I saw DB when he went out on this tour in 1978 at the old Boston Garden. He was flawless vocally and this band was as tight as could be. David was very stylish during this period and he changed four times during the show. I was 17 and blown away by his performance. Today's auto tuned performers sound like computer generated weenies compared to Bowie.

This is the first song that had ever made me love David Bowie. So much, in fact, that I'd wanted to do a full-discography dive on him. My mom was taking me to an exam for a scholarship opportunity, and it had been playing on the radio, in a shorter edit. This version is the entire song, in every beautiful moment. The second most-covered song that he'd ever released, in his entire lifetime!!! 🥰💙 Der Musikladen was a television program in Bremen, Germany. It translated to "The Music Shop", and you can think of it like The Midnight Special or The Late Late Show, or something of that nature. After the addiction issues that I'd mentioned in previous comments, David had moved to Berlin, Germany with Iggy Pop from The Stooges, as well as his band at the time. There, and in Switzerland, he'd released 3 of his studio albums: Low, Heroes, and Lodger, commonly known as the Berlin Trilogy, as well as two albums with Iggy Pop, called The Idiot and Lust for Life. 4 of them had all come out in 1977, before this performance. The song is about his producer Tony Visconti having an affair with his backing singer, Antonia Maass, under a gun turret of the Berlin Wall, and both are featured in the studio version, as well as two prominent musicians known as Robert Fripp and Brian Eno, from the groups King Crimson and Roxy Music. His band here had consisted of Carlos Alomar on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, in the iconic purple shirt, Adrian Belew from Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention on lead guitar and backing vocals, George Murray on bass guitar and backing vocals, Dennis Davis on drums, Simon House on violin, Sean Mayes on piano and backing vocals, and Roger Powell on keyboards/backing vocals. Alomar, Murray, and Davis had been on all of his mid-'70s records to 1980, and were commonly known as AMD, or Raw Moon. From Young Americans to Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), there they were!!! This song is one of the most significant in music history, because it was almost single-handedly the one which had kickstarted the 1980s New Wave movement's popularity, after a few years of other tracks falling under the radar. The sound of Heroes is the sound of post-punk and MTV, and it was inspired by a 1960s track David had loved, called I'm Waiting for the Man, by The Velvet Underground, of which he was the first artist to ever cover or perform it live. He'd seen opportunities as they'd arrived, and seized them like no one else, so he's gotta be the most influential solo artist of all time!!! 😃😄

David was always good with a great vocal talent, classical vibrato that hits the note perfect mostly while covering 3 notes in that vibrato, his octave range is also outstanding.

In 1987, David and his band had played this song in front of the German Reichstag, and been a part of the public morale boost which inspired Germany's government to demolish the Berlin Wall. It's a huge part of history, this song, recorded in a place called Hansa Studios, underneath the shadow of the wall itself, in 1977. There, Bowie had been placed in front of three microphones, set at great distances apart, and he could only activate them by projecting himself with each section of the song. Naturally, he'd triggered them on his first take. Robert Fripp had used feedback to hold his notes with a large amount of sustain, rather than employing an e-bow as most guitarists would, and both Simon House and Adrian Belew had replicated that here. It's outstanding, what people can do to create a song like this, but even more outstanding that they could perform it live in an even greater capacity. It's impressive, to say the least!!! 😃😄

Bowie took one 'take' at vocals in the studio occasionally two... and that was in the days before 'auto tune'. Even 'auto tune' can't correct his vocals they are so good.

This was a german tv show it wasn't his tour stage. By the way if you want to listen to a powerful female voice listen to Florence and the Machine Florence Welch is extraordinary.

Interesting you likened some of this performance to Elvis. Elvis was one of the biggest influences behind a lot of David's material. What Chris told us about the downing of the Berlin wall, is fantastic. Those behind the "Iron Curtain" had more and more pressure piled on them until they finally relented, and most of the northern hemisphere celebrated the releasing so many oppressed people, that only a week before would have been shot dead for trying to cross over into the "west" of that city. That was as good as the down fall of the communist grip over eastern Europe, And the start of the fall of the USSR, Czechoslovakia Yugoslavia, to name just those I remember. Sadly, it took many many deaths, and even warfare to calm things down. But even now there is still strife in many places where people won't get along, and leaders want to take back that which they believe they're deprived of. Enough of that already. Boy, I really have to shut myself up. This song, on so many levels is uplifting, giving strength to the weak, supporting the down trodden, cheering up the down hearted, and so on. Not to mention the excellent music, that is timeless. Sounding as though it were written yesterday. So good, even Motorhead covered it. Lemmy took a bit of persuading, but was chuffed with the result.

An incredible parallel is that Presley and Bowie had shared a birthday: January 8th. For David, it came across as an apparent sign that he should pursue being a musician, rather than a painter. The depth that both of them had pulled from their range is something which only comes naturally; their resonance, and those dynamics. Their sense of style. There aren't many people who could change or redefine themselves in the ways that both of them had. Bowie would be king, indeed. I'm excited for Randi to get to the phase where Bowie's hair was not unlike a peacock!!! 😅😄

@@grahamnash9794 I couldn't imagine doing things another way. It's probably one of the reasons why I'm so connected with these exceedingly diverse artists; the envelope pushers. There's always something informational about the ways that they've approached their music. It's not necessarily created for the sake of entertainment. There's something valuable about what each song gives us for each subgenre's growth and expansion. In a way, these artists, David Bowie, Avenged Sevenfold, Megadeth, Trivium, Iron Maiden, Sabaton, and Slipknot are sort of like our teachers. Not everyone will necessarily understand which lessons they're teaching, but on a profound level, they've displayed ways in which, sonically, technically, lyrically, emotionally, and conceptually, they're allowing us to better understand an idea, whether it's something which we've never heard before, an historical occurrence, character development, or maybe feelings that we're not quite sure how to engage, otherwise. It's very friendly and nurturing, listening to them. I'd like to accomplish something similar in my own way, on top of creating my own music. I can see a lot of us being teachers on different levels, and I know that Randi's very proud of her ability as one. Everyone has such a unique story, and those who live long in great places of risk definitely carry great details in the entirety of their life. From his birth to his death, David Bowie was one cool music teacher!!! 😎🖤

@chrismeadows4216

How is it one of the worst? In most performances from the '70s, he was doing the single version or not hitting the chorus at full capacity. In the '80s and '90s, he'd often performed the verses out of order or kept himself away from high notes. The Berlin 2002 performance is the only other one I could name where he'd hit the "YOOOUUUUUuuuuuuu" slide in the same way, and his articulation is perfectly on key. That version should come later, because it doesn't have the same context of him still being in the Berlin era. If this vibrato he's employed isn't moving, I don't see how the squeakier performances or any where he's miming would be better.
