Drawing well proportioned heads consistently is a challenge for any beginning artist, and some us old pros sometimes too! There are a lot of different ways to approach head construction, but one of my favorites is the Loomis Method. In this video, we break down Andrew Loomis' head construction technique!

I can’t believe my drawing professor didn’t show the Loomis method when I was in school. This definitely takes the mysterious difficulty out of drawing heads. I’m going to practice, practice, practice and then attempt drawing my grandchildren. Thank you for this video.

Every art class in primary school should start with this to get the kids psyched about drawing faces. I feel like starting with still life is such a big turn off for so many young artists. It definitely was for me.

22:36 Getting comfortable drawing box in any perspective is so important before drawing loomis head, especially the centerlines of the box. Understanding space greatly helped me in getting the placement and angles of the facial features right. I was surprised how good I can get a head to look now with a bit of focus. Great video!

Mr Finch, if by the off chance you read or are notified on comments to month old posts; I want to say how immensely helpful and informative your videos are, especially for amateur artists like myself. Every time I watch I learn something new about your technique, and the process of drawing comic art in general. Some say it’s a dying art form, but artists like you prove that it’s still alive and energetically thriving. Your work is amazing, and your work with Tom King on Batman was EXTRAORDINARY. Thank you 🙏🏻 ❤ -Big Fan

I don't know David, I'm frustrated with my Art I'm doin everything that I can to get better yet I barely progress. I've been drawing almost all my life but not seriously, the last 8 months tho I draw every day, I thought I need to work on my foundation so I train only anatomy and figure drawing at the moment. But it's like no matter how much I draw I barely can see progress.. there is no way I can even get half as good as you. You know I begin to feel like those people who say you don't need Talent to draw like a pro are wrong. I don't have much talent, I thought I could get there by hard work but I'm giving up, it's the worst putting your heart into something only to see how bad you are.. I can copy almost everything and make it look good but for some reason I can't draw the stuff I want to draw out of my head. And always copying other people's great art makes me feel like a failure, it shows me that I got no skill whatsoever
@unfortunatetiming4169
@unfortunatetiming4169 Жыл бұрын
If your good at copying, use a bunch of references and combine them to make something close to what you want. Use 3d assets, photos, other artist’s stylistic choices. It’s like photoshop but you draw it instead. Besides, if you have been drawing your whole life, you’ve definitely been improving. Look at earlier works and compare them to recent ones to see how much has changed. There is no way that you haven’t unless you aren’t working hard.
@citigirl3238
@citigirl3238 Жыл бұрын
Since you realize that you copy well, spend a little time analyzing the forms you are making, break them down mentally so that you develop a mental library of values, shapes and forms. Next step is to imagine a full composition in your head with or without references (photo or real life); Now take the imagined composition and break it down on your paper into a series of shapes and forms, decide lighting and now add values. voila! you have your mental composition….. act like you have to teach this process and the steps will become more automatic in effort.

That's exactly the thing that annoys me, there are like hundreds of different books different techniques out there, it's like a big ocean and I feel like I only dipped my lil toe into it 😂. I think my biggest issue is that I have no idea what exercises to do in order to get better, in the last 8 months I copied drawing after drawing, studied the skull etc. And I think I made some progress but not to the extant I was hoping. The tip with the breaking down the forms and reconstruct them is actually a good tip, but that won't really help if my mind goes blank whenever I want to draw something out of my head. Thanks for the help tho appreciate it
@citigirl3238
@citigirl3238 Жыл бұрын
@@robertpreda9741 if you can give us an example it might be easier to help you figure out which exercises might elevate your results. Example: if I want to draw a street scene I might start with one point perspective angles, including different sized buildings and roofs. Next I/you might add a few sidewalks, street corners, then a car or two. These additions all involve practicing squares, rectangles, cubes in perspective then with cars it would require practice of circles and spheres in perspective…. eventually you might add a few trees, requiring practice of cylinders, triangles and pyramids…. etc grounding them using rendering techniques, shading and including values so the viewer knows what time of day you are depicting.
@robertpreda9741
@robertpreda9741 Жыл бұрын
@@citigirl3238 I didn't really got into perspective yet that's what I mean , there is perspective, anatomy, composition, gesture drawing, colour theory ( which I'm staying far away from cause I have no clue how to use colours right , blending etc ) I've been practicing obly anatomy for 8 months to build a foundation cause my goal is to illustrate good looking characters with the right anatomy. Well after all it's just a hobby I don't really plan to do it is a job someday, I wouldn't really be able to cause I don't think I'll have the skills 😂 beeing a self taught artist is tough, I wish I had like a mister miagi like mentor haha. That would be nice. I'm drawing on moleskine usually 165 gsm paper which is the best paper I have ever used, it's forgiven even when u make mistakes . I usually draw very light , like h4 - h6 and rarely go darker cause I'm afraid to screw the drawing up. That fear of making mistakes is my biggest issue I've been told that a lot of times that I need to step outside my comfortable zone in order to make progress. But each time I do the results are not very good
