Over 100 Climbers Have Died Attempting The Highest Peak in North America, Denali (formerly Mt McKinley). Follow the expedition of The Great Summits--Famous Mountains of the World--DENALI.
With a summit elevation of 20,310 feet (6,190 m) above sea level. With a topographic prominence of 20,194 feet (6,155 m) and a topographic isolation of 4,621.1 miles (7,436.9 km) Denali is the third most prominent and third most isolated peak on Earth, after Mount Everest and Aconcagua. Located in the Alaska Range in the interior of the U.S. state of Alaska, Denali is the centerpiece of Denali National Park and Preserve.
The Koyukon people who inhabit the area around the mountain have referred to the peak as "Denali" for centuries. In 1896, a gold prospector named it "Mount McKinley" in support of then-presidential candidate William McKinley; that name was the official name recognized by the federal government of the United States from 1917 until 2015. In August 2015, 40 years after Alaska had done so, the United States Department of the Interior announced the change of the official name of the mountain to Denali.
In 1903, James Wickersham recorded the first attempt at climbing Denali, which was unsuccessful. In 1906, Frederick Cook claimed the first ascent, but this ascent is unverified and its legitimacy questioned. The first verifiable ascent to Denali's summit was achieved on June 7, 1913, by climbers Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, Walter Harper, and Robert Tatum, who went by the South Summit. In 1951, Bradford Washburn pioneered the West Buttress route, considered to be the safest and easiest route, and therefore the most popular currently in use.

My sister was the only one small enough to descend down a crevasse to rescue a Slovakian climber who fell and wedged himself at the bottom. His group was climbing at night which is safer, but he wasn't roped together with anybody, and didn't see the narrow void in front of him. She said the space was so tight that she had to be lifted out in order to change positions and be lowered back down. She spent about six hours of the 15 it took picking at the wall of ice to finally free him enough for rescuers to pull him out. The guy survived, and months later, contacted her from Slovakia to thank her. For her efforts, and to show his gratitude, he offered to buy her a vehicle of her choice.

if this was in June 2017, my guides from RMI also participated in that rescue. It was incredible the climber survived both the initial fall and the long time it took to get him out.

This video was beautiful !!!! Photography and music was outstanding! I recently learned Mt McKinley's name was changed back to Mt. Denali. Loved Mr Marky Raney (past ascend with his guitar). The Ukulele did not have a chance but he was very wise to turn back. I was impressed as I always am watching this videos all the weight/gear Mountaineers have to carry and Misty did it! Her dad is correct to be so proud. I cringed at seeing the avalanche and the shouts I am like "no don't shout". So sad about Mountaineer Naomi Uemura he climbed alone and died alone up there RIP. The "Sun pillar" looks magical and breath taking. Congratulations to Misty and the Team from Japan awesome footage. Thank you David Snow P.S. I did not see in the credits the narrator's name. Lovely clear voice.

After watching Nova PBS (The first climbers to their destination) your climb this looked a bit easy due to many human foot prints on snow or ice while climbing to Denali (23 days not easy) , but then again its not even easy to walk in busy city streets, you guys have done a very superb job while climbing connecting each other with ropes, team work always works so stay connected with your ropes , ropes can all ways save lives..:))

So, I'm flying my drone at a Thai mountaintop temple. Two Thai guys peddle up on touring bicycles, they run up the 350 stair steps, run back down and run up again. I go over and ask them what's up and they tell me they are training to ride Denali from Anchorage. I asked them if they knew a grizzly bear can run 55 KPH (35 MPH). The expression on their faces told me they hadn't thought about that!

I don't know - it seems like there's an absence of brain cells amongst some of these climbers, not to mention disrespectful of Denali. People who are too old and heavy to climb running out of steam - even when they're the guides? People triggering avalanches while climbing alone in unstable snow? Carrying guitars around? Walking straight through a crevasse field with the one with no experience at the forefront? Going right under seracs with a hope and a prayer? Lazy late starts on clear mornings after 9 days of rest? Guides roped to camera crews?

Great video of climbing Mt. Denali. However, the trump commercials suck almost as much as trump. He'll be in prison before 2023.

It is recognized by both names.

@@coolgirlfrozenfeet The only mention of Denali was the native people's name for it. Otherwise it was McKinley throughout. That's why I thought it wasn't a recent documentary..

@@coolgirlfrozenfeet Man, you are all over this comment section, bitter about the name changing to what the indigenous folks call it. McKinley never even visited the state or this wilderness, get over it.

@@radicalcenter1453 who cares. That’s not relevant. I’m just pointing out the truth, and informing people that it is still locally referred to by both names. It’s like the town of Barrow being renamed to some nearly unpronounceable name. Nobody actually calls it that. It’s still Barrow.

It wasn't renamed. The name was changed back to it's original name.

No Sherpas to carry their gear and basically spread the red carpet for them here. puffing and panting. Anatoli Boukreev submitted this mountain in less than 11 hours without stopping.
