Hello and thank you for publishing these tips and instruction my first question is , shouldn't we be blocking with the spine of the blade and the flat part of the blade so not to Ding and Dent the edge of the sword ?second question is do you know of a company or manufacturer that sells a hard plastic or rubber replica of the broadsword to practice offense and defense with a partner because as you well know the wooden swords get banged up and Splinter very easily thank you again keep up the good work

I have a question. Well, I thought that Dao is used to slash the opponent, with power. Almost like katana. And from most Chinese kungfu movies I saw that they used Dao with a movement like a circle. A powerful wide circle (that use the whole body rather than small circle that use hand like that). So why not use wide circle like movement but rather than use it like fencing?
@blurb8397 Жыл бұрын
Because action films sadly lie to us for the sake of cinematics. The dao broadsword is a fairly lightweight sword, in truth, and historically it was used as a weapon in a time where armor wasn’t really used in the region. You don’t do big powerful swings with it, because you don’t *need* to do big powerful swings with it. The sword is lightweight so you don’t need a huge swing to move it fast, and it wasn’t meant to break through any type of armor so you don’t need to put a godly amount of power into it either, realistically you just enough force to cut flesh. A huge powerful swing in this case only serves to telegraph your move to your opponent from a mile away, while the sword you’re holding isn’t long enough to have forced them to stay far enough away from you before you started your swing, so basically, if you do a huge swing like that with a dao broadsword all they need to do is quickly move in to stab you before the swing can connect. With a longsword, it would be different, those are heavy and do need a lot of momentum behind them, and they’re long enough that at the time you’re beginning your swing your opponent is most likely standing too far away from you to move in to stab you in time. It makes sense for longswords, 2 handed swords, spears, etc, but not for the dao broadsword. Btw, the dao broadsword was also only sharpened on the front side, so you could actually support the back of your blade with one hand for some sneaky maneuvers getting past your opponent’s guard at close range & such. Dao broadsword swordplay historically & practically wasn’t & isn’t huge & dramatic, it’s quick, nifty & full of fast-moving trickery. It’s fun! ^^

@@blurb8397 This isn't true. Where the heck are you getting your information from? Historically, "daos" have ranged in weight and form, but generally they were fairly substantial since they were meant to cut through armored enemy soldiers. And the primary method of using them is to swing. Maybe you mean the jian? Those are lightweight.
@raul_jocson_11 ай бұрын
You're correct. The technique both of them are using is Western fencing style which isn't representative of how these weapons would really be used. There are different styles/ways to use a dao, but generally you use the momentum and circular movement for blocks and attacks. Part of the reason for this is that with the weight of a real metal sword, moving back and forth linearly would be clumsy, slow, and lack power. As for the jian, the methods of use are are pretty complicated. I wish there were more vids on youtube that really got into them.

@@raul_jocson_ oh, i meant the niu wei dao, although taking a second look at information online it says that that was a mostly civilian weapon, so i was probably still mistaken regarding the implications on armor, as civilians wouldn’t exactly be wearing much of it i guess 😅

I'd say you are dead on in how to deal with a spear or staff, but heavy weapons really are a different animal in defending. Any kind of real block against a full weight heavy weapon has a very strong likelihood of caving, and even if you augment the block with the other hand, or use a cradle and head wrap, if the heavy weapon hits the dao, its going to hit you and the kinetic energy of the strike will just pass through the blade and in to your body. I've used full weight quandao and monk spade before. When they move, they keep going and going. While blocks don't work well, parries are great against a long heavy weapon as it takes so much less energy to change the vector of the strike. Just a thought. Thanks for the great vids

How can you practice stabs in a safe way, do you know about any alternative training weapons? I have several swords made from the same brand/material (polypropylene) and there is practically zero flex in the blade, making them even less safe than blunt steel swords. Only the jian from this product line has too much flex, the other models are all too stiff for safe stabbing. Do you have any ideas / suggestions?

I like this video, learned quite a bit, actually reinforced my own "fighting" style in that I'm going to have more of a tendency not to chase my opponent around (referring to the first guy using the broadsword). Something I see lacking with the broadsword user is that there is little to no lateral movement. Like you've said in previous videos there is that range component. He's already out of your range with his longer weapon and every time you went straight in for him he easily maintained that distance and when you did cut him it was not at close range, you had to reach your broadsword out there. I'm no expert at all in this but observation. If this was a "real" fight, I'm circling and circling and eventually the long range weapon will over commit and you side step with a forward step and slice him. This is just my feedback but great video. Nicely done!

interesting. I would love to see this with a person who is active but i understand the demo is easier that way. Nice you mentioned the footwork..often forgoten. I mainly have interests in HEMA not eastern styles but i could see this being used with some western style blades sabers...messers. all good. would you want to gve an opinion on disk handguards? Cause personally I hate them..think they are terrible and dangerous. Opinion?

It's great to see a video on the actual use of the weapon instead of the fancy twirly tricking stuff. Please come to the HEMA meets and share your knowledge. I feel that there's a resurgence on weapon martial arts and it would be great for weapon practitioners to meet, spar, and learn from one another
