Moyes was the 2003, 2005 and 2009 League Managers Association Manager of the Year . . . He's had some very good seasons at Everton & now at West Ham alongside tough times at Man Utd, Sunderland & in Spain. If he wins the Europa League Cup with The Hammers it will be well deserved given his commitment & persistent professionalism. For me Moyes demonstrates failure doesn't have to be the end: if you love what you do & your approach remains honest & true - if you stay committed to a vision you might be given another chance to succeed. I'm not a West Ham fan, but I would be genuinely impressed & pleased to see David Moyes lift another trophy (if we count the Charity Shield). It's clear how hard he's worked & how much it would mean to him - Good luck Gaffa!

Fantastic conversation. As a United fan, I thought he at the time didn't really grasp the fact that he needed to evolve from his level at Everton to master the United job (including keeping coaches and looking for better players than Fellaini to sign), so it was very interesting and very impressive to listen to how he today looks back on that too short a period. In hindsight, even though that season was disappointing, he should have been given at least one more year. With Herrera and possibly Kroos on the way, it might have been a different story. Respect.

The day I knew it wouldn't work fof Moyes was when he was interviewed post match about RVP. He said something along the lines of "I probably should have subbed him, but I know you lot would have murdered me for subbing him when we needed a goal". Moyes wasn't making his own decisions, the pressure of the job was dictating to him. Maybe he would have gained the belief and authority in the end. He wasn't helped by players like Rio, who didn't really give him a chance. I honestly think that's why he wasn't offered a new contract at the end of that season.

@@stevengallagher635 MU targeted some quality players but didn't follow through for various reasons - mostly incompetence and a lack of vision in the boardroom, but some of the managers have to take some blame too. Moyes turned down signing Toni Kroos and opted for Fellaini instead, while Mourinho went for Matic over Fabinho who was very keen to come. Had just those two come the midfield would have been much stronger and its the area United have struggled with most, especially since Carrick retired.

Can understand it, but looking back you needed United men there. Ironically now he seems to have learnt from it. Even though he brought in his own staff at West Ham most have experience of the Club, Kevin Nolan and Stuart Pearce to name two, and the Youth side have a lot of ex players who are now coaches at the Club. People who know the fans, habits and ethos of the Club are important. Closest I think we have had since the late great John Lyall, who ironically helped Ferguson a lot in his early days at Old Trafford.

@PWMoze

One thing Mr Moyes could have said was that he is successful 'at the moment' . One of the things that he must have observed over the years is that things can change very quickly in football. It is very easy for the wheels to fall off overnight. So his biggest achievement at West Ham has been to establish a degree of consistency. This has led to a degree of success more than anything. Of course a 'hard work' ethos amongst the team and staff helps and establishing a style of play that everyone understands and buys into helps. He seems to communicate that very well and that may be assisted by an excellent backroom staff that he has assembled around himself. The players trust him and welcome his input. But there are limitations to his approach. Over the past few years he has navigated the transfer windows quite poorly, admittedly not wasting money, but not investing it especially wisely either. He has allowed very expensive players to leave at great loss to the club (Haller and Anderson) without properly replacing them. He has brought in new talent cheaply (Soucek, Bowen, Coufal, Lingard) but not always successfully (Yarmolenko, Banrahma, Vlasic, Kral). Developing a better scouting system must be one of his current concerns and to be seen to bring in top quality players who can improve the team by not being afraid to spend. This summer will be pivotal if he is to move forward as many of his stalwarts are coming to the end of their contracts or their careers (Noble, Ogbonna, Fabianski, Cresswell, Fredricks etc). Also, he rarely makes use of the talent from the under 23s academy who currently have an excellent crop of promising youngsters (Alese, Chesters, Okoflex, Forson, Perkins etc) He also seems reluctant to use players on the bench, preferring to rely on a very small group of trusted individuals who always get picked to start. This works well until they become injured or when the fixtures pile up. Michail Antonio is a case in point who has no obvious replacement and has commented that he would like more competition for his place to motivate him to raise and maintain his standards However, as far as representing his employers, the club, the players and the fans, he does a fantastic job. He embodies a common sense, down to earth and humble philosophy really well. He seems somewhat old fashioned by modern media standards, but that only serves to improve his profile. Never too happy, never too miserable retaining his dignity. No controversial soundbites but lots of common sense. He has shown great ethical standards too. People like him. People respect him. But the real test of David Moyes will be whether he can leave a lastng legacy of achievement: silverware, glory. Improving West Ham's level in the Prem year on year is important, European competition is important. Great games at the stadium create wonderful memories. But to be considered as a trully high achieving British manager he must win trophies! He must bring home silverware! So far nothing. Fingers crossed. Come On You Irons!

