@@HappyKat-wc4ld it was an added concert at the end of his tour - also saw him at Earls Court which was where the original show was in the same year - the tickets for Hammersmith were all sold at the venue and we queued from five in the morning on the day they went on sale to get good tickets but even then there were hundreds of people in front of us but I think everyone must have bought stalls tickets because our tickets were just amazing in the circle - fantastic night - great memories

Two of those three people died on January 11th!

And don’t forget, Trevor Bolder no longer with us either.

I know it sounds hack but the 70a was truly the most creative era of music because it brought so many elements together in that era. By that I mean, these artists were the products of people that lived through war and then it all exploded from Elvis onward and by the time the 70s were nearing their end...the artists were so experienced in both life and talent, that music reached an incredible crescendo. Punk signalled the next era and things changed but it was a fantastic point in time.

Seriously? The Howlin' Wolf vibe was in this song right from when Bowie wrote it. He said he'd ripped off Howlin' for the riff and Lou Reed for the vocal style. The riff was also used in a song by The Sweet called Blockbuster which was released around the same time as The Jean Genie.

There's an interview with Mick Ronson somewhere on KZfaq from the Hammersmith Odeon before he passed (late 90's, maybe) where he referenced Muddy Waters' 'I'm a man' as the influence, at least for the guitar riff. With due respect to any of the Blues' legends, it can get hard to make the distinction, sometimes, with that sound phrasing, unless you're a real knowledgeable fan of the genre (I, myself, am not), and there are a lot of variations and versions (Bo Diddley), and different titles (Willie Dixon's ' Hoochie Coochie Man comes to mind) recorded. Have to think both Bowie and Ronson were keenly aware of, and influenced by the Yardbirds, who recorded 'I'm a man', and especially Beck, before they themselves 'hit it big', a few years later. Maybe the Jean Genie riff was just them attempting to channel an old song through the filter of Ziggy Stardust, and Ronson's Custom and Marshall Major. Maybe just another example of "everything old is new again". Or 'ripped off', depending on how you look at it. I suppose Bowie and Ronson's appeal struck a different audience, as maybe with The Sweet, yet I think it's still evidence of how much American Blues and R&B may have affected the next generation in the U.K., consciously or otherwise. Certainly an iconic groove, and not one soon forgotten, whether by Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, The Beatles, Yardbirds or Bowie, methinks. The ongoing 'argument' in this house is who's take on it is 'the best'. Depends which generation you ask, I suppose, although there's no argument about whose make up and costumes get the highest marks, for better or worse... Hope the next generations don't lose sight of the relative historical and musical value of any or all of it...Thanks for the interesting comments.

Bowie was never this muscular on stage again, but that was the genius of the man - he left the eras on a high - Scary Monsters to wrap up the '70s, and BlackStar to wrap up everything.

He didn’t reinvent himself the way Beck did but Van Halen was the last guitar player to change the game. Gave us the “Brown Sound” plus popularized tapping and hot rodding guitars. Before he came along, the idea of things like putting a humbucker in a Strat didn’t exist. Influenced generations of players and owned the rock scene from late 70’s till mid/late 80’s

The reasons why we won't see it's like again are many. Enough for several books, at least. Put briefly, it was a _transistorized_ culture - free from the constraints of vacuum tubes, and before all the computers got in the way. It was also immediately following *the psychedelic era* - which (thanks to perpetual nostalgia) can't possibly be A NEW THING ever again. No chance whatsoever, thanks to The Internet being (in some aspects) even weirder than the 1960s ever were, but also utterly mundane.

@@frankyrubful - Nobody in particular - I watched whoever was on The Midnight Special, but I have always been more of a country fan - also watched Hee Haw every week! I was drinking heavily thru the first half of the 70's, and sometimes those years are a little fuzzy.
