I just read the book. Rookie wasn’t an insult. The rookie title was referred because there was three groups in that race. Rookies, Veterans, and the professionals. He was in the Rookie group

Your body can actually get to a point where your sweating works so effeciently that you just stay cool. I've only ran up to 11 miles a couple times, but it was always nice to get in that zone.
