In my opinion, the Leica M is a reportage camera. You can use it comfortably at 1/250s and f/5.6 or 8 at 10 feet. But it is simply not suitable for photographing people at an aperture of f1.4. It just doesn't work here without autofocus. On the other hand, manual focusing is also an interesting experience. But if you like that, you can also buy the Voigtlander lenses for Sony E. To be honest, I don't understand the hype surrounding a Leica M at all.

I use my leica daily for professional work, reportage and portraits, mostly wide open at 1.4 with no problems. I have a Nikon Z6 alongside but mostly use the Leica because it's just a joy to operate the rangefinder plus the quality of the lenses and the files it produces are incredible. I can understand that it does not work for everybody but it doesn't have to, that's why there's different camera's and brands out there :)

@@chrisathanasiadisphoto Not shoot portraits at f1.4 ;-) The lenses at that time were also not good enough for that. If they were that fast it was done to get a brighter viewfinder image and not to actually use that fast aperture.

@@chrisathanasiadisphoto in the past, being a photographer included gaining the skill of controlling and operation of focus and exposure. It was not a big deal. It was expected and it took a bit of time but IBIS was truly In your Body Image Stabilisation. Heheh. In the new cameras, full automation has made people lazy as they lack the skills to do this accurately. It is in the defence of the new photographer generation more difficult to manually focus newer focus by wire lenses as they do not allow for as much feel to lock in one direction or other to gain the knowledge of position/ focus and distance. It is still possible as if you shoot enough, you will get the hang of this too. The new photographer is not generally interested in these skills and the manufactures and pushing full automation: eye, bird, animal, object tracking etc. to keep people from feeling like they even need to have these skills. Think of the most famous and valuable images in museums and galleries. Typically all are manually taken. New wave sports, and action is drive driven spray and pray but at least we have a choice to purchase and use/learn as much as we want to be able to take advantage of every option that may be useful in any situation.

Not sure how long Leica can market an archaic and expensive "user experience" as the main selling point of their cameras. For this matter you could take any camera, put it in manual mode, disable autofocus and just go from there, heck, even turn off your LCD. If Leica offered superior image quality I could see the expense and inconvenience but Sony likely makes the sensor inside that Leica anyways. I also noticed the Sony images were much warmer than the Leica, was the white balance identical on both cameras? Back in the days of film cameras the Leica lenses were just so amazing, I worked at a lab where we printed wedding photos and I could always tell from the microcontrast and look someone used a Leica or other high end glass but now I think the others have caught up, modern lenses are just as good if not better. In summation I think we should all use the tools that work for us and we enjoy, for me all the high tech features of my Sony cameras allow me to focus more on the composition and art and think less about my camera settings. With manual focus or even DSLR AF lenses we never got that super accurate focus on the eyes that we get with mirrorless tech especially with a moving model.

I don’t think anyone buys a Leica rangefinder for the image quality. 🤷🏻‍♂️ (although for these shots, the Leica looked better). Also that 75mm lens is made to be soft. Get an APO-Lanthar lens and Mount it to the Leica if you want to see perfect. Anyway. The Leica colors make her look normal. Sony makes her look yellow. Many photographers get very fast photos with a Leica. How do you think Elliot Erwitt or anyone who ever shot a Leica ever got those moments all over the world? And they were shooting film back then. You can slow down or not with a Leica M. It’s up to you and how you handle your camera.

@@DarrenMiles But you’re making assertions that aren’t true. Like you HAVE to slow down when you use a Leica or everything has to be done manually or that it isn’t a perfect image and you’ll always get imperfections. All not true. It depends how you set up the camera and which lenses you use. You can shoot very fast with a Leica and get pin perfect images wide open. Just depends on the lens you use. And you’re using a lens designed to be soft and vintage. Af the very least just mount the same Voigtlander lens on both cameras.

@@DarrenMiles for example. 3:14. “There’s nothing automatic on a Leica at all.. NOTHING. Manual ISO, manual Shutter Speed”. All of that is not true. What do you think the “A” on the dials are for? It stands for AUTO.
@DarrenMiles
@DarrenMiles Жыл бұрын
@@carlosmcse Point taken, and you are correct, you CAN use auto ISO and auto Exposure. The lack of AF especially with a wide aperture lens will absolutely force you to slow down - it's completely manual focus, the rangefinder is novel and antiquated, you have to buy an EVF - by comparison it's incredibly slow. Even when shooting a static subject. This is not to say the Leica is bad or incapable as a camera - but you have to understand what you're buying. I usually shoot manual anyway, so the real pain point here is with the lack of AF - specifically with fast aperture glass. In other situations - like long exposure wide angle photography, I love the Leica - but this was a comparison I wanted to make with the gear I have. I could have brought up that I could have used a Leica 75mm f/1.5, Noctilux but after the camera and the EVF I barely had enough money for the Voigtlander never mind the $14,000 it takes to get the also manual focus 75mm Noctilux.🙂

@@DarrenMiles the Leica M is known as the “decisive moment” camera. It’s known to be the camera people used to capture split second moments. You can be very fast with a Leica M. It’s just that you’re not used to it. You can take photos fast. Of course you have to be careful with very wide aperture lenses, but if your business is taking photos at f1.2 of people then maybe a rangefinder isn’t the best thing. However the rangefinder is very accurate. More than AF because you can focus exactly where you want instead of relying on the camera to do it for you. There are KZfaqrs that are Leica guys. Anyone who watches KZfaq and is interested in Leica you can check them out. Matt Osbourne shoots models, and he uses the M and the SL. Benj Haisch shoots weddings with 2 Leica M cameras. And he shoots the bride and groom walking down the aisle and every shot is in focus. People who are just new to Leica shouldn’t be making videos about the system, how it works, and those sort of assertions because it just feeds to the Leica camera cliches on the internet that just aren’t true. Like we already see in the comments here. People have a built in bias against Leica. The truth is for most people a Leica M will make them a better photographer. Everyone who loves photography should own one.

Of course, but the $ amount will never be justified in terms of practicality. Sony is simply more versatile and a steal for the price. I’d call Leica diminishing returns but they retain their value well. I’m sure the Sony and Leica users don’t have much crossover anyways though, so nothing is lost!
