First comment is true…had the Petry trade gone down first, they don’t even call Holl. Second…Stevie said in his presser that the idea was to insulate themselves from injuries…but then no one got injured lol. The real bottom line is that Edvinsson and Johansson HAVE to be Wings this season or get traded. They needed cap space probably, AND they needed to free up roster spots. I agree with D-Mac that Walman wasn’t in the long term plan. I think the only guys on the blue line right now that are are Seider and Edvinsson. Everyone else is expendable. Just like in the mid 90’s Ray Sheppard, Paul Coffey, and Dino Cicarelli were expendable.

"only so many defensmen can play in a game" then why the hell sign so many crappy Dmen to bad contracts? "Wallman was a 3rd line defender at best on a team".... using that logic he's at least worth something then, dude played hardest minutes second to only Seider. Even Elliot Friedman said I bet all the other teams in the league were like why werent we in on that deal. If this was a cash dump and with no requisite big move coming after, then thats a BAD piece of business on SY part. For a GM in the start of year 6 of a rebuild its hard not to see how this is poor asset management.

Im sorry, im trusting the Yzerplan less and less. Whether or not he was in Yzerman's plan or if he was a fan favorite, it was just pure bad asset management. Why do you have to pay to take Walman's contract? Waive him, what was the urgency for the trade unless they r making a move before free agency. Few things wrong with this. Whether we waived him or gave him away, it ends up the exact same way. He doesn't clear, and a team takes over his salary. There was something more to the Walman trade than Yzerman cooking up a plan or cap dumping. Yzerman signed the man to a good 3 year deal. They liked his play and considered him a good fit. Then something happened. The one thing we all know happened is the 'Griddy' celly. Yzerman probably hates that. There are also other things we do not know about. It could be fighting with the coach. It could be fighting with teammates. It could be fighting with Yzerman himself. Yzerman's move is reminiscent of Russia. 'If you do me wrong or treat me wrong I will send you to Siberia'. Well, Jake Walman just got sent to Siberia. We will never know the true reason he fell out of favor so bad with this team / Yzerman. It is what it is now. But Steve Yzerman did just send a message to everyone else on that team. If you cross him or the team, to Siberia you will go.

Edvinsson and Johansson at a minimum HAVE to be on the Wings next year. Johansson isn’t waiver eligible anymore. Neil and D-Mac are right…you need to clear space. I would bet a Holl buyout is coming as well. Petry only has a year left, it’s not worth dumping him, and Chairot is at least serviceable if you deploy him correctly. There could be a bigger move coming, but I’d bet more on the rumored Gibson / Zegras trade than on Leon or Marner. Still…I wouldn’t rule out Leon or Marner. They only have a year left on their contracts, so…Edmonton/Toronto wouldn’t get full trade value without an extension in place.

This is all sound and fury but it isn't a very good take on the situation. The issue isn't that woman was traded. It's hard to see where he had an open spot to play this season so it makes sense to have him traded. What does it make sense is giving them a second round pick?. You don't give assets in addition to a legit NHL defenseman on a good contract. So in isolation this was not a good move. However, I am of the opinion that Stevie is not done dealing with San Jose and this" future considerations" might turn into something big. That's the only way the second round pick makes sense. Anyways, how did this host and DMACC cropping on fans for having very legitimate concerns about a trade is pretty dumb. Either way the next week will be interesting.

Yzerman said he signed hall then petry became available hence hall was signed and petry became available and he signed him he’s a upgrade if you can call it that from hall they all are unwanted players by other teams. I enjoyed walman I wish him luck in San Jose. It freed up cap which we needed but what was touched on at the end was kinda obvious to me is that edvisson played himself past walman on the depth chart and is most likely on the 2nd pair next yr to start at least. Cap space and spot where they feel edvisson earned. What wings do here on out who knows it’s not like we are a sure bet to even make playoffs next season. If Kane goes well that’s how the hockey world works if they bring in someone to replace him hard to say who or if. I’m still on the level that this is still a fringe wildcard team for next season. They are not to the next level. They will be once the kids mature and grow but you have to have spots for them on the team to take that next step. We all loved walman charismatic personality but edvisson outplayed him and earned his spot no matter what or who yzerman brings in or doesn’t. This isn't good work. Its not just the guys on the podcast, literally everyone in the hockey world is confused by this because he Walman could have been waived and would definitely have been picked up. Walman's contract was at least even value, it wasn't a bad deal. If the deal had to happen immediately to make room for another move, Walman should have been waived, San Jose would have still picked him up like they did with Goodrow. We keep the second rounder we got in the Gibson trade, and can use it for something useful. The idea that Cossa and Trey are ready for the NHL is as stupid as it gets, don't know why you would even bring that up. Young goalies take so long to develop, and if you move them up too early it can ruin their confidence and careers.

this is about giving up on Gibson too soon after big year and promotion? How good of a prospect is the 18 year old? what are the future considerations?. walman was just ok imo. are draft depth is on the defense side and some are ready this season. keep moving the vets out Stevie and try and get the #1 centerman we need to compliment Larkin.

