Richard Stanley is making a movie of it, coming straight off The Color Out of Space which many have hailed as the best Lovecraft adaptation to date.

There was a version made in 1970 starring Dean Stockwell. It's not bad, but if the re-make is as good as Color Out of Space then I will look forward to it.

@@DVSPress unfortunately it never happened because his wife accused him of abuse so the studio black listed him. Only to turn out she was lying so sadly we may never see him make it as studios are not known for admitting they were wrong

Not convinced powerful stories can't be written without "heroes". Average people being overwhelmed by inexplicable forces of the universe seem to be far more what Lovecraft was trying to convey, and the very reason he is so interesting and unique.

This is one of my favorite of Lovecraft's tales. The build up all through out the story and then the pay off at the end with the big reveal about who the father is, is something that a lot of modern day creepy pastas lack.

Visceral is too down to earth because visceral is about what happens inside the characters. You can't necessarily understand the scale of the tsunami if you are swept by it, but from a distance, you will be able to see that the wave is larger than the west coast and swallowed the Rockies.

i think that it is terrifying from beginning to end. actually, i was frightened of what would happen to Wilbur. the witch hunt is at the center of the text and is revolting. fascinating aon.

Another one of my faves too. IMHO Ihe Dean Stockwell film, though horribly dated now, is still one of the better attempts at capturing Lovecraft in film. And the Dunwich Horror itself, only briefly glimpsed is an effective shock monster when you finally get to see it.

Will you review 'The Haunter in the Dark', 'Nyarlathotep' (the prose poem), 'The Shadow out of Time', 'The Whisperer in Darkness' or 'The Dream-quest of Unknown Kadath'?

Hey,David, i'd really love to hear your thoughts on Conrad's "Heart of Darkness",respectively "Apocalypse Now". I'm trying to figure out something in a story i'm working on and i'd like to her different opinions on the matter presented in both the novel and the film.Thanks.

The Dream-Cycle (Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, Gate of the Silver Keys, and Through the Gate of the Silver Keys) are my favorite of Lovecraft’s works. I think that those stories would make a great movie as they recount Randolph Carter’s adventures through the Dreamlands, and across time and space. They would have to make some female characters though as it is a complete sausage fest. Perhaps Nyarlathotep could be female? As well as some sort of love interest that dwells in distant Kadath whom Carter initially dreams about, instead of “gambrel-roofed houses”?

All great until Through the Gates of the Silver Key, which is the worst story I have ever read. It was not really something Lovecraft wanted to write, but he was helping a friend do it. I so wish that I could unread that awful story which really shat all over the marvelous The Silver Key.

I'm reading Voices of The Void and I'm liking it. The beginning is just incredible considering some of the visions that appear, and there's a Half-Life vibe to the location. Solaris, Perfect Dark and Halo sort of came to mind as well. I've been out of games for a long time, my last major infatuation was with Shenmue II.

I really enjoyed how it began with children's drawings; a very colourful method of illustrating the scene without giving too much away. I wasn't sure if the protagonist was being haunted by an art therapist or what was going on initially.

My only real criticism of the story relates to the "chanting" aspect. Always found that very very hard to square with any sense of foundation on science/reality. I feel Lovecraft should've (and prob certainly was capable of) making a case for this regarding unique and peculiar generation of waves/vibrations/not sure what all else off the top of my head. But, simply reading weird words from a book is rather facile to me...Nonetheless, it is a favorite story, right next to THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and CHARLES DEXTER WARD. (I have always found the last third of THE SHUNNED HOUSE very powerful and evocative.)

@@milesdoyle7683 I think I just used the term elder entity because he did. Maybe not. I cant remember. But I pretty much reject the orderly mythos that later authors instituted. I could be wrong but I dont think lovecraft categorized them that way.

Several of histories feature race mixing in a negative light including call of Cthulhu. I think that's somehow part of the sensibilities of the time. Progressive thought was very politically influential.
