In this test I used the Mac mini with the following specs:
Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU
16-core Neural Engine
8GB unified memory
256GB SSD storage
Also, I used the free version of Resolve 17 that is compatible with M1

@@darkcggaming that’s irrelevant because ARM arrived on desktop machines decades ago and Apple were working on ARM back in ‘92 with the Newton. Also the Apple M1 is not an ARM CPU , it’s an ARM based SoC which means it combines multiple elements together to share bandwidth and memory and reduce latency. This results in gains far above what you’d get with just a CPU upgrade alone.

In Preferences/User/Playback Settings, Performance mode is set to Automatic by default. What this means is that if you have a 8K clip on a HD timeline, Resolve is free to use quarter-res decode. If you want to always decode in full-quality, make sure your timeline resolution is same or higher than clip resolution, or switch off Performance mode completely which is a much heavier hammer.

I'm so pleased there is finally someone who is actually testing apples claims about the 8k... However what I'd find very interesting is trying to do all of the effects etc to a timeline with 45minutes worth of 4k footage from the red camera or Sony a7S3 using its 600mbps codec to replicate the length of a documantary... Or at least a timeline of at least 10-15minutes of 8k footage.. as indeed it's impressive it can play it but it's a six second Clip!. Realistically people need it to be able to cope and playback smoothly with up to an hour of 4k footage.. in most KZfaqrs cases 10-20minutes of 4k say from the A7S3 at 600mbps or the crazy R5 files at 4k 1400mbps!.. I have a strong feeling these M1 laptops will pretty much collapse with a long taxing timeline of say 4k 10bit 4.2.2. like said above from the R5 1400mbps wilt effects, full colour grading.. the problem with apple is they over promise and a lot of the time under deliver... With them really pushing how easily they can edit 8k footage... The average person will think oh cool I can edit, add effects, special effects, colour grading to my 1hour long documantary in davinci resolve without any problems smooth like butter if they can do it 8k without dropping a frame!!!.. this is where apple shot itself in both feet!.

What were the timeline settings though? Were these all run on a 1080p timeline, a 4k, 6k or 8k timeline? That's the true testament if playback is 100%. Resolve does an amazing job playing native RAW clips back on a 1080p timeline with no problem, but change it to a 4k or 8k and that's when the resolution starts to impact playback.

It's the timeline resolution. Pretty sure he is using an HD timeline - 1080 therefore its not running at full resolution. If you set your timeline to 1080 you will have much better performance. Running an 8k file at native resolution is completely different from running an 8k file and scaling to 1080.

@@mattarimusic2545 Shouldnt be. My ipad pro can scrub 6 lines of 8k mp4 video just as well as his mac is doing here. Full resolution. No need to downsample or reduce the timeline to a smaller size. Plus what would be the point of showing that anyways? Also here he is working with raw. So his computer would have to be reading the raw, creating a 1080p proxy, and scrubbing it in real time. Impossible. Davinci doesn't even work that way. An 8k clip on a 1080p timeline still plays as a 8k clip. You have to go and choose to render optimized media to get a smaller proxy for scrubbing and that would be pointless.

@@TechJungle The following is me musing: the Pugetsystems article entitled "DaVinci Resolve Studio - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, 3080 & 3090 Performance" says that, "the Fusion portion ... is almost entirely CPU limited". In that regard, the benchmarks for M1 show it beating the single core scores for the 3950X and 3900X. It's been said that for Fusion it is the single core scores that matter, not the multicore. On the other hand, it is also said that Fusion in x86 needs a lot of RAM, 32GB minimum, preferably 64GB or more. So overall I don't know how all of that relates to the M1's suitability for Fusion, having only at most 16GB of RAM but a significantly faster single core speed than your 3950X.

@@TechJungle I have a 16gb m1 and edit 5k red footage. I also use fusion for replacing images in a recorded iPhone. So basically I need to use the tracker. It plays decent however there is a tiny lag. When I switch it to half resolution it plays a lot more smoothly. Then when I put it in a 1080p timeline it plays a whole lot better with almost no noticeable lag. So to me, this is sufficient for what I edit. Which is only 30 second spots.

My MacBook Pro with the M1 chip/ same spec as yours doesn't seem to be able to play a 5k Red clip seamlessly like you showed. Is there anything I could be missing? I have no programmes running in the background either. Thanks, Nick

Isn’t RAW actually easier to edit and playback than compressed files though. I do most of my work with Gemini and Helium’s at around 8:1 compression and I notice that they play back better than a lot of the more compressed codecs such as h.265 or prores 420

does it have a thunderbolt connector for external gpu ? also could u put windows 10 on a ssd drive and boot so you have full windows 10 to use for gaming and VR as mac still does not surport VR and mac does not surport all graphics cards so pc will be needed for more editing with 3d modeling stuff and gaming thanks

timeline playback option is always at HD. you should have to change playback at each resolution and test it.

What’s the MacMini like for noise reduction? If it can do noise reduction with good playback I’ll sell my desktop pc and swap to that. I imagine it’s really power efficient as well?

what happens when you do denoising? any "GPU memory full" errors? it's still impressive given my 6gb rtx 2060 can't even playback eos r5 files smoothly!

Hi I'm interested in buying the mac mini m1, but my question is: I have a camera blackmagic pocket 4k and I shoot in braw and prores, does the mac mini not lose quality in rendering the final product? I've heard that the rendering time is good, but the quality is not so good. What is your opinion of the rendering? And to chose 8gb ram or 16gbram? And storage 260gb or 512gb? Thanks and continue with your great videos!

So regarding what you have shown, if I want to edite 4k to 6k RAW with many effects and transitions on timeline and with a 4k monitor connected do you think that it is going to go smooth?
