I also studied architecture and it was exactly the same 😂 over the time the students came up with „good“ and „bad“ professors aka constructive criticism and personal criticism 🤷‍♀️ had no idea it’s an issue at every art school

yup, I also studied architecture .. after my first year I was practically living on campus between various ateliers trying to haul all the work on time, while almost never getting constructive feedback - now I realize nobody was actually teaching there, they only shamed us for not already knowing everything - I would say that it is because it is such a hard competition in the industry that even the teachers subconsciously feel threatened by the students .. I left after 3 years on the edge of burnout feeling like I will never be a productive member of society :D

I learned how to sew and crochet because i got so irritated looking at expensive clothes that were almost all acrylic and polyester and i wanted better materials. My first crochet project was a netted alpaca silk blend shawl and it's surprisingly toasty lol I'm going to pay one way or another for nicer clothes. Its either going to be monetary investment or a time investment. ❤

Seeing this video is oddly comforting. Im finishing my fashion design bachelors and am extremely unsure of what to do next. The landscape of the industry is a hellish nightmare between the horific ecological aspects, unethical labour and a lack of appreciation for physical labor in general. What got me into the field is my love for everything you include on your channel- hope I’ll manage to figure out my way out of this rut soon

That is actually part of why I started including these topics on my channel - I missed these aspects of the fashion industry even though there's a lot I didn't miss. Just to add a bit of comfort, I have seen people still enjoy the industry whether it was starting their own brand or working on a smaller brand. Congratulations on finishing up your bfa in fashion, as scary as the unknown is I know you'll find your way through, it's all part of the journey!

Awww when you mentioned Gordon, I remembered all the tough love from his class but I enjoyed his class the most. He also encouraged me to want to start my own brand instead of working corporate fashion industry jobs, even though I’m still too scared to do that. Maybe one day. I’m debating on going back to school but money and mental/ physical health are always the biggest barrier for me now. Loved hearing your experience and it’s funny that I thought you were one of the best students in our class because of your illustration skills, but you were/ are still insecure about your garment making skills. I love how far you’ve come, through your teen years to your career and now on your KZfaq channel. Can’t wait to see more from you, Yanga!

Aww this all so sweet, thank you Arielle! Yes! Gordon's class was my favorite too & I wished he taught design for more than the time we had him - he had a great eye for design. But definitely was not the best in terms of making the garments so I really struggled senior year lol concept, moodboards and illustration was my absolute favorite though And definitely take your time going back, your health comes first! So, the best sewing machines are vintage. Old Japanese Kenmores are a good starting place or a vintage Singer. You probably want something with a zigzag stitch and reverse. You want a full metal machine so google your finds first to make sure they aren’t plastic gears. Even the newer expensive machines use cheaper metal. You will pay between $20 and $200 for a machine in good working order. These machines can and will last a lifetime. I’ve got my mums old singer and I’m 63. I’ve recently been teaching my 7&9 year old granddaughters how to sew. They have both made a pillow case and the eldest made a reversible bucket hat. I bought them both vintage machines for Christmas (they were in excellent shape, one was $190, the other $150 and came with all the bells and whistles). and they are both enjoying it. How fast/good you get is entirely dependent on how much time you invest. I started sewing when I was a child, I took pattern design and tailoring in high school. I’m an advanced intermediate because I also knit, weave, spin and dye yarn, etc. I can knit anything. I’ve taught classes at college. I have taught probably a couple of hundred people how to spin and maybe 50 how to weave.

Completely understandable on the best sewing machine! I truly think it depends on the person for how long it takes for one to learn because everyone grasps things differently. I think the hardest for me was less about the sewing and more about constructing/pattern complex garments lol my first blazer was quite the journey

@@silkymochi I believe it! When I was in high school I made a blazer using the Dior method (at least that’s what it was called back then). It took an entire semester to make one jacket, so much hand stitching for every curve, everything lined and interlined.

Very relatable! thank you for sharing. I also transitioned from one creative industry to another. Some of my family are unfortunately harsh and openly judgmental. I taught myself to crochet but I don't make garments, just blankets and simple relaxing projects. I'm looking forward to seeing your knitting project as it progresses 🖤

Alas I would continue to wear your coffin bag & to wear all black. Listen, over two years ago when I went into the Gothic community/sub-culture, I switched to an all black wardrobe. I presume that you're here in North America like me, right? Sometimes, and I don't mean this in a mean-spirited sense, but other locales can be, well more open minded then others. Such as Western Europe, Northern Europe, expat communities in Southeast Asia, or way down under in the commonwealth nations like Australia & New Zealand. Or even Japan ect. So just keep on wearing what you're wearing. Remember my friend: We're all only given one life so live if for _YOU_ and you _ONLY_ my dear new friend. We're all here to enjoy our time on our earth. Besides never forget when others label you "weird-o" or this & that, its best to really ignore them. This was another wonderfully articulate video, as per always. Keep 'em up. 🦇👍🦇🖤🐈‍⬛🦇

