Not only the respect he has for his craft. The fact that he turned down playing with prince on the sole reason that he was hammered, speaks volumes. He respected him to the point that he wouldn't want do do prince the disservice of showing up drunk. But his mindset for rock and roll. I remember watching a monolouge of his where he says: "if you go to a concert and listen to some band who just plays as a job, it's just for money and recognition, you might as well go watch some robots do a stageshow. But when you hear someone play rock and roll, and really walk it like they talk it, and play from the heart. That's thr most powerful thing in the world." (Might be paraphracing a bit)

@@j_freed Bullshit? What bullshit? Prince named himself the "Artist formerly known as Prince" because he had broke his contract with Warner Bros, which stated that he couldn't use his own damn name if he broke the contract before his 5 years he "owed" the company were done - yes, Prince was his actual name, or should I say their actual name because Prince was non-binary ("I'm not a man, I'm not a woman, I'm something you will never understand")... anyway... So "Artist formerly known as" is a legal thing, nothing else. They were just that clever. Oh and Grohl said that he had a school fundraiser the next week... It's not different than "normal" people : life goes on, you had a great moment, and then you think about it, but hey, you got stuff to do. And prince had STUFF to do. Like rehearsing 3-4 shows at the same time. And producing other top artists... name it So the only bullshit I see around here is yours, J.

@@jas_bataille Prince was not non-binary- he was a straight, hyper-masculine man. I'd bet any amount of money that he wouldn't have identified as non-binary- he detested people projecting labels onto him... that includes overly broad labels. Those lyrics are from the perspective of Jesus/God, which is used as a metaphor in the Purple Rain film as his *father* says "I would die for you" to his mother in one scene before ending up in the hospital. In Christian theology, the "father" is incredibly important, symbolically, so the allegory holds up really well when Prince's main character writes and performs that song in dedication to his father. I agree with you about everything else though. I really love Prince.

I sat a couple seats away from Dave at that Forum Concert series performance that night- in the front row of the risers. I remember Dave just standing around at the end of that concert kind of stunned by the whole thing he just saw- I think you could see he was really kind of blown away by the performance. Everyone waited forever for Prince to come back out for an encore because rumor had it the night before he had played like an hour after the end of the concert and he just kept playing. So this night, nobody went home at the end. Nobody. The applause went on for a very long time and he never came out.. ... like a half hour or so and eventually when people finally gave up and after the cameramen came down from the overhead rigs and after the lights went back on Prince rode out on a bicycle and tooled around the main floor for a few minutes with a big smile on his face and he quickly left. I won't forget that one anytime soon. All seats for all 19 Forum concerts were the same low price. ALL SEATS. My front row seat that night was 25 dollars. So I went like two more times later that week. No two nights had the same setlist. Amazing concert series. I loved the fact that he priced the concerts cheap enough that everyone in town could afford to go. Real music by real musicians.

Prince was a genius. I was lucky enough to see him in concert 4 times. My friend was working in security for one of the concerts. He told me that on one of the days of the concert he arrived at the venue early. He was experimenting with a riff he had in mind and gradually expanded the melody, created an awesome solo, added in other instruments, and the lyrics and by the end of the afternoon he had a completed song which he then played at that evening's concert. That's how easy it was for him.

Sometimes it just flows. I remember watching the story of how Suzanna Vega wrote "Luka", and she indicated that, while the concept had been kicking around in her head for a long time, the actual writing just sorta happened. It was started and over in 10 minutes. She still has her original notepad and it had zero edits. To be clear, my intent isn't to compare Suzanne Vega to Prince, but sometimes it just flows. For Prince, he was truly prolific - for him, it flowed early and often, and frequently resulted in one iconic hit after another. Sometimes he sang those hits, and other items it gave it to someone else, but the guy was a truly special creator. The Bangles, Shiela E. (ok, girlfriend, so it figures), Alicia Keys, Sinead O'Conner, Chaka Kahn, Patti Labelle, and even Stevie Nicks sang Prince penned hits. Heck, Kenny Rogers sang a Prince tune.

Prince was the rare musician who was as popular with the masses as he was with musicians. He was as much as a people's entertainer as he was a musician's musician like whether you're a singer, a guitarist, a drummer, a bassist, a saxophonist, a pianist, a music producer, you've got to respect Prince's musical mastery. In general, you're either adulated by the masses or adulated by musicians marveling at your mastery but both across the whole board at this level is rare.

"You wanna play drums?" "YEAH!!" LOL. Dave Grohl. We all have our idol's. Rest in peace Prince. He may have been a bit strange, but he ripped arguably the most iconic rock and roll induction ever with his performance on "While my guitar gently weeps". I love your work Dave, respect you as not only a bandmember of Nirvana, but lead vocalist, drummer, guitar player, song writter. Prince absolutely destroyed that tribute. We'ld be kinding ourselves not to acknowledge Prince as one of the best guitarists in our century.

Dave Grohl saying "and then I never saw him again" you can see the realization of what he said hit him and he almost gets emotional so he moves back away from the camera and ends the story quickly. I'm sure if he had kept talking he would have been emotional. Such a powerful moment when one legend is a fan of another legend. It's like watching Clapton get emotional about the last time he saw Hendrix.

He could have made it to follow-on engagement (he's Dave); yet, he didn't need to; the moment was magical and Dave sensed it was perfect as captured. When I listen to Dave describe his childhood, how he learned to play drums, the music he listened to while learning, his friends, influences...I am amazed that me, growing up in South Texas, and Dave have a lot in common. I suppose a lot was just the time we grew up, in the 70's and 80's. Dave is a few years older but I was so heavy into everything from Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath, and RUSH to The Sex Pistols, Germs, X, PIL and The Eagles, Manilow, Bread, Sinatra. I am self taught also, spending hours learning songs in my garage with a walkman. And I am first and foremost, I am a fan. Music literally saved my life! It was my outlet and my focus...it is my passion. I love to hear him talk about how he is star struck when meeting his influences. I understand it completely, having had the honor of opening shows for a few of mine over the years. Still get that way every now and then. Dave is someone I would love to meet one day and just compare notes. His note book is much more full than mine but to talk as fans would be great! It must feel amazing to know that people look at him exactly the same as he looks up to his idols!
