I've been thinking about picking up cello and watching you realize the bow is a lesson in itself was surprising. I didn't realize I would have to figure out how to use the bow lol

Hello, I'm a young cellist, and I've been playing cello for around 9 years now and here a couple tips that I can give you. In my opinion the most fundamental part of cello is the posture. Ideally, you would have the C peg right behind your ear. I would raise the end pin up by a bit so the cello can go farther up. Otherwise, for the body posture, it is mostly correct. For the right arm posture, the bow hold needs a lot of work. make sure to relax your right shoulder and dont hold any tension. For the actual bowhold, it is hard to explain it over text. I'd just search up cellobello bow hold and there are probably some great videos out there that can help you. Good luck on your cello journey.

Thanks Isaac! This is really helpful! I was wondering yesterday if I had the end pin out enough because my bow was hitting my thigh a little when I tried to play the A string! Getting the C peg just above my ear is a helpful reference point. And yes, for the bow hold I will do that. I am struggling with that without it killing my thumb, so I'm sure it's not right yet! Thank you for the tips and the kind wishes! All the best!

@@Winding_Lines I'm glad I was helpful. For the bowhold, the thumb will hurt if you aren't used to it. There are these things called stringvision on Amazon that will protect your thumb. You don't need one but it might make it a bit more comfortable. You can also go to a Luthier and ask them to put a plastic tube over the bow. They will do it for free sometimes. You don't need it but it could help.
@whathandleisnttaken
@whathandleisnttaken Жыл бұрын
Forgot to add that relaxing the thumb will help it not hurt and it allows for a more flexible bow hold.

@@whathandleisnttaken Yeah, I think this will make a difference! I'm definitely gripping it too hard at the moment. A friend of mine who plays the violin was helping me a little with it yesterday, just like the principles of holding it and not gripping it too hard, and I'll watch some videos to start with and see if that stops it from hurting!

hey im a cello player, im so happy you picked up cello! Iv got a couple tips too! one is i noticed you pick up the cello to adjust the height I would spend some time looking up a rock stop. its a little circle or square that helps keep the cello in place on slippery floors. And one one thing else and everything else was amazing, is try to loosen the bow hairs just a smidge oh it just caught my eye is I know for aucustic cello which I have its not recommended to hang in on the wall but I dont know for electric. I hope you keep it up!
@Winding_Lines
@Winding_Lines Жыл бұрын
Ah, thanks Madie! Something like that stop sounds like it would be very useful - I do notice it slipping on my floor! I tried to put it in my slipper yesterday, but then I had to stand on the other end of my slipper to stop that slipping too! 😂😂 Thanks for the other advice too! I'll try to research about electric cellos and wall-hanging! Thanks!!

I’m teaching myself the violin as an adult. I’m the same way-always hyper-fixating on a new hobby. But I’ve wanted to learn the violin since I was 6. I never got the chance to learn as a kid. My mom always assumed that it would be too expensive (it is, but there are ways to reduce the costs). And my mom tried to push me into more “social activities” that I hated…

We sound like we have lots in common! How long have you been learning the violin? How's it going? 😊 Also, what are some of the other hobbies you've been into? I love to hear about people's hobbies and interests!

@@Winding_Lines I've played guitar for ten years, and I've experimented with related instruments like ukulele and mandolin. I'm trying to teach myself piano and violin at the same time, actually. I also have interests in visual art (painting, ceramics), learning languages, and writing poetry. I also know a lot of random medical knowledge even though I'm not a medical student or anything.

@@d.n.8919 Oh wow! That all sounds very cool! I also play guitar, and love fluid acrylic painting and digital drawing. I’m trying to learn more illustration and analogue drawing skills this year too, though it keeps getting pushed back on my list of things I want to do. 😏

Heya! Violinist here, but my best friend plays cello, so I know somewhat about this. Like madie suggested, I would highly recommend a rock stop, and maybe check your rosin? It looks like dark rosin (dark oak colored), but since I'm not sure if the rosin came with the cello, I can't tell completely. If it's a lighter colored rosin, that's for more violins and maybe violas, and will make your tone a bit strange.
@Winding_Lines
@Winding_Lines Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, the rosin came with the cello. It’s almost black in colour! Thanks for your comment! And hope the violining goes well!!! 😁

I'm so happy for you that you got a cello! I hope you have such a good time learning the cello! I play the hammered dulcimer, but about a year and a half ago, I got really into the idea of learning the lever harp. I got one, but I haven't really gotten far with it. I'm thinking I might get a teacher this year and get serious about it. Good luck!

Thank you so much! I have to admit my ignorance and say I had to Google what a hammered dulcimer is. It looks very cool and a harp is the other instrument I've always thought was amazing! Yeah, getting a teacher for a bit could push you a bit further with it! Hope it goes well and you have fun with it! I've been having a great time with my cello!!

Most people don't know what a hammered dulcimer is when I say I play it. Haha. It's definitely an unusual instrument! I was self-taught for years before I got a teacher for my dulcimer. I went far on my own, but I've definitely seen faster progress now that I have someone to work with. Enjoy your cello! It looks like you're off to a good start!

I got very annoyed at the beginning because the sound was really weak and I thought that she was pressing too lightly because I know for a lot of other string instruments you don’t have to press at all but I play the bass
@Winding_Lines
@Winding_Lines Жыл бұрын
😆 Yeah, it was really weak because I hadn’t put any rosin on the bow! 😅 Thankfully once I worked that out I actually managed to make a sound!! Ahhh, bass is cool! My husband plays the bass! Thanks for commenting!

hello, I have been learning cello since 2012 and to me, your cello is out of tune: the bridge seems askew and your bow seems too tight. For a first year of cello, a luthier could have directed you towards a rental for a year before buying. You will have to go there anyway to adjust the pegs, the endpin, the tailpiece and the bridge. Learning on an electric cello seems complicated to me because the sound projection is not at all the same. A traditional cello is better for correcting intonation and bowing technique. Anyway, good luck to you. PS : to hold the cello in the right position, buy a wedge for your endpin
@Winding_Lines
@Winding_Lines Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I couldn't find any good rental options near me, but yeah, I'll get someone to check on the tuning for me, thanks! I'm having lots of fun with it! 😊 A wedge seems like a good idea!
