Is the game in 2022 much better than this? Okay the fitness is better and all that but in terms of football? I’m a Utd fan but this is quality

The pitches, foot ware, ball, sports science, all different back then, the touch Kenny had on the ball back then, can you imagine him and a lot of the other players in the modern game

Bobby Robson, the greatest manager we never had. Sammy Lee played a blinder. Thanks for another great game, Dave.

Can’t agree on that one Just Dave. I accept that Ipswich did not have a big a squad but I always felt that the difference between Liverpool and Ipswich at the crucial stages of seasons was that we had Bob Paisley whose experience I felt was a calming influence. I always thought with Ipswich there was an element of losing their nerve.

Brilliant performance. 10 players + Johnston was the team in Rome 2.5 years later. High pitched shrieking towards Wark at end there as he got the ball in the chops

Hadn’t remembered how weakened Ipswich were by injury that day. I remember veteran Alan Hunter played in the League Cup second leg four days later ; a 2-2 draw but Liverpool were already two nil up from the first leg. I knew we would win the league that day. I had a similar feeling in 2014 when I was there for Arsenal being beaten 5-1 again in mid February but that time I was wrong . Thanks again for posting Dave

We (Ipswich) had a world class 1st XI but the quality really tailed off with injuries. Cost us the previous season when we should have won the title. I remember Liverpool being really dominant this season so was a surprise to see Ipswich just 4 points back in 2nd place. We never touched the top 6 again, until our amazing run in 2001.

I was only very young, why did Terry McDermott leave Liverpool not long afterwards? Always looked such a great player. In fact Sammy Lee, Phil Neal and Alan Kennedy were gone 3 years later too I think? Ray Kennedy another who was gone around 81/82?
@randyborstol2491
@randyborstol2491 Жыл бұрын
Neal struggled during 1984/85 and the fans patience wore thin. He was poor and struggled against Man U in the FA Cup Semi Final replay. Kennedy was struggling for a good 12 months before Kenny dropped him. Both were well over 30s and with Nicol and Beglin showing class it made sense. Sammy Lee had 2 bad years of injuries and after Souness' departure was off the pace a bit. Terry Mc was over 30 but the club got tired of his nocturnal activities.

I don’t think he played many games after that one and yes, you would wonder why from that performance. As you say, Ray Kennedy had gone a month or so before as Bob Paisley had spotted the new energy that Ronnie Whelan brought in. Phil Neal and Alan Kennedy as you say lasted until the end of 85 but four of the five players you mention were in their early 30s when they left and Liverpool were always looking to replace before someone was absolutely finished having learned the lesson of 1970 when the veterans went on too long. Exceptions were Dalglish playing to his mid 30s and Souness probably could’ve done if he hasn’t gone to Sampdoria in 84 aged 31. I can’t remember how long Sammy Lee lasted. I always thought Jimmy Case (who SL replaced )was a better player despite being uncapped but it was said that he and Ray Kennedy ( RIP) drank too much together for Bob Paisley’s liking.

Phil Neal and Alan Kennedy left within weeks of each other at the start of the 85-86 season. Kennedy’s last contribution was an own goal against Oxford! Mind you, I think we can forgive him that for all of the vital goals that he scored in major finals.
