Darrell Thorp is the kind of Engineer so many of us aspire to be. For me, he is THE definition of a recording engineer; someone who sees his job as capturing the best performances of the artists he works with in the best way possible. I spent a day watching him work, choosing instrument/player position in the room, mic selection, mic placement and the many other decisions he made in a quick and focused manner. Not only does he make albums with artists we all admire and who strive to be the best, he enhances their uniqueness. He’s made some of the best sounding albums over the last 20 years.
Darrell Thorp is a producer, mixer, recording engineer, and seven-time Grammy-winner. He's had the opportunity to work with many acclaimed artists throughout his career, including Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Jay-Z, and Foo Fighters, amongst others. In 2013, Darrell served as principle recording engineer on Beck's ninth studio album, Morning Phase, released in February 2014. The record went on to receive three Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, and Best Engineered Album.

Greetings Warren, Your videos are enormously helpful and entertaining; thank you very much for your time and effort in making them. Also, that video with Matt McGlynn from Roswell was phenomenal. It really shattered a lot of misconceptions about mics. As an aspiring voice over artist, I was just wondering what you think about a decent starter microphone, and will the dbx 286 be a good preamp to start with? Thanks very much. I look forward to hearing from you and stay well. Neil Quintana Lima, Peru.

Another gem for me was, "There's a small number of us at this level..." something like a few thousand in the whole US or something like that. Hi Darrell. Thanks for doing this with Warren. I really like the sound of Beck's Modern Guilt, particularly the bass and drums. For a beginner looking to develop good drum kit and bass guitar tones as a foundation for the rest of the song, what are some of the key techniques (or equipment) used to get the sound found on Modern Guilt, i.e., what would you recommend we pay closest attention to when recording and mixing to arrive at similar results? Thanks and thanks to Warren for making this happen.

Hey Warren, As usual, can't wait for you to post these intervies...you never disappoint.! My 2 cents - The focusrite studio console just sounds huge and clean in general (i believe it can't be beat when it comes to tracking)...fair enough the one I use also has some mods done to it, but i've heard it stock standard and even then it is an amazing, clean and massive, clarity right in your face sounding console - just as Darrell said...just do everything on the console. It's great. Where can I get more info on Bruce who did the mods on the oceanway desk, would love to know to which transformers he changed to and what other mods he did on that desk

Hey Warren, hey everybody. Sorry for that question being a little off topic. I'm getting a little crazy right now, because I'm searching for a video on this channel. The longer I search, the more I think this video possibly never existed. I remember of a video in which you, Warren, talked about using plugin presets and DAW templates (think it was something like FAQ Friday, with a question like "should I use presets and templates?), followed by a short presentation of your SSL console "template". Am I mad? Does such a video exist?

Lots of thanks, Warren. Just found it very inspiring, as most of your channel. Because I'm very happy with Reaper, but found some features of the now freely available Cakewalk (f.n.a. Sonar) including some nice channel emulation, I thought about linking both DAWs by ReaRoute to do a (let's call it) "hybrid dual-in-the-box-mixing template". You speaking about your hybrid console "templates" inspired me to do that and I wanted to learn from you in terms of some meaningful routing options. For which the two "hybrid vs mixing in the box" videos are priceless anyway. Best wishes from Berlin.
