didn't look greatly competitive, I assume this was very light sparring...a lot of strange body movement was tried here. Not to offend but this looks quite similar to a lot of the Larp sparring videos floating around (if anything this is a compliment.) I guess a lot of what I'm seeing here is a human's base instincts given the rule set and without a solid basis in combat arts...a lot of ducking blows to the legs (which you instinctively believe are always open because your opponent's threatening weapon isn't in front of them...but then you learn that due to the reach disadvantage this often ironically leaves you open.) I'm by no means an expert and have only recently started myself (perhaps that's why I'm so full of myself that I'm posting here.) but as a complete amateur what I would suggest is doing a lot of very slow sparring and having an emphasis on form and technique....but more importantly refining your form to be more COMBAT READY. Also definitely consider the rulesets/goals when sparring...if both of you are looking to just hit each other first it's not going to make for a very realistic encounter...seeing as you're using PVC what I suggest is perhaps putting paint along the edge of the swords (if you've got the means.) and making it a competition as to who can really do damage to the other while avoiding damage.

We appreciate the input. Justin has actually been practicing and teaching the combat arts for almost twenty five years. What you see here is very light sparring conducted without much protective gear. It is difficult to engage in full, aggressive combat when the hands and body are unprotected. There is a line to be struck between practicing combat and risking long term injury. The second aspect is that much of the evasive movement you see is not incorrect, it is just unique to the systems. If you watch Justin (in the red shirt) you will see that his movements are more controlled, but still engage some evasive body movements, this is a matter of experience balancing the two aspects of stability with flexibility. The cut the leg, by the way, is actually very effective if conducted out of tempo.

Taoist In Black I wasn't talking about the lack of aggression but strange movement used, as well as many exchanges not being competitive (Only one person taking initiative.) I wasn't talking about all evasive body movement...I mean turning around and trying to duck under the sword...or aiming for each other's feet. If your reaction is fast enough to start to duck your opponent's blow, imagine what you could have done with your sword given that same timeframe. Out of tempo? Maybe we have different ideas of the term tempo, from my background it means enough time to perform a single action...in which your opponent can also perform an action (which is why I didn't like some of your demonstrations.) Definitely look at Roland's great video series on these principles.

Yes, there is certainly time at various points of engagement for more direct action, and as a point of continued practice that is a valid point, it does not however change the overall nature of the combat. Combat, by its nature is full of missed opportunities. As for tempo, we are using it differently. The time to engage a single action, or for your opponent to do the same is a beat in our system of sword play, tempo refers to the rate, consistency, and use of those beats. Off tempo or out of tempo would be an action that took place between two other actions in combat, such as a stop cut or attack in time. Up tempo would be suddenly increasing the pace of beats to catch an opponent off guard, etc.

Taoist In Black I'm not an expert as I've explained but I feel as if conforming to a 'tempo' as you've described it is a bad idea in general (i'm not saying this is something you proposed), that most attacks should be out of tempo. Definitely look at Roland Warzecha's video series though even if you don't agree with him (which isn't uncommon.) the man does make some wonderful points and does well at tracing it back to the source material without becoming too dogmatic about it.