It doesn't matter that Walman was just okay in your opinion, just okay defenders don't have to have 2nd round picks attached to move them. This is just garbage asset management. Walman had value, was on a good contract. If this had to be done immediately to free up cap space that you couldn't wait until noon earlier today for him to clear waivers, that may have made a tiny bit of sense, but that didn't happen. The other shoe didn't drop. Nothing excuses this now.

@@patrousseau1828 I know the off-season isn't done yet, but you have to admit that since the other shoe didn't drop today, there was no urgency to this, so at the very least it is an extremely odd way of going about making a deal. Since future considerations has to be approved by the league now, and can't be some vague promise for the future but an actual tangible agreement, my guess is it has to be something to do with an agreement around the draft, but then why not make the deal on draft day in case a better arrangement comes along. The cost seems a bit high for that too, since SJ is just one pick ahead.

Lets be real people, the hope is they'll take Copp. Even if we retain some of Copps contract, he's not even an NHL caliber player at this point in his career. It was obvious just before the trade deadline that the Copp being on our team would cost us the playoffs. If you payed attention Yzerman started getting ready for this move right then and there when he gave San Jose Kostin. Thats what reading the locker room the speech was about. Hes moving on from the University of Michigan theme he tried to build an identity around. Missing on the Kasper pick is definitely forcing his hand into tighter cap issues. He needs to sign a real Center to pair with Larkin. The problem has never been the Defense or goalies. Its Copp's play in all 3 zones. Giving up Walman makes sense if you're trying to keep Berrgren.
@jordanlinscott8849
@jordanlinscott8849 13 күн бұрын
How is the Kasper pick a miss? He's the next forward to get called up next year and is only 2 years removed from his draft. We haven't even gotten the chance to see him full-time in the NHL to make that judgement.
@theskatebus1687
@theskatebus1687 13 күн бұрын
@jordanlinscott8849 just a hunch. Not exactly lighting it up in GR. It's not a full fledged miss yet, just trending that way. Danielson seems like the more promising of the 2 honestly and that's not good.
@captbloodbeard
@captbloodbeard 13 күн бұрын
Future consideration deals have to be approved by the league. Bill Daley approved this, which means that something tangible was already exchanged, we just don't know what it is. That means that it has nothing to do with moving Copp, or else that deal would have been announced at the same time, not Future Considerations. Those deals are not allowed anymore in the NHL. It most likely is something to do with the draft, maybe a promise to not draft a guy at 14 that the Wings want.

Did no one watch the Final? All Leon and Connor for that matter are, are one-dimensional players. They are nothing special at all. We need two-way players who will pound you to the ice and back-check like crazy. Defense wins championships. Florida proved that. We have enough skill/talent and don't need more players like them. Would I have traded numbers 8, 3 or 46? Sure. But I understand why not.

Make room for fans who have common sense and pay attention. Saying zero superstars, who in this case are up-and-coming shows you lack knowledge. I see you're a typical "fan" who simply expects too much and does not pay attention. Yzerman is setting up the two-way play style. Bottom line is we do not need players like those on Edmonton who think stick handling and goals is all that matters in hockey. You see what that gets a team. This whole show is hilarious. "It's for a spot!!, he was a 3rd pair dman!!" In reaction Gms literally said they'd have done it without the sweetner but didn't get a call. Also spot for who? Maatta was easily movable in the last year of his deal and cost way less than a 2nd. Want to rid the team of the cap and spot, waive him instead of giving up an asset. Unless there is something bigger, it's a shit move. Also the wings will have Mo, Chiarot, edvinsson, Johansson, and Hollif he isn't bought out under contract next year so again... spots for who? Kids that aren't ready? Mkay. Edmonton also isn't losing Draisaitl for free at the end of the year, he's getting moved. Not here though because why would he? I love Yzerman but unless there is something bigger that actually improves the team, beyond poor asset management.

@jordanlinscott8849
@jordanlinscott8849 13 күн бұрын
Yes you can, that's why you attach picks to undesired contracts. The Wings could have waived Walman to see if anybody would have taken him (I bet at least 1 team that needs to hit the cap floor would have), and if he clears waivers THEN you add a pick to trade him. Adding a 2nd and 3rd rounder to move Holl for example would make sense, but not Walman who is a middle pair defenseman on most teams. Add in that the Wings still have their buyout slots, and this just doesn't add up.

Glad Walman is gone. He is a 3rd line defenseman on a good team. He is also very injury prone and we can't deal with that. Gibson will most likely be a second line defense men in the future but we have a lot of D prospects that are closer than him so losing him doesn't hurt.

Gibson most likely will never be an NHLer, that isn't the problem. There is no guarantee any of our D prospects will ever be as good as Walman. But that is besides the point. Even if the team felt Walman had no future with the org, waive him and let him get claimed, there is no reason to have to include a sweetener for a top 4 defender on most teams that scored 12 goals in 63 games and on a good contract.
