Like most things, its use cases range from optimal to wildly suboptimal. In the case of that fight, there wasn't a good time for Fjord to use it, partly because Travis didn't know how it worked, partly because the CR cast is always looking for a way to play suboptimally for storytelling purposes. Literally, they pitch Matt on excuses not to do the optimal thing because they think that's more fun. It's a very different vibe than most tables.

I think the Marine Layer effect would mean that you can't see through it--so if you're in the center, you can only see things around you. I usually rule / always thought you can't see someone on the other side of a fog cloud as well as in it, based on line of sight. Keep in mind as well, when fighting in fog, you are both an unseen attacker, and you cannot see your target, so you have both advantage and disadvantage on attack rolls, which cancel out. (And cancel out any other sources of advantage/disadvantage too.)
@KazumiKiguma
@KazumiKiguma 3 жыл бұрын
Fog's a really weird thing for them to just simply say "it's heavy obscurity", because that basically lumps it with darkness, but seeing outside of an area of darkness is much easier than seeing outside of an area of fog. That said, I'm pretty sure Davvy's misinterpreting how "heavily obscured" even works. The wording makes it sound more like "hey, this thing is hard to see because it's in darkness/fog/etc." rather than "hey, you're in darkness/fog/etc. so you can't see anything." It's an important distinction because of light, even if you're in darkness, you can see the area a torch lights up just fine, why would it be harder to hit there rather than hit in the area you can't see at all? Tiny enemies hiding in bushes are hard to hit because they're obscured by the bush, it's not that they have a hard time shooting you while you're out in the open.
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot 3 жыл бұрын
@@KazumiKiguma RAW fog is heavily obscured. "A heavily obscured area-such as darkness, opaque fog, or dense foliage-blocks vision entirely. A creature effectively suffers from the blinded condition when trying to see something in that area." (page 183). The effect here is also based on the spell fog cloud. Keep in mind as well, when fighting in fog, you are both an unseen attacker, and you cannot see your target, so you have both advantage and disadvantage on attack rolls, which cancel out. (And cancel out any other sources of advantage/disadvantage too.)

@@DavvyChappy It was very recently (like, last 2 episodes). He specifically said something to the effect that "Dispel Magic can dispel any magical effect, if the caster knows what they're targeting", which seems incorrect, as the spell specifically targets spells cast. Perhaps he's thinking of older editions? He has previously mistaken Cure Wounds for a Necromancy spell before. Either way, I think Marine Layer would work better if it was worded to say that it casts Fog Cloud, but with the Channel Divinit specific changes, therefore something like Dispel Magic would work.

@@LupineShadowOmega Its a non concentration (not disable unless you actively rule against the text but fair enough) darkness devil sight that you get at the same speed that a warlock would (a 3rd level warlock needs to spend nearly all their resources and invocations to make it work), despite being a half caster. Darkness devil sight is insanely good already. Nonconcentration alone is insane. Getting it just as fast despite being a half caster is insane. Not having to worry as much about screwing your teammates over is big too. Also you can use it once a short rest instead of twice in the warlocks case but for warlocks its using their ONLY RESOURCE so I'd almost argue it's cheaper for the paladin since they still keep all their other resources while the warlock has to use HALF OF ALL THEIR RESOURCES to cast it once.
@LupineShadowOmega
@LupineShadowOmega 3 жыл бұрын
@@j.a.6310 spend all their resources? Its a single slot that you'll be getting back on a short rest and concentration is negligible as you aren't likely to be taking damage in the first place with the disadvantage, let alone being a Warlock that outside of bladelock isn't going to stand in melee range. The invocation is a point, but even then it was already useful, heck it doesn't even need to be your own darkness. Which the Paladin has noting for. I get that it is powerful, but disagree, I'd choose the warlock every time.

I mean, additionally, while some homebrew is bonkers, it’s also worth noting that 5e is about as balanced as a pie on a pinwheel. So if you balance a melee class to try to match a caster’s output, everyone will think it’s insane. If you make a new half caster with rangers in mind, everyone will think it’s a bit of a wimp. So judging homebrew balance is hard, as there’s no reasonable standard to hold it to.

