@@matthewsmith1941 The point of this whole video is that non of these autograph hounds are his young "woke" fans., they are people looking to make a buck from his signature. His actual fans, young or old, "woke" or not, just ask for a selfie and he doesn't have a problem with that (selfies don't sell like autograph memorabilia) because his fans are generally knowledgable about him and treat him with the respect he deserves. In other words, his real fans (young or old) are "woke", a word that defines someone as knowledgeable and experienced in a subject matter, idea, philosophy, etc. with regards to its content, history, cultural relevance and applications and how they effect all of us in positive or not so positive ways. Being anti- "woke" is the equivalent of the "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge" B.S. These catch phrases you're being fed that you parrot back actually mean something other than what you've been told. They don't actually carry that sardonic quality that your miseducation gleefully implies. It's like implying someone is a shit stain on humanity because they feel compassion, they are empathic and they want to help others by understanding them and all the human messiness that entails. You know, Life.

Dave is 10000000% in the right. Especially mobbing the man outside, what looks like a restaurant. I’m pretty sure, if a genuine fan walked up to him cautiously on their own he’d have no problem signing what ever you had to hand. But if you’re actively tracking the man down, just to sign multiple things I totally get why he’s not signing stuff

Absolutely. There are people who have stood outside his hotel and asked him to sign 20-30 drumheads or sticks or both. He’s been more than kind over the years to these resellers. I’m glad to see he’s setting a boundary for himself.

Majority of celebs don't mind signing for legit fans who just want to keep the autograph. But now they want multiples signed to sell on eBay. That's why many are refusing to sign now.

I ran into Dave at a CVS in 2015. I’m a huge nirvana fan and he was the reason I started playing drums in the first place. And there he was in the flesh. I was super nervous and contemplated not approaching him because I was shitting my pants, but I couldn’t let that opportunity pass me by. So I nervously went up to him and asked him for a picture, and he said “NO sorry”. I just told him ok “just wanted to say your my favorite drummer” he said “thanks” and shook my hand. I left mortified. I still think about that day. I see how much everyone perceives him as this ultimate nice guy. But idk I don’t think he is. But still autograph hounds are scum

I think his position is supportable. Once you start signing autographs freely, it's going to make those requests multiply as the word gets out that you're an easy touch. It would soon become impossible to go for a casual stroll without being pestered. These autograph hounds find out where you will be on certain days, and show up with the sole intention of getting multiple autographs. If you want any life at all, you have to lay down the law.

True but on the flip side is if they sign everything then there’s so much stuff out there the greedy sellers won’t bother chasing them anymore because it’s not worth it for them. The less they sign the more valuable it is to a seller when they do get them.

This isn’t really news. He’s been saying for years that he wasn’t signing stuff anymore unless it was for charity. I’ve seen this video weeks ago. He handled these ppl really well. He didn’t yell or scream, he made his reason understood, and then he threw in a laugh for the rest of us. Whoever posted this was obviously one of the autograph seekers and probably thought Dave would get bashed for being a jerk, but ppl are praising him - I mean, a real fan would be respectful of his wishes rather than begging like fools. They could have had a meaningful moment on video or some photos, and they wasted it. Punks.

I understand him but it also sucks for the genuine fans. It’s not that hard to tell the difference from someone wanting a signature to sell and a genuine fan. Sadly the greedy sellers ruin it for the true fans 😢

As a drummer Dave grohl is great, but I have also chatted with William goldmsmith who is also great, and the way dave handled that situation…..from what I have heard of Keanu he wouldn’t be THAT GUY …. EVER….. dave is super talented, super funny, but he definitely has more of an ego and not the same kinda person at all, from what I have seen, that is just my opinion of coarse, but I’ve been around some people, I’ll just say that.and it’s not about who is a better drummer….. at All… it’s about how he backstabs someone in his band and records over their tracks in secret …. That is a shitty thing to do …, if you are unhappy with something you can tell the person ,rather than do that, and if he would go behind the Back of a Bandmate like that, Imagine how little he cares For strangers,…. Weird. I met him after a Nirvana show in NY (at Roseland, a club)...didn't ask him for sh*t and he hung out,/chatted for about 10 minutes and we talked about music. He had promised another fan, the last time he was in NY, that when he was back they'd go out for beers but he had to back out......when asked why? He lifted his hand and he had little chucks of flesh hanging off of them. That's how hard he hit his drums! There are probably a 1000 stories about how nice of a guy he is and I am just one of them. Don't idolize him, he's just a dude....... who happens to make great music and wants his personal space respected, like any one of us would.

