this is so brilliant because the lyrics could be about any adolescent/college party, however the delivery of the video gives a much more chilling and disturbing visual while still holding true to the lyrics.

Kind of a lazy easy message to draw isn’t it? You can say that about literally any music video ever that takes place at a party but isn’t a happy party song. If it takes place at a party but is dark music in general, of course you can say that but have you seen Eraserhead or Lost Highway? The best thing about anything Lynch does is that the result is polarizing. He aims very high attempting to create a special, specific mood, and he doesn't always hit the mark dead on-- it's testament to his exceptional talent that he ever hits it at all. Even his biggest fans (and I count myself among them) don't unilaterally love each and every thing he does. I happened to really like this-- the song more than the video-- but I can appreciate how well the video fits.

But that's not what makes it great. What makes it great is the beauty of the images, of the colours, of the cinematography, of the editing. Cinema is a figurative art. When you see a painting by Jackson Pollock, would you ask someone "o, what does it mean?"

No pain - no gain. Like anything not trivial (and especially art) it takes time to train yourself to open your mind and accept discomfort for a while, you may find it hard to believe, but eventually your brain will enjoy it so much, you will want more. People are talking a lot about junk food, but no one acknowledges junk entertainment. David Lynch is everything that stands opposite of junk entertainment.

@@laburgy 'fun'... they want the 'fun'... they were promised the 'fun'. I live in Las Vegas and used to out walking on The Strip late at night. I'd see these people, tired and empty, but still at it... still searching for the 'fun'. Couples wheeling their toddlers around in a stroller at 1am, looking like refugees.

This reminds me a bit of that get together in Wild at Heart with the texas style porno and the war stories and the rocket scientist seems "normal" for Lynch characters to act like that and see that is the issue with crazy sometimes it's not crazy to them. Really some girl took off her shirt a guy poured beer on a girl they ran around the back yard other than the hair on fire just listening to the description of the evening sounds pretty tame I've seen some things at some parties weirder than that.