Without too many spoilers, Fjord did use the fog in a recent encounter and it was honestly a lot more trouble for the party then seemed worth initially. Matt did a good job of implementing all the visibility rules and it took a LOT of bumbling around/opportunity attacks for the allies to get back towards the eye of the storm (as they couldn't see when they retreated into the fog) and enemies in the fog had cover from the majority of the party who were outside the aura. I think this is a feature that is relatively? balanced so long as the DM knows how to use the hindering elements as well as the buffing ones fairly.
@polygon2745
@polygon2745 3 жыл бұрын
But I think that’s largely because the cast themselves don’t understand how obscured/blinded mechanics work. If they ever do decide to learn the mechanics and start using strategies like the one Davvy mentioned in the video, it would be a lot stronger than what we saw
@justmonica9253
@justmonica9253 3 жыл бұрын
Opportunity attacks require you to see the target, so if everyone was blind in the fog there shouldn't be any. Unless they made the mistake of running by enemies in the eye of the storm, which, rules as written, they should know are there because not being able to see enemies does not on its own make you lose track of them. They must take the hide action while obscured to gain that benefit, which I doubt these enemies did. Additionally, while spells become terrible when fired into the fog, since many spells require you to see the target, heavy obscurement has no effect on ranged attacks if both the attack and defender have it. If the enemy is not in the eye of the storm, you have advantage for attacking a blinded target, and disadvantage for being blinded yourself, which cancel out.
@benweinberg3819
@benweinberg3819 3 жыл бұрын
@@justmonica9253 those are fair points. Again, not trying to spoil anything beyond "there was a fight" but it was a lot of running back and forth by both sides in the fog, IIRC Matt was requiring search checks to listen/feel for enemies in the fog before being able to attack them, then with disadvantage. It was very much a case of the fog user putting it up with no allies around, then the foe and central point at the eye for the majority while the other party members couldn't shoot in and had to run in, in random directions and fumbled around for a bit swinging wildly at whatever moved. Same thing for the heavy obscurement penalties you mention, there are other sense besides vision for detecting and targeting enemies (DM permitting ofc) but you're right that the disadvantage and advantage would still cancel out in most of those situations. Ultimately the ability is very powerful for a paladin and ranged party who all clump together, but its not quite as hard as Davvy makes out to have terrain make this impractical, and even before fireball common spells like Moonbeam, Aganazzar's, Flaming Sphere, hell even Ice Knife doesn't specify needing LoS. If you can feasibly triangulate the center of the fog, a savvy caster can threaten party members clinging to the dim central area

I just got out of a campaign where the DM allowed a player to have a flight speed of 120, a player to have advantage on any saving throw of his choice, and a player with enough narrative control to change every PC's backstory just so we're all a part of his. Moderate your PC's homebrew, guys. They get in each other's way so often that even THEY aren't having fun.

Oath of the Open Sea Is essentially the Swashbuckling Freedom Paladin idea I have loved sense the Divine Liberater from 3.5, with a fun aquatic twist, and sense I love water, that's awesome! That being said anything is better than Another Anti-Paladin... Yes I know we only have two, but for a while there I thought that was all we where going to get.

@KazumiKiguma
@KazumiKiguma 3 жыл бұрын
@@Spicybees_ That's because Matt's running Heavy Obscurity correctly. You're not blind by being in the area, you're blind for trying to shoot or look at something that's in the area. If you're using a torch in a pitch black cave, you can't shoot goblins you can't see, but they can sure shoot you because you're showing them where the hell you are. If you actually blinded from being in darkness, how would anyone see a light pointing out the exit of a cave? Fog just falls under the general Heavily Obscured rules, same as darkness, but doesn't get affected by darkvision. To quote Heavily Obscured: "A creature effectively suffers from the blinded condition *when trying to see something in that area* ."

