I want to get into building my own things from time to time, however I used to be very bad in geometry and math, so I am curious how straight that workbench will be. Already messed up the calculations on how much wood is needed for the poles, I was missing 7.5m of wood! To read my 'math' from days ago also took way more time than expected...
Some skate obstacles are also on the list for building.

That's the beauty of Japanese tools, you can use them without a workbench ! Nice mastery of the pull-saw. Love the kitty helper too - we have 3 of them to supervise.

@@normanbott oh nice, it was recommended by a friend, I really like that saw. Can you recommend any other Japanese tools that every rookie should have? Wow, you must build amazing things with 3 supervisor kitties!

@@livia_skates Thanks, we manage to get stuff done ! I only use Japanese handsaws now, don't have conventional push ones for years. Since I've already got a selection of cast-iron body planes I've never ventured into Japanese ones. Same with chisels. If I were starting out again or could afford to re-tool I'd look at Japanese wood-bodied planes as well as chisels. Unfortunately I can't actually recommend any to start with. To see these used by a master craftsman look at Ishitani Furniture channel. I do like the Japanese marking out tools, the squares look neat and efficient so maybe look at these if you don't have any yet. Good luck.

Pull saws are great. One way to avoid the splintering of the wood is to draw your line all the way around (use a good square) and rotate the piece to score each face (1/4" deep will do) before cutting all the way through. Have fun with the build!

Thanks, that's actually smart. I was fairly lucky with the splintering so far. Sawing is actually pretty fun. Thanks for the tip!

Nice work. Its cool to see that you can make your own 3D plans. A bit of advice though, especially since you cut stuff by hand 1) dont rely on measurements - you dont need things to be exactly X long, they just have to be the same length, each time you measure something, there will deviations, so try you using the first piece you cut as your marking tool for the next ones. 2) Tools. Love your minimalistic approach, I wish I could have kept it that way years ago, but with that being said there is a small difference between a knockoff japanese saw and the real thing, but monumental difference in performance and longevity, if you can, try one out. Second, if you plan on building stuff more often, look for a battery powered drill, its the one tool that is bar none better with batteriers than its corded counterpart.

Thank you for your kind comment and for taking the time to write me your advice, I appreciate it a lot! I will definitely try to implement the first point. Regarding tools, I had to buy a circular hand saw. I think with what I have now, I can do many of my projects which I have in mind ☺️

@@livia_skates You certainly can, I heard someone say "every woodworking tool is basically a chisel put into a different jig" and they were right. You will be able to make tons of stuff with just a drill and a circular saw.

Invest in a comfortable pair of safety toe (composite toe, not steel toe) work boots. I like Timberland. Work boots do more than just protect your feet from injury. They become a second set of hands. They can push, pull, or motivate something to move. You can stand on a board and use a "foot clamp" while you saw something. Most importantly, they are comfortable to wear, so you will actually wear them. My work boots are the most comfortable footwear I own, and I wear them all the time. Protecting your feet is crucial you your health and well being. Cuts and puncture wounds to the feet heal very slowly and can very easily get infected. The small bones on the top of your feet are easily broken if an object falls on them. Toes break just by stubbing your toe. Work boots also help prevent sprained or broken ankles too. Foot injuries are life changing, and not for the better. Protect your feet. Keep up the good work, and thank you for taking the time to film and produce this video. Sharing your work on KZfaq inspires others. Keep inspiring, you are doing great!

I totally agree. Also, I notice that in your skateboarding videos you wear shoes. Accidents to your feet can happen in woodworking, too. A painful cut on your foot would interfere with that, maybe even more than woodworking.

Uhhh wise observation. I would be bummed if I can't skate because of a woodworking injury. I think that was the convincing comment I needed :D

16:04 when you cut like the this, the wood bend and catch the Saw. Not effective. Try to support the workpeace underneath directly near the cutting line. Cheers

Getting maths wrong is done by all sometime or another. Also using an ash pan & brush to clean part way through is a newbie sign. 🙂 Nice video of cat directing things

Thank you, yeah there's a lot to learn in a building process, but I am really into it 😄 haha i didn't not know about the ash pan & brush, so how's a pro doing it? Only cleaning at the end? Somehow when i clean part way through it gives me a moment to think what to do next and start fresh from an empty canvas 😄 I appreciate any sort of tips!

@@livia_skates I'm not a pro, but I've been at it for a few years. I find that a little sawdust on a concrete floor reduces how far a screw, nut, bolt, or small tool will bounce. Makes it easier to find. At the end of a session or when it starts to interfere with more than your sense of clean.
