Road intersections are a place where someone from one of three distinct types of people meet one of the others. First there's those motorists who rarely if ever pay attention to what's going on outside their vehicle, second are those who are completely fucken clueless when an emergency situation unfolds before their eyes and the third group is full of morons who simply don't give a flying fuck about anything at all.

Many years back I was a volunteer in both the ambulance and fire brigade, and they drummed into us that yes, if you have your lights flashing and siren going, you CAN go through a red light, BUT don’t just fly through…treat it like a Give Way and slow down, check that everyone has seen you, and THEN proceed through. You certainly don’t just fly through at speed and expect other drivers to have seen you, especially around other traffic lined up at the lights.

In 2004 I almost T-boned a police vehicle! At that time my windows were all up with loud rap music all the way up in my Toyota Celica hahah. Luckily, he quickly steered his steering towards the pathway and over someone's lawn, hahaha!

I've NEVER had a close shave with an ESV. I drive with my windows up and my radio volumne on 5 and sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint which direction the sound of the siren is coming from. When I hear it, if I can't see it ahead of me (oncoming) I start checking my mirrors and if I'm approaching an intersection I start slowing down, hoping I don't get hit in the arse. It's the responsibility of the driver behind me to not travel too close.

Sure, a lot of them were caused by morons, but a lot of these crashes are probably also caused by perfectly reasonable, intelligent human beings. The problem is that even a second of not paying attention in the right place can cause these accidents. The more you think about road travel and the incredible amount of things that can go wrong every minute, the scarier it gets. I wonder sometimes how I don't get into a car crash either by my or someone else's doing every single time I drive. But driving is a necessity for most Australians as it's the way the cities are built, so it's unavoidable. Best strap in and hope for the best.
@addsy63962 жыл бұрын
@@timothytt547 i hope that’s not true, but if you’re right, then at least, even if you fail to avoid the accident through anticipating the other persons mistake, at least you can mitigate the severity of it… Also, as I’ve aged I’ve come to realise that intelligence comes in many different forms. For example, some people are academically smart but socially stupid… maybe these “reasonable, intelligent human beings” shouldn’t be driving when public transport is available

At least a handful of these would be caused by mobile phone use. The prevalence of this in the current day astounds me. I was driving down a main road last week and was behind a young girl in a car that I could see from her rear view mirror was looking at her mobile about 4/5 of the time. Every couple of seconds maybe she’d look up for a spilt second. I was behind her for 15 minutes and she did this the entire time. I’m a little older so I can go more the 60 seconds without involuntarily staring at my phone screen, but for people under 30 it’s a real problem. So much so they don’t even realise they’re doing anything wrong. Until they kill somebody that is…
@addsy63962 жыл бұрын
@@harmlesscreationsofthegree1248 yeah, that’s exactly why nearly all these accidents could be avoided. Take out the rule breaking element, and most of these accidents never would have happened. Unfortunately, that seems to be naive and too much to ask for these days. Its much easier and cheaper just to hide a speed camera on the side of the road then do actual police work, then act surprised when the road toll continues to climb ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Get to half way through and receive a callout for an idiot motocyclist who cut himself in two on a stobie pole speeding and running a red. More than a few of these come down to poor visibility from a car. 7:07 is a prime example. That was a potential life and death situation for the rider. The reason it happened was the large and sloping A-pillar in that Landrover. The visual equation of a car should form part of the ANCAP rating. So many cars out there that are a danger to other road users because of this.

@@Sonshine70s Ah, one of my soapboxes. The safety idiots say that drivers would tend to speed if the camber was correctly shaped towards the inside of the roundabout. They fully acknowledge that the reason they off camber the roundabout is "to slow traffic down" They know trucks going just a bit too fast fall over and crush other motorists. The designers just haven't been taken to Court and asked why they deliberately design killer roundabouts...yet.
@JohnSmith-yv6eq2 жыл бұрын
@@Sonshine70s Let's lay that one to rest. Before you start building the correctly sloped "embankment" you lay pipes down every 90 degrees of the circle. You place a drain grate above the inner end of the pipe. Water runs down the embankment through the quality high drainage seal (not the average shit stuff) to the grate then by gravity and good design....out the pipes under the "embankment" and into the ditches/pipes you would have needed in any case for an off-camber roundabout. Degree of difficulty,...very little. Though if you live in a freezing and ice plus salted roads environment...it may preclude this shape of roundabout....as the blockage of grates and pipes in freezing weather might be a problem...
