He was everything rolled into one. Pop, punk, glam rock, soul, with so many reinventions of himself. He also fought for diversity and equality in music. Truly an icon. I hope you go down the Bowie rabbit hole. He has endless hits.

Bowie was the chillest rock star, always dressed up, he was called "The Thin White Duke". He moved to New York years ago and was the opening act at the Concert For New York after 9/11, he sang this song there too, for the police, firefighters and emergency service people that were at the show.

Loved your reaction. David was born less than 3 miles from me in South East London and when we both moved he was still only 8 miles away. He was good friends with another local lad: Peter Frampton and his Dad taught Peter and David at Art College together :) This is the closest you will see the REAL David as he played many, many different characters on other songs and albums as you will see, my friend :)

I grew up with Bowie's music in the '70s, and was lucky enough to see him live in '83 in Oakland. SOOOOO happy to have at least that one Bowie live experience. He and his many collaborators/bands have been in the soundtrack mix of my 55-year life, including some especially poignant markers.

I love David's music. His singing was on top of everything. He adjusted his singing for the song. They all are different ranges. What a great person and musician. Peter Frampton's dad was the music teacher at school. And taught him how to play the horn or whatever it is. I can't remember the name. Can you imagine all these guys in school together....you got him Framptom Mick Jagger the guys from pink Floyd. List goes on and on. I don't know if they were in different grades but were friends....

The brilliant drummer is Sterling Campbell. He's American, and used to live in the same apartment block as the amazing Dennis Davis (RIP), who was drummer for David Bowie in the 1970s. They met, and Sterling was mentored as a drummer from age around 15 or 16, by Dennis, who took him to hear jazz. And then Sterling became David's drummer and was in the band until David's death.

@@dubzer0649 You are most welcome. I'm a mine of useful/useless David Bowie information. Bowie inspired the people who worked with him to do amazing things, and loyalty was born from that. Mike Garson started working with David in 1973, and Earl Slick in 1974. Two corrections: it's Catherine, not Katherine, Russell, and Sterling started being mentored by Dennis at age 14. This is a link to some of the band talking about working with David: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8uKg6mrnLyynGg.html And this is a link to Sterling talking to Dennis Davis' son, Hikaru, on the "HD project". Dennis was truly the greatest drummer ever. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bJaXiqqYtZ-Ue2Q.html

Bowie had at least a 4 octave vocal range in his younger days. He was 55 in the video here from 2002 shot in Berlin Germany. In the late 1970's David Bowie lived in Berlin and recorded three albums there which his fans call "the Berlin Trilogy." The Heroes record is one of the three and it was released in 1977. The song was written when the Berlin Wall was still up and divided Communist East Germany from West Germany and freedom. I was in the Army in the 1980's stationed in Germany before the wall came down. Family members who had not seen each other since the end World War two in 1945 were finally able to reunite when the Berlin Wall was finally torn down in 1989. David Bowie played a concert there in 1987 and risked his own life by doing so. This was at the height of the Cold War and only helped to stoke the fires of revolt and revolution against the Communists iron fisted oppression. When the Wall was finally torn down Bowie was credited for playing a part in its demise.

The very most important lyric to me (THE WHOLE ROMANCE OF THE SONG) reminds me of the Falling of the Berlin Wall (during the night of November 9, 1989, crowds of Germans began dismantling the Berlin Wall, a barrier that for almost 30 years had symbolized the Cold War division of Europe.) Can you imagine being part of the history of that, and stopping 'freeze frame' and passionately making out with "your person" during that moment? No matter what, "You are you, and I am I. And if by chance we meet.. it is beautiful.” And Fk'm all.

If you want to stick with the 70’s, you can’t go wrong with anything from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust And the Spiders from Mars, but my favorite from that album is Rock & Roll Suicide. He was prolific in the 70s, so you can also. check out his foray into R&B with the incredibly funky Fame and Golden Years, and Station To Station. For Pop, Life On Mars is a classic, as is Changes. The 80s saw his biggest hits, but check out Let’s Dance to hear his collaboration with a then-unknown Stevie Ray Vaughan, or Young Americans with a young Luther Vandross. Legends making legends! The 90s saw some heavier stuff when he collaborated with Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails. “I’m afraid of Americans” is a great track for that era, as is “Hello Spaceboy.” One of his earliest pieces is Space Oddity, and you can hear him revisit a character in a later song Ashes to Ashes. Can’t really go wrong with Bowie, but you’ll almost never get the same thing twice!! Enjoy!!
