Someone actually did find a catalog from American Watch Company. Their white label watches are priced between $100-$250 per unit. I suspect that Dave paid a little more for the custom designs. They're still not worth anywhere close to $2,400.

When I think of a high quality, luxury but not overpriced watch, my Sinn watches come to my mind. The watches feel really great on the wrist and I always appreciate to wear a quality watch that I have earned. Would be really interested what you guys think of this brand. I think the criticisms here are objectively good. It is worth pointing out though, that the "watch community" is not everybody who wears watches, or even most of the people who wear watches. Got to say you’re WAY to generous on your review of the Brick, after seeing the Nomos. I think the Brick wouldn’t be under priced at $500 and would be significantly over priced at $1000. Not even in the Hamilton league, let alone Nomos. Look at what Smiths gives you for under $500…And to top it off they’re asking for orders based only on computer renderings, so you can’t even see what the designs will look like in the flesh. And $2400 for a unseen Ronda quartz, YGBSM!

For 2500 dollars you could get a Tissot PRX chronograph with an automatic movement, and a Hamilton Khaki Auto on a bracelet with an 80 hour power reserve… could have a pair of quality Swiss watches with incredible value for money and mountains of heritage and history surrounding the brands. I feel like Portnoy’s attempt at generating some sort of blue collar appeal to his brand is a disingenuous effort to create some niche in the watch world that has already been filled by multiple companies with well over internet 100 years of history behind them. He also was being pretty insulting and condescending to “watch nerds”… who would likely be his customer base anyway with that price range and lack of brand recognition. Idk why so many people love this dude anyway. Seems pretty obnoxious.

The quartz section is just factually wrong, because “solar” and “kinetic” movements in this context are also quartz movements. AND that is a picture of what looks like a Rolex movement. The Brick watch has no brand equity trying to charge $2,400 for a Sellita on SS case. There is absolutely no reason to pay that much for a glorified Movado.

It’s actually 20% of proceeds that go to the brick by brick fund. That’s a pretty decent chunk so the philanthropy is a large part of the decision to buy this. I don’t think “the watch community” is his target. It’s largely people who are unaware of the value proposition

It is indeed much more simple than people explains: when you sell a watch for more than the price of its constituent parts combined, there has to be added value for the consumer. In established brands that tipically is a mix of: brand recognition, propietary design and added features over generic components. Dave P. thought that his persona was the added value that makes the brand and therefore the 3x mark-up was justifyed - he received his lesson.

Nomos, Oris, Longines, Seiko 8L35 movement etc all immediately come to mind in that $2400 price category. Hell, even Tag Heuer is a better value proposition. I’m not sure who would buy this Brick Watch

A quick search turned up that exact Ronda 5040.D quartz chronograph movement for sale on eBay for $45.95. Lol. This guy totally doesn’t get it. Even a “Top Grade” SW200-1 costs less than $300. These must be some crazy cases and bracelets that explain the high price tag. Oh wait, they’re just 316L stainless…just like a $250.00 Seiko.

The chrono looks like something that you get with a bottle of cologne and the other one looks like a timex.

I like Dave for the most part. Where he missed is that he doesn’t know his customers and market. He has stated before he isn’t a watch guy. He doesn’t understand how and why the Watch community (overwhelmingly his market here) sees this as a miss.

Rule #1 of starting a watch brand: don’t tell people that you’re “not really a watch guy”.

There’s zero shortage of the kind of watch Portnoy claims to have been intending to create. There’s lots of tremendous options around 2-2.5K. Hard to imagine he couldn’t figure that out before setting off on this venture. He claims to know pizza- does he own a pizza shop? He’s proud, not to be a watch guy, that’s fine, until you try taking one to market.

The watches look like Michael Kors or Fossil with low automatic Citizen or Seiko quality....maybe....for CRAZY money. I mean how are at least the automatic worth more than even $500 USD??? I really tried so hard to see where the value is! I can see these going on Jomashop for 80% off.

This was a great video guys. I am a barstool fan and a Dave fan, however, comparably the Brick watches are not worth the price at all whatsoever. these watches are hideous, period. wouldn't wear one for free. There are many, many watches out there for $200 that blow these out of the water. You were far too kind.

There are some products where celebrities can cash out with subpar products dressed up as quality. Watches ain't it. Watch freaks are way too nitpicky and exacting to let you get away with that.

My tinfoil hat theory is that these were originally supposed to be $300 dollar watches, but MVMT (who advertises with Barstool) got upset about Portnoy creating a rival fashion watch company. In response, Portnoy elevated Brick watch to the “entry level luxury” price segment so Brick wouldn’t directly compete with MVMT. Either way, just a terrible idea and obvious cash grab by a guy who clearly doesn’t care about watches. Glad it’s getting so much hate.

When you buy a luxury watch, you're ultimately paying for the name. You can get a reliable watch for under $300. So if you don't have a name that brings the image of status, you have no way to justify that price. He would have been better off making a brand for the average person with watches that range from $100-$500

Great video guys. So on point in this review. You give great points of comparison for both Dave and all of the entry level buyers trying to u defat and what’s different. I’d say it a $500-800. At most $1k. But one of his advertisers may have saw that as a affront to their market and he did a price review. But so many watches in that range. I would not be looking at that watch for that price. It’s not bad it’s just overpriced. But he may sell because he has a great following🤷‍♂️

Dave wants his watch company to be Hamilton.......and unfortunately Hamilton has spent 100+years working on being Hamilton.....the watch market is such Dave portnoy would have had a better shot at making 35k dollar high end pieces.......the mid tier luxury market is dominated by companies really offering a trifecta....history,value ..and quality....he has none of that...not for nothing but Gucci has automatic 40 mm date just style watches automatic ETA...for 1200$....and you could re sell that for 1200$

LMAO, for $2200 you an buy a Tudor 1926 opaline dial, an automatic Hamilton Khaki King black dial, a DW5600 Casio G-shock and have $200 bucks left over. And if you wanted the chronograph, you would just switch the Tudor with an automatic Hamilton Intra- matic chronograph. Or just spend the extra $500 and get a used Tudor Black Bay 58, which is, arguably, the greatest watch value of the century.

That's a tough sell, for that price I'm buying Oris, Nomos, or Monta

So many companies want to launch new watch brands but 9/10 lack the brand identity. It's okay not to have extensive heritage 'yet'. Or else it's just another watch brand that is looking to dilute the market. Remember the whole Bubble tea and Poke Bowl hyped era? There were 4--5 in every mall and larger plazas.

I’d price the automatic model at $ 1,250 with that 20% to charity consideration and $ $1,000 without. The quartz chrono model is just too ugly for me to even think of a proper price.