Man United fans don't need to look at the current Prem table to be reminded of what a real team of hard working players West Ham have .......who just happen to be competing with the likes of Sancho, Pogba, Cavani, Fernandes, Greenwood, Rashford, Fred, McTominay, Maguire, etc. Moyes is doing a great job and wants to strengthen the squad in the summer and you can put money on West Ham competing in or around the top six positions for a third season running. I'm dead certain that Rice will be staying on a official club captain after Noble has retired in June.

Moyes was an Excellent manager at Everton and I'm looking jealously at West Ham wishing we still had him. Although I am behind Lampard now he is here. Unfortunately Moyes burned his bridges at EFC with some Ill thought out and disrespectful comments around the time he left for Man Utd (a decision that no level headed Evertonian would have begrudged him - moving to a bigger club, one of the biggest in the world). Regarding his time here, he turned us from relegation battlers to a team capable of finishing regularly 5th - 7th and even got us 4th. Took us to a Cup final too. He got Everton to be relevant again for around a decade which other than 95-96 and 13-14 we haven't been during the PL era. His flaws were in his courage against the top sides away from home and couldn't win us a trophy. His best attribute was his eye for the right type of signing. Something we have missed since about 2015 when Martinez started off our decline. A top class manager. Wish him luck.

With the benefit of hindsight, the "problem" was obviously Manchester United...NOT David Moyes. It was a club that had high expectations, and a desperation for post-Ferguson continuity. There was little patience for anything which resembled a backslide....and Moyes (in the fan's eyes) was not really deemed to be the kind of first-class "trophy" manager they thought their former success had now earned them. A "Klopp"...a "Guardiola" ....a "Simeone" etc. This lack of foresight IMHO lay squarely at Ferguson's feet. He'd built United up so strongly, that they didn't need to go out and try and replicate the "Ferguson" model and it's ethic all over again (the Moyes appointment) That foundation was already laid. United simply needed to maintain their competitive momentum....and ought to have appointed somebody much better fitted for that task. Moyes mistake was failing to "read the room" in allowing himself to be seduced by Ferguson and believing that United fans would be far more patient and forgiving than they actually proved themselves to be. Ferguson's endorsement of Moyes would only ever grant him a rather brief period of patience and tolerance. Once this was exhausted...(and it very rapidly was)...Moyes received the full wrath of United's fandom and swam right into the unforgiving gaze and scrutiny of the media. Manchester United was heading for it's earliest spell of post-Ferguson dysfunction....and Moyes became just one of a number of the club's failed, managerial "whipping boys".....(They've since appointed three more who suffered the same fate...) As I said....it was a "Manchester United" problem in all truth and reality. Moyes walked straight into a very poisoned chalice of a job....and it was never really likely that it would be a rewarding experience for him.

@@foreverred105 "Taking time" with a manager is basically asking a fanbase to tolerate humiliating defeats and unconvincing performances...along with spurious purchases etc. I mean...that's what it really translates to does it not? No fan base should really be asked to do this when you think about it. Fair enough, a little bit of backsliding MAY be absorbed by an otherwise confident fanbase who feel that their new manager has a viable master-plan, but to ask a fan base to support an incompetent manager's "learning curve" is a gross over-reach IMHO.

The main problem with Moyes was that he went to Man United and was instantly negative, playing down expectations and just being very dreary in press conferences. He did not exude any confidence. Then weirdly, Mourinho who used to be The Special One, the confident one, came in and was also very negative. Man United need someone with some positivity.

We have ended up with Ten Hag over Poch and yet in Moyes, we're looking at one of the finest managers in the game and we're looking at his 6th place now, Immediately following SAF in a very different context, because literally NO manager since, has managed to turn things around. He is a BRILLIANT manager. Just LOOK at what he's doing at WH. They're better than US!!!

David Moyes could have been 20 years older when he took the United job, and he still would have been sacked by them 100%. When Fergie said thats enough, its finished", thats when things fell apart, Moyes couldnt do right for wrong, then the fans started having a go at the guy, then the players thought, christ Moyes aint Fergie, so down tools, and Moyes was sacked, ridiculed, and slung away. Its took him 4 years, to get back to what he does best, which he discribes in this Pod Cast, but if the Players dont want to listen, hes doomed, but this squad he has, want to listen, and learn and give it all, and now they are seeing their work come together, never look back David Moyes, look forward. Now it took Moyes 4 years, how long do you think it will take Utd to get back up to the top..................Well firstly not until those players are put back in to their places, so it will be a long long time.

Moyes is a very good PL manager. But the truth is that he's never going to be a Man United level manager and it was a huge mistake by Man United to appoint him. IMO the only reason he got the job was because he is Scottish and it was another in the long line of awful managerial recomendations by Alex Ferguson. I don't blame Moyes for taking the MU job because I think it's almost impossible to turn down an opportunity like that, but Man United want and need someone on the level of SAF, Pep or Klopp and Moyes is never going to be that. Man United appointing Moyes is similar to Liverpool appointing Roy Hodgson. They are both good managers but they were promoted way beyond their levels.
