I have always had a great deal of admiration for Justice Souter, and his sharp wit and New England bites are definitely expressed in this hearing. He certainly gave Sen. Specter a good read @5:15!

Ted Kennedy did vote against Souter, but after the big surprise, he regret that decision.

Yeah he became one of the more liberal justices on the court.

Justice David Souter was one of the finest justices to ever sit on the Supreme Court, and also a very kind and decent man. His appointment to the high court was the best "mistake" that George HW Bush ever made. : )

Surprised how substantive the questions were and how substantive the answers were. It is not going to happen now.

he really was a surprise to daddy BUSH. assumed to be a conservative, yet he sided with the liberals 75% of the time. what a ray of sunshine.

I like the look on his face when Senator Humphrey is asking him the "abortion question". Even before he mentions abortion and he's saying, "You were a member of the board of trustees..." Judge Souter has that look on his face like "oh damn, here it comes!"

why is it that ideologs cannot understand that a person can honestly have differing opinions and sill be uprightand and true to their beliefs. he had principals and honor. he was to g.h.w. but was what brennan and warren was to eisenhower they were not as conservative asthe president who appointed them had hoped. he should hav stayed on the court longer, but i feel he must have had pressure from the more consevatives on the court to vote their way.

You could add “or what Harlan Fisk Stone was to Coolidge”, although there would have been no confirmation difficulties in 1925 with someone as conservative as Pierce Butler or Willis van Devanter, whereas 1953, 1956, 1975 and 1990 were very different. I discuss the question of a possibly completely overturned New Deal if Coolidge had picked someone more conservative at www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/if-a-conservative-was-nominated-instead-of-harlan-stone-and-edward-sanford-did-not-die-suddenly-does-the-new-deal-get-completely-derailed.499158/. Souter actually had wanted to leave the bench at a much earlier date than 2009, to return to his New Hampshire home. He did not want to see an ideological conservative like Alito, J. Michael Luttig, Diane Sykes, Janice Rogers Brown, Edith Jones a decade and a half late, or Brett Kavanaugh a decade early as his replacement.

@Willredd94 He and Tom Harkin have both been in the Senate from Iowa since the 1980's, and they keep doing a good job. Seems interesting because Grassley is pretty conservative and Harkin is pretty liberal, but they kind of represent the overall political environment in the state.