Good for him!! 👏 To take the time to sign something for a "fan" and then end up seeing it for sale on Ebay would piss me off, if I were someone like Dave Grohl. It makes me mad and I'm just a fan!! I still have my autographs from back in the 80's and would NEVER, EVER part with them! If they're selling these autographs then they're not real fans in my opinion. 🤘🏻

It's Dave's decision, and it's a respectable one. Dave cares about his fans, he doesn't want autograph hounds and scalpers to profit off his name. There are lots fans who would genuinely love the opportunity to just meet him some day and have a conversation, or have a photo taken.

I can only imagine the challenges celebrities face when it comes to interacting with the public whether it's autographs, dating, friends etc. You would really have to be extra intuitive to figure out who's genuine and who isn't.

I had a friend that always went to meet musicians to get things signed and I'd occasionally go if it was someone I liked. 20 years ago it was just fans, over time it became really pushy dudes who just wanted to flip stuff on Ebay and it would ruin the entire vibe and scare the artists off.

Entirely fair enough. I don't even really ask for selfies with people, because the whole point is me meeting them. That should be enough. If you're at the point where you're asking your favourite artists "but, why can't you do it?", it means you're more interested in getting something, than meeting them.

I loved how he handled that situation. They should be grateful that he gave them the time for the explanation and entertained them further with his getaway. Lots of stars adopted this stance, and they have every right in the world to do it. I'm not sure what the big deal is. They don't owe anyone anything. That's the problem - when people start feeling like an autograph is mandatory. Most of the time they just want to talk to you for a minute and hear your story. They just want to connect with fans and feel normal for a moment.

There is a video of Lars Ulrich signing a bunch of albums for these guys right after getting off of a plane at the airport but Lars didn't look like his happy self and he wasn't talkative like he usually is. Come to find out he knew these guys were just getting them signed to put on Ebay. There was a link in the description to buy them. Lars still signed all of them, though.

I could never understand the obsession/worship of celebrities and hounding them to friggin sign something. Yes, they’re in unique professions but at the end of the day, they put their pants on one leg at a time just like the rest of us. That being said, Dave Grohl is my favorite musician of all time. I have all members of U2 autograph when I met them in an in-person event. That is all I need! There are two sides to the coin and I respect his decision. When I met U2 they were so humble and they did not care. Just a good group of guys. David Grohl could be a little more humble and just relax and sign a few. But I do totally understand if he does not. Love that he does things for charity since he knows whatever he signs will be given to a good cause. Since he does sign for charity events that help the most vulnerable, I am in total support. When I met famous people in the past, talking with them and getting a handshake was enough to make my day. The day I met U2 is unforgettable no matter where the autograph ends up!

Some celebrities have mentioned that they will autograph an object if it is also with a dedication ( " for ______ " for example ) , we know that it won't be easy to sell unlike those objects with the sole signature, I remember the Pawn Stars episode where Chumlee is sent by Rick to find Bob Dylan to sign an album by him , Chum Lee finds him but he also asks for who, and he writes " To Chumlee , Bob Dylan " , Rick gets pissed off because the album can't be sold anymore.

Exactly... I have bought a couple of signed guitars and l'll keep them forever. Kerry King from Slayer and every member of Stone Temple Pilots. My old band covered Nirvana and Foo Fighter songs and l'd want nothing more than for Dave to sign one of my Gibsons... I guess now, that will never happen..

@@scottyd2262 I used to date Maynards cousin a few years back and I argued with him about it. He refused to sign shit for his fans. Infact when people go to meet and greets he sends a dude out in a mask to pretend he's him while the real Maynards back stage drinking wine . If I ever made it in music I would definitely hook people up with autographs and if they can Make a buck off it fine. Go up to the homeless guy and sign his sign.

he handled that well these people gave no fucks about him, they just wanted an autograph. he was definitely in the right. he wasn't even rude! that run to the car was priceless.

These days people just sell autographs on E-bay. Celebs have a right to deny fans of autographs. Personally, I like the idea of donating the proceeds to charity.

To each their own, but if I were a famous rockstar I really wouldn't care if people sold my autograph online. If you wanna keep it, great. If you can make yourself some money from it, that's great too. No skin off my ass. At least Dave wasn't an asshole about it.

I remember listening to a Devin Townsend podcast where he said that he asked Dave for an autograph in the early 90’s and Dave said he didn’t do autographs.

He is awesome. he was polite and tried to explain. He handled it as only Dave Grohl with a laugh. The guy who said “you said in x city and signed the next day” It Daves right not to sign or to sign. He is a human being. his choice to do what is right for him. he has also followed Eddie Vedder in being pissed about fans getting jacked by ticket prices. So two thumbs up dave!