While its not 100% my style, its still interesting to me. I feel the same way about making my own stuff, I graduated from fashion school in 2020 and it's only now that I'm slowly trying to get back into making stuff. You and I both know how fashion school is traumatic and encourages burnout, but now that I've had some distance from it and no longer have the pressure of grades and time crunches it really does feel like magic to just have an idea for a garment and have the skills to make it. I'm also trying to get out of the industry, I don't live in a major fashion city so there's little opportunity here aside from starting a business which I don't want to do, so I ended up in luxury retail which is just as soul sucking as you can imagine. It's like all of the parts of the industry I hate the most (the 'networking' and trying to fit in, the elitism and racism, the complete disregard for the planet and the people making the clothes, just crass fixation on appearances and labels, generally being surrounded by vain shallow people with too much money etc.) and none of the good parts (getting to be creative, help other people feel good, appreciation of the art and craftsmanship, surrounding myself with other smart, fun, creative people) It almost makes me miss art school at times 😂I have no idea what I'm going to do next career wise, but I've decided to just focus on the parts of fashion that I do enjoy for now.

That is something I do miss about school: the creative community! I hope you find your outlet again & starting a clothing brand sounds beyond stressful I also don't know if that's what I'd want. I hope you find your passion again, it took me 8 years to desire making clothes again but it's nice to remember why I liked fashion or more so style in the first place 🖤

Hey. I loved all these topics. I myself work in an environment that is very much cliques and mean girl vibes. Which sucks. I wish we could all just have fun at work. Also when I was young I always loved the past and the styles the women wore. I keep going backwards. I dresses very vintage even in high school and some family were mean and in college people were mean. This was a time in the 90s and early 2000s that rockabilly vintage was not cool. I was even told I look like a whore bc I wore red lips. I could not believe the nerve of some people. Luckily my parents always loved how I dressed and they did not care. They didn’t even care that I thrifted instead of using my money to do drugs and drink. Thrifting back then was not as cool as it is now. I love the 40s but I do love the way all black outfits look and just looks classic. I am so glad I found your channel it is great! 🫶🏻🖤♥️

Hey there Allie. So you dress Vintage/Neo-Rockabilly? Interesting. A decade ago, around 2012, I was a modern day Greaser/Neo-Rockabilly rock car. I dressed in Stray Cats t shirts; cuffed my jeans daily; wore creeper loafers & regular loafers every day. Had Cramps shirts and I put pomade in my hair. Listened to a lot of '50s rock 'n roll (original Rock 'N Roll) and a lot of Rockabilly. Was active in that whole "online Greaser" KZfaq channels such as Ask Tom The Greaser and had an entire iPod full of Rockabilly, revival, some Psychobilly as well as oddities (like vintage Halloween songs cause I was always a darker-edged person to be honest). I checked out pomade reviews monthly. Mostly I used Xtreme Wetline Styling Gel, though. While I'm a Goth now for the last three years and have finally sort of "found my calling" (sub culture) and I only went to one Viva Las Vegas Weekend in my life, keep at it!! Never let no one bully you. Its all cool. If you wish to remain Vintage forever than, hey, its your own personal business. Its the same with me. I won't lie that whole sub culture wasn't for me; _FAR_ too much in fighting. Entire channels disappeared. So after almost four years of being a 'modern greaser' or a modern Rockabilly cat, I called it quits. However, it really seems for you from your post. So yeah keep at it. Rock those Bettie Page brunette bangs and just have fun. If you're not hurting anybody & are happy, then keep at it.🦇🎃🦇

The hate inside fashion schools can be so excessive, and can turn personal! You need to be a strong confident outgoing person by nature to be able to handle that. If not, I highly recommend short (online/local) courses outside of fashion school. I got a lot of negativity from teachers imo, yet they never straight up told me to leave fashion school (In hindsight, I was their income off course...). But on top of that I got a lot of negativity from classmates/teachers as well for not looking fashionable or having a style (wearing heels, make-up, trends etc...). I dressed neutral (maybe boring) and didn't wear make-up etc., because all my energy was taken up by my work. Lidewij Edelkoort stated once in an interview that she wears neutral timeless garments, because she predicts trends, so she has to remain neutral, and that seems to get accepted just fine. Yet, I got so much hate for doing just that, to the point that I broke down on the inside. After graduating I didn't touch my sewing machine for 5+ years. I was so traumatised. I am a strong believer now of "non-aggressive communication", and promote people to look into that, it would make the world a lot nicer.

I am with you, I think I tried to hide my hurt in this video because I still haven't touched a sewing machine since I graduated and there are very messed up things professors said about my designs that didn't feel appropriate to put in video; irregardless, I understand. Fashion school was much harsher than even the actual work field and a lot of the trauma felt unnecessary I hope you're doing better now 🖤

In the beginning you talked about sewing and the cost of a Mannequin :) i saw this Mannequin DIY Tutorial: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNV2ha9ep7nap40.html . I will try it out and I LOVE making clothes myself. I am too busy at the Moment but as a student i got second Hand clothes and made new stuff from that fabric.