it's nice to see you giving a fairer look to unofficial material and theorycraft. I know homebrew is a very divisive thing amongst players and dm's and there's really no way way of truly knowing if a homebrew is designed well enough to be considered worthy of standardized publication. that being said, homebrew is one of those aspects of d&d that is very similar to cooking food. you can always follow a recipe and the recipe will always work so long as the instructions are properly followed but there's a certain personal pride and satisfaction that comes about as a result of your own creativity that other people actually enjoy it's fun to look at a recipe for something and think to yourself "i like what this makes. i wonder if i can do something with it that might make it better." sure the first few goes at it will probably fail horrifically and you might destroy your kitchen a bit in the process but that one concoction that comes out that gets you and your friends tasting it to say "wow. this is actually really good." gives you such a great feeling. i'm a bit biased in this discussion as i've made several homebrews myself ( with the cooking analogy i also have a tendency to experiment with foods and dishes) both as a player and a dm for people in my groups to use and i always feel such an intense surge of pride in myself when my friends take to something i made so enthusiastically like, "man, they actually seem to really like this. hell yeah man, i made that." also as a frame of reference as a dm i tend to homebrew monsters (albeit sparingly) to function as i think they might in a "witcher" type of setting. amping their health/ defenses and emphasizing weaknesses to things like fire, silver, etc. so that knowingly exploiting a creature's weaknesses yields immediately noticeable results to my players what i homebrew the most however, are classes and subclasses most of what i've done have been to martially focused classes with things like changes to the base ranger class, adjustments to the samurai and banneret and a new subclass for the paladin that one of the dm's in a game i play for actually took and seems to be using atm. edit: as for opinions i have for mercer's wacky creations. cobalt soul (especially it's variant) is easily the best one he's made in my eyes. open seas oath is really cool but yeah that fog is about as scary as a lit torch in a fireworks warehouse.

Seriously, I don't know why people are up in arms over "Fog Cloud is one of your channel divinities." Hell, the other Channel Divinity is Repelling Blast! Why are people so worried about Fog Cloud when the other option adds 10 feet of knock back to every weapon attack for a minute? Paladins get proficiency in Longbows. Nothing's stopping them from taking Sharpshooter. With a Longbow and Sharpshooter, Open Seas paladins can clear the deck of any enemy ship within 600 feet.

Imo the best way to deal with the mist, is to at 3rd level treat like darkness and as the paladin levels up change who else can have see, at 7th maybe 1-2 people and build up to the 5ft it is now or maybe equal to charisma modifer. That way it’s more like darkness for warlock in which they get rid off at 7th level for shadows of Moil, maybe the mist should be situational until 7th level too

I had found the same thing. There is a few ways to increase Marine Layers power, be a Goblin with skulker or a wood elf with dip in rogue.. And you will be able to hide in the lightly obscured area of the fog even if enemies come within 5ft of you.

Mind of Mercury doesn't let you turn your reaction into a second action, it allows you to make more than one reaction in a round, at the cost of 1 ki point per additional reaction. You are limited to 1 reaction per turn, however. It's not exceptionally powerful, and definitely can get expensive fast, but has it's uses when it's combined with something like sentinel, or if you have multiple "analyzed" enemies attacking you a missing.

I personally LOVE homebrew so to each their own. After all the official stuff has many major issues dude. Despite the 'playtesting' have you seen Beastmaster Ranger!?! The fact that DEX bonus stays to AC even if you are restrained and unaware of an attacker? How useless Truestrike Cantrip is on every level , How OP some cantrips are how utterly useless others are. How Powerful and essential some Feats are yet feats are 'optional'. How useless other feats are in comparison. Need I go on? Anyways I think in the end marine layer is fine because it can be useless, detrimental or OP depending on 1) player tactical skills 2) communication between PCs 3) situation. Also Catch up on Critical Role! Its so enjoyable despite the not perfect tactics that often are frustrating or rules errors. Still a Great show! Fun video thanks.

inquisitor rogue 3/ cobalt monk 7/ samurai (with gunner feat)/ renegade fighter is an idea in the process and I love it. played a lore bard/ open sea paladin for a one-shot on Halloween, Dm agreed to it if I changed the channel divinity to lightly obscured still had fun. I can see the class getting updated in the future similar to the blood hunter I would maybe have something more mythical to 20th level ability to really sell the mythical idea maybe some lightning/thunder or even ice powers like your weapon crackles like a brewing storm as ice clings to your armour (like a mini armour of agathys)?

In defence of the paladin channel divinity, shadow sorcerer functionally has a similar ability with their darkness feature. However unlike darkness it does not give advantage/disadvantage to melee attacks, something most paladins crave. I believe this is more of a ranged attack deterrent and/or control spell. Yes it does, however, give ranged allies cover from ranged attacks, but is negated by aoe and melee fighters closing the gap.

Here's the thing about the mist ability, since all creatures within 5 feet of the paladin can see through the fog an enemy can't be getting ponded by the paladin themselves and still be blinded. It's still very strong for mostly ranged parties as they could all just huddle around the paladin and fire off a bunch of arrows or spells with advantage.
