David Coulthard has won 13 Grands Prix in his 15 seasons in Formula One. His double wins of classic driver races in Monaco and Silverstone as well as Spa stand out as his single greatest achievements during his long career at the top of motor racing.
From 2005 he activly helped to build Red Bull into the Constructors and Drivers World Championship winning team of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 season.
I sat down with David to talk about his early days in racing, his path to Formula One, accepting team orders and how he played his part in building Red Bull.
David's honesty and his ability to reflect on his career provide a great insight into the human behind the racing driver.
Filmed on location at Widder Hotel, Zurich and David Coulthard Museum, Twynholm. Still pictures provided by Darren Heath, darrenheath.com/

He was always one of my favorites because of his attitude. He was never over the top arrogant and he wasn't one of those drivers that immediately made bad things someone else's fault. Great interview. I'd love to sit down for a pint with him.

In my mind anyone who even makes it to F1 and wins races is a success. So many are quick to criticise DC but here is an honest man, an honorable man and a hard worker. It's fair to say if there were more people like David Coulthard the world would be a much better place.

Wow...what a gem of an interview. I have been watching F1 since '84 and he is one of my favourite F1 people. I know DC not at all personally. But he seems like a very decent fellow...and I will take that over 'cut throat, world champion' any day. Talent is fleeting, honour is timeless.

Uncle David. One of my all-time favourites. It's a pretty safe bet, that if it weren't for him, Sebastian would not have won as many races, and possibly as many championships as he did. David had a huge hand in the development of that winning Red Bull, which included helping bringing Adrian Newey into the team. In the last decade or so, he's one of the few F1 drivers I wouldn't mind having a drink or two with. Kimi would be another, but I doubt I could keep up with him.

Coulthard is such a cool guy. Him and Mika on McLaren are still my favorite team of all time. I don't know why he was given so much flack about Australia 98'. Like he said, the team as a whole was always more important to him and he respected the guys he worked with. I have a lot of respect for a guy like that. I would love to meet the guy, he's really cool and well spoken, not to mention he was a great driver as well. If he were in a different era without the competition he had such as Mika, as well as Schumacher, he would have won a championship for sure.

I followed and supported DC all the way through, I was bitterly disappointed he never won a championship but you can't deny what a quality human being he is. At the end of the day, that is vastly more important. As Jackie Stewart always says, winning is not enough.

I think his message about belief is a huge one and it's an amazing story. It's so heartbreaking when you hear somebody who doesn't have the success you want and you say "well have you just tried doing something a bit unusual or just going for something that's tough but might pay off?" and they go: "No because I know I'll fail and it's a waste of my time". So frustrating! David has the complete opposite attitude and I really admire and commend that.

AndyBVids David was my hero growing up, I think he is one of the most under appreciated racing drivers in modern times. ON his day, in a Mclaren that didn't fail he had the measure of Schumacher as much as anyone on the grid.

he is so modest i know he was in an era where Schumacher and hakkinen were the great drivers but he always got a podium or a win or just a result with even a cat at times that should not get those results he should get more recognition for his achievments even in 2008 he was a solid driver

By far the most sympathetic character in the F1 industry that's known to public. Incomparable to Martin Brundle. DC has a lot of humour and is, in my opinion still at the BBC, severely underrated.

Very capable driver.. Fast and steady. He had some bad luck with the Mclaren car which made Mika a number one and David had to help in the second role. I enjoyed his races, always hoped he would do well. Happy he did! Still enjoy seeing him on the BBC/Sky. Thanks David for making the formula 1 more interesting.

Fantastic (one-sided/no questioner) look into one of F1's good guys. We all make mistakes but DC's final 90 seconds clearly reveal something rare. With parents owning a moving company, he did not rise from the slums but he knew enough to not burn bridges, knock on doors and ring some doorbells. Great advice for anyone; driver or not. Thanks for posting.. ! Can't wait to hear this interview with Seb, Nando, Lewis, et al. when they finally retire.

My hero growing up, and one of my favourite drivers of all time. Also one of the most under appreciated drivers of that era. I'll never forget watching him destroy "Der Rain Meister" at the Senna S in torrential rain and go on to win the race, then leaving A1 ring with another win under his belt he was just 4 points off Schumi going into Monaco and he scored Pole. I'd watched him win it the year before and I was so confident he'd repeat it, until his Launch Control failed :( My father and I screamed at the television as Enrique Bernoldi held him up in his arrows for 33 laps! He still finished 5th, the legend, but Mclaren suffered more Launch control failures, Engine failures and the old DC bad luck came back thereafter. Still one of the nicest, funniest dudes in the paddock! DC forever B-)

DC is one of the great personalities of F1, and an excellent communicator. Maybe he wasn't the greatest but he could have been world champion - he outperformed Mika Hakkinen in past seasons, and was close to winning in 1999 but had even worse reliability than Hakkinen that year, and he was close with Hakkinen in 2000 until the final few races.
